View Full Version : Sony Melbourne wants to know more

Heres the story,
Walked into Sony Melbourne (in the CBD) asking about a car charger for my NX70V. Spoke to a salesman who showed me one. Took it out of the box to give me a closer look at it. I took out my NX70V to see how the unit attaches to my nx and the salesman saw a cf in the slot.
He asked me how i found using the WiFi card in the CBD. I smiled and replied that it wasnt a WiFi card but a CF memory card. We then got into a......lets say discussion about this piece of harware that wasnt supposed to work.
All i wanted to do is look at the car adaptor but he was more interested in the CF card. He was very, very, very interested. So i briefly showed him. I say briefly because i was in no mood to show him. I mean who is the customer and who was the salesman. All i wanted to do is look at their products.
Anyway, he got to see the name of the developer (eruware). As i left the store ($100.00 for a car adaptor...no thanks) and walking down Swanston St, something hit me.
Dont you think Sony would know about this driver? Dont you think that they would have tried to get a copy?
Probably Sony U.S have but what about Sony A.U? Got me thinking. i wonder if anyone else has had any experiences with Sony and the new driver?

Well along the same lines (somewhat), I stopped in to J and R electronics today (they are a huge electronics store here in NYC and they also have a great site) and spoke to a couple of the salesmen about any upcoming models. Needless to say they knew nothing. What does this have to do with this thread you may ask?! Well, turns out NONE of these guys knew about the Cf driver either and they work off of commision!! I told them all about it and how it works and gave them the info about eruware and the price and basically told them about everything I had read here. They were amazed! They said the Sony rep was just in last week or so and didn't mention a thing, and also how unhappy Sony would probably be about this! HA!
That should put some money in eruware's pocket as well as their own since they can sell more CF cards now also. I'm sure they will be telling their own customers about eruware now, which I am happy about those people put alot of effort into that project and seem to be very helpful and nice (unBIGbusinesslike...is that even a word?)My pockets are empty though, I got nothin' out of this deal. :( ;)

I have to drop by a few of my local stores and tell the people about this stuff. Its just that I'm not ready to spend any more money at the moment... considering that's what I do EVERY time I step into a computer store.

I am still following this story and am not surprised to find out that Sony (the lion) has no idea about Eruware (the mouse). It is doubtful that they will be bothered considering that sales of their items have been boosted because of it. It seems that the mouse has plucked the thorn from Sony's paw and bandaged the wound as well (the thorn being the slot in the nx/nv series and the bandage being the following sales of their products. However, ignorant sales people will continue to shoot themselves in the foot (but that is another story).

Heck I find that the ignorant sales people were telling customers that the CF slot accepted CF memory cards several months ago, way before we even had a beta of the CF driver.

Oh, Thank you very much for telling those guys they can charge more for CF storage cards! THANKS!
..oh, well, I don't mind, I'm in Japan anyway. ;-)

aussie, that shop on swanston is not a sony shop, its a sony distributor because it sells Bose, JVC and other brands as well. I feel the people dont know much because i had to point out to the sales person that the clie launcher is not the "new OS5 look" and had to show him how to switch from classic view to clie launcer. Some of the people there are students working part time. Email me, maybe we can exchange info on the clie :).

Actually now that i think about it your right. the actual store is called Denman Audio (or something like that).....
I thought they were Sony Melbourne because of that stupid large Sony sign on the cnr of Swanston & Lonsdale Sts.
I'd love to exchange info on the NX. I've only had mine for around 6 months now and im always looking at stuff related to the NX

You might have helped some guys make more money to support their family, and you might have helped driver~ignorant NX purchasers be even more happy with their NX.
I just find it hard to imagine people that purchase and/or sell these things without doing some research, and/or following the latest trends, etc.

Easy, people. I'm good friend with two people working in Promarkt and Saturn, which are German shops.
a)They sell hundreds of devices, you wouldn't be able to remember anything besides what the company who makes that thing told you either
b) They switch around people all the time. So it often happens that a guy who knows a lot about phones and cameras is standing right next to the PS2 games, with absolutely no clue what it's all about.
c) They usually don't pay enough to let the guy get an NX-or-equal device every 3 months

Seems some of the more Clie-centric people here forget there is more for shop/store workers to deal with than the Clie and are quick to judge.

Why bother hiring a person, if not to inform your customer about the products you are selling. Can you imagine going to a Honda showroom and the sales person has no idea what is cruise control.

20 cars versus 1000+ electronic devices - bad comparison.

As soon as I hit the sales floor at Circuit City I am always going to let people know about the CF drivers for the NX and NZ units. I'll also see if I can load the drivers on the display units so I could use a CF card from the digital camera department and show them what the deal is! :D
It is the truth, though, that most of the people working in these shops cannot keep track of everything. We know so much because we own the devices, and we go out looking for information every day. I'll admit, I am not going to know about every little hack and program for the PPC devices, mp3 players, or digital cameras. No practical amount of research can replace the knowledge gained by actually owning a device.
They SHOULD know the basics though. Such as the fact that the CF slot does not work with memory straight out of the box. Anyone telling customers that, especially before the driver, is making a big mistake in customer satisfaction.

hansschmucker,
This store aussie_nx70v and i are disccusing is no bigger than a 7-11, not a electronic superstore. The shop has no more than 200 products and 4-5 palms... all clies the sj33 nx70 nr70 nz90 and the tg50. The main palm in this store is the Clie so it can be considered speciallized. Thats why i compaired it to honda where there are only a limited amount of models, not like the used car yards in Germany which you are clearly refering to.

Where am I refering to car yards??? Are 20 cars a car yard? I'm not making fun of you. I really have problems getting your point.

I have no problem with store employees not knowing the details of all their products. That's fine. What does bother me is when they act like they know everything about a product and speak as an expert to sell more products based on false information. I hear this all the time at Best Buy and other stores. One time, it was so funny, a girl at a store tried to convince me that I could use CF cards in my Palm m505! I bought the device the day it came out, and she tried to sell me "additional memory" She told me the cf cards would fit in the device (where?) and all past palm units used cf memory, too! There was no way I could convince her otherwise! She wouldn't even look at the unit so I could explain it to her. Oh, well..Its pretty funny, though.

Well in Audi a German car showroom there are limited models, like the A3 A4 A6 A8 AND THE TT. When you compare 20 models of cars to 1000 models of electronics thats ridiculous. The store we are refering to has only 5 models of clies. And the sales person in that store can tell me MS pro and MS duo are the same thing, just a different name for different countries. What kind of info is that????

I am from the US, but glad to see some Aussies here! :)
I have friends in Sydney. I was in Australia a few years ago and think it is a beautiful country. I am sorry that you are offended, because even though I am an American, I do not believe the US is "the centre of the world."
Maybe some people on this website forget because icliesource a .com website, not .au, or they just don't notice. I'm not sure. I probably don't notice peoples location sometimes, either. Well, anyway, I'm sorry that you are offended.

So then, you mentioning the price in the first place was off topic, too. I don't understand that if you mention the price in the first place, how somebody could comment on your statement in a conversation-like forum, that could be off topic.
Its not like you said, $100 AUD, and the other person said, Did you watch television last night? Come on, if you mentioned the price in the first place, its then part of the discussion. If it wasn't, then you shouldn't have mentioned it. Were you upset that somebody commented on something in your story that wasn't about the cf driver? I'm sorry, my reply is now "off-topic", and I guess I shouldn't comment anymore.

jedix,
first things first......
i mentioned the car adaptor cuz i wanted to bring some continuity in my story which was in my original thread. the reason why i went into denman was for the car adaptor. however, in saying that the reason for the post was for the cf driver. hence this thread being in the compact flash section and not the general nx section.
i also quote "Probably Sony U.S have but what about Sony A.U? Got me thinking. i wonder if anyone else has had any experiences with Sony and the new driver?"
this was the final statement/question i made in that original thread, which should be the reason for all subsequent posts in this thread.
in saying all this i have never said that the car adaptor is not off topic, but slightly off topic. yes, i made a reference to it however the bulk of my original thread was for the cf adaptor.
sydney a nice place?
sure, but melbourne is the most livable place on the face of this earth.... :)

I have heard that Melbourne is beautiful, but I have never been there. I didn't think until after I posted about Sydney that I shouldn't have mentioned that, because I know how people from Melbourne think (that Melbourne is more beautiful). I'm sure its a fine place, I just said I have never been there. I wish I could say that I have. Maybe someday when I visit again! I have to go now. It was nice talking with you! See you around!

Don't beat me up but I toured all over Australia and New Zealand...and I consider myself an 'All Blacks' fan. I liked both but I seemed to like New Zealand better.
As for the discussion on the US being the center of the world...well...
1. The '$' signifies USD, '$X.XX AUD' signifies AUD.
2. We are the center of the world...the USD is taken everywhere...try spending AUD in the US, Mexico, Italy, France, shall I go on? No other currency is exchanged so easily.
3. Things that happen in the US effect the world, not just the country...
I am not trying to sound arrogant, its the truth. Even if I didn't live in the US I would have the same feeling.

OMG are you 2 years old?
I give you my opinion...you rebut by saying I was self-centered. I, in response to your remark, use the term 'Aussy' instead of 'Aussie' because I know it upsets you. Then when I ask you to give me an intelligent response or rebuttal you begin to explain to me that you were correcting my spelling...and start typing like your 2 years old. Common, you want some respect, earn it. Tell me what country you think is the center of the world or don't complain when someone says the United States is.

Two things,
When I go to the store, I go knowing that the salesperson doesn't know anything, if they do, it isn't much as the stores don't pay enough :(.
It behooves one to always do their homework BEFORE going to the store.
Too many make uninformed purchases, the internet is such a great resource when looking to spend money and educating one's self.

The USA is made up of people from all walks of life and from all corners of the world. Sort of a league of nations, a mixed breed. The people can be of any color or any nationality. I agree that a lot of so called Americans do have an air of arrogance about them. The internet just makes the world one big happy family. It also makes us realize that people are people, no matter where they are. No one is perfect and no one is special, because all of us are special :)!

I think Larry's point (feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken) was not that everyone in the world is on the internet but rather that the internet is a global phenomanon. People from (almost) every nation and every walk of life are on it, but of course that does not mean that they all have equal representation on it.
