View Full Version : Serial number of Palm device

Does anyone know if there is a way to change the internal serial number of a device, so software reads a different serial number in the Palm device. In my case it's a Garmin iQue 3600.
I'm asking partly out of curiosity and partly because the map supplier to Garmin is apparantly changing the rules for unlocking the maps. The unlock code for the maps is keyed to the serial number of the device and as of June it will allow only one unlock code. This means that anyone who has bought maps and has more than one iQue cannot use the maps on both devices, a ridiculous situation.

A while back I saw an app that could change the rom id/serial number/hotsync id, but I don't know if it was os5 compatible, or if it could work on a Garmin. I think I saw it at freewarepalm.com, but wouldn't that be illegal?

It looks like the map unlock code is keyed to the the Unit ID number displayed in the Applications/Info/Version screen, so it's not really the serial number that needs to be changed but this number, which is probably software derived.

BretnDC: Are you thinking of ChangeName/PalmName? That, and all ROM/id changers for that matter, do not work under OS5. They are hardcoded :( (Check the device's rear end and you'll see it stamped there (at least on T|X and zire 22))

HSNSwitch and MultiUser Hack will change the user ID on OS5 devices.

Unless the map supplier offers multi-device licenses, I have the feeling what you are asking to do is to violate the license agreement. It has been my experience that the vast majority of software licenses for PDAs and similar devices are single user, single device unless specifically offered for enterprise use such as schools.

I suggest going straight to the map supplier with proof of purchase for your maps. I'm sure they'll accomodate your request to update your unlock code.
Any form of tampering with the serial number of hardware is very much like hacking, and is not to be discussed here at 1SRC.

Most Palm software is keyed to your User Name, which means you cannot even transfer or sell software to someone.
In the case of the Garmin maps the situation is worse, because these keyed to a particular PDA unit by serial number. So if your PDA breaks down the maps can become useless. In my case I have two Garmin iQue 3600 and they have a habit of breaking down every few months so I have to transfer my software from one unit to the other. This is no problem for most software because both units have the same User Name. But in the future I can foresee problems using Garmin Maps that I have paid for. I'm afraid I may not be able to use the maps on any of my iQue 3600s. I don't know how you can defend this practice. You have to realize that these are $140 maps.
