Since I was in the benchmarking mood : http://www.cliesource.com/forums/editpost.php?s=&action=editpost&postid=185111

I decided to test 2 Sony MS and 2 Lexar MS. All 4 sticks were purple (not translucent nor magic gate) and all were 128mb.

Using the latest ver. of HD Tach (industry standard for HD benchmarks) here are the results:

Categories:

Random Access Time
(milliseconds, lower is better): RAT

Random Burst Speed
(megabytes per second, higher is better): RBS

Maximum Transfer Rate (higher is better):
Maximum Read - MaxRead
Maximum Write - MaxWrite

Minimum Transfer Rate (higher is better):
Minimum Read - MinRead
Minimum Write - MinWrite

Average Transfer Rate (higher is better):
Average Read - AvgRead
Average Write - AvgWrite

CPU Utilization (lower is better): CPU

So....how'd they do?

Lexar stick using MS Import:

RAT: 2.8 ms
RBS: 0.7 mbps
MaxRead: 589.0 kps
MaxWrite: 330.0 kps
MinRead: 558.0 kps
MinWrite: 258.0 kps
AvgRead: 573.9 kps
AvgWrite: 281.4 kps
CPU: 1.3%

Lexar stick using external USB 2.0 Reader/Writer:

RAT: 2.2 ms
RBS: 1.2 mbps
MaxRead: 1229.0 kps
MaxWrite: 786.0 kps
MinRead: 1167.0 kps
MinWrite: 495.0 kps
AvgRead: 1188.6 kps
AvgWrite: 543.1 kps
CPU: 2.2%

Sony Stick using MS Import:

RAT: 2.9 ms
RBS: 0.7 mbps
MaxRead: 587.0 kps
MaxWrite: 373.0 kps
MinRead: 566.0 kps
MinWrite: 276.0 kps
AvgRead: 569.6 kps
AvgWrite: 302.5 kps
CPU: 1.2%

Sony stick using external USB 2.0 Reader/Writer:

RAT: 2.1 ms
RBS: 1.1 mbps
MaxRead: 1151.0 kps
MaxWrite: 967.0 kps
MinRead: 1100.0 kps
MinWrite: 546.0 kps
AvgRead: 1115.4 kps
AvgWrite: 607.0 kps
CPU: 2.2%

Summary:

It is clear that the Sony stick reads slower but writes faster. Again all sticks were faster using the external device. Basically the Sony and Lexar were so close it should come down to price when you decide which one to get since they both are faster in different tasks (reading/writing).

Erik, might we cajole you into putting these into nicely-formatted tables and posting them somewhere on the web? (If not, do you mind terribly if I add a section for your tests to my page at http://www.kittycentral.net/palms.html ?

Unless I am Ben Johnson on steroid, 0.1ms diff don't mean a frag to me! ;)

Thats not the score that really matters...its the Average Read/Write speeds.

Feel free to use the data in any way you want to...do you want me to put this into Excel or something?

You can e-mail me at tifosiv122@hotmail.com or you can reply here.

I didn't check it all over but the Lexar USB is really wrong...

Avg Write 2.2?
CPU 543.1%?

Those need to be switched :D

Thanks,
Erik

Too bad I do not have any USB 2.0 card reader and my PC not support it too.

I wish there was a way for me to check, but I doubt its USB 2.0 that is the reason its so quick. I think its still using 1.1 but since there is no Clie its faster.
