View Full Version : Survey... what do you use your MS for?

I just got myself a SL10, and I'm debating getting a memory stick. I don't have any other MS devices. I think I could maybe use it for moving large files, although a USB thumbdrive would be easier and more compatible for that task.
But what else could I do with my MS slot? What do you use yours for?

I keep 3 different Bible translations (for Laridian's MyBible) on my MS, along with lots and lots of Mapopolis maps. I have almost all of NY state loaded, and several parts of PA where I travel quite frequently. I also keep several reference-type documents (QuickOffice) on my MS, though the maps by far take up the biggest chunk of it.
BTW, I have a Soyo Cig@r drive - and you're right... it's far more convenient than trying to move stuff on your Clie/MS.

I have an SL-10 too and have managed to download 33 MB of files (so far) onto a 128 MB stick including:
"Fun Stuff" - Dreams Dictionary, McRecipe, M Drinks, QtrCrazy, Sketcher + 14 other files
"Games" - 48 of 'em! My faves today are Bejeweled, Cribbage, Yahdice, & Hearts.
"Misc. Stuff" like DiddleBug, Handy Shopper, The Tracker, Documents to Go, among others.
"Medical Stuff" including Blood Pressure Mgr., Doctor DB, 1st Aid, and Shots 2003.
"Reference Stuff" like Tide Tool, Noah Lite, BDicty, Palm Reader (with tons of reference files), Town Compass (lots of files including "US Holidays 03" which can add holidays to your DateBook), and more.
"Time/Calendar Stuff" - Big Clock, Interrupt Me, Moon Phase.
"Utilities" - Filez.
On internal RAM I have Avantgo, Power Run, X-Master w/5 different hacks, and Graffiti Anywhere. This leaves me with 3.8MB free internal RAM.
I usually end up downloading at least 3 new files every day! So I'd say a memory stick is definitely worth it, especially with the great prices for 128 MB stick.

I keep a full backup of RAM, plus anything else that runs properly off the MS (dictionary, Acrobat Reader, games (Bubble Pop, Bump Attack, Zap, Vexed, Palm Jongg, Pocket Chess, Lights Out, Shuffle), Converter, HandyShopper, Sketcher, Wordsmith, SmartDoc, WorldMate ... and MP3s of my Patsy Cline greatest hits CD. AvantGo is supposed to work off the MS, but I can't make it happen.

I've got an SL10 too. I try to put most of the programs I download on the MS so as to keep extra space on the Clie. Unless I'm gonna use a program very frequently, I'd rather keep the Clie not all cluttered up. i've read that some programs will use up your battery life when not running- even when your PDA is turned off. So I want to keep that to a minimum.
oh... what security does an MS give you? Do you keep it away from your Clie at all times so that if your Clie is stolen, nobody will get the MS? At least the Clie has a password; what security does an MS have?

I have both SL20 and SL33. Transfering large files on the SL20 takes forever. The SL33 is quicker, but not "fast"
I use the stick for MP3's, games, pictures and movies.
I found that speed suffers with a large number of files in the \palm\launcher directory, as any menu program scans each file to determine usage. By moving seldom used files, the scan takes much less time.

I use it for backup, ebook, games and photos.
But, as I am loading photos with AcidImage, I can't help but wonder why the heck they made the MS access on the SJ series so slow! A VFS mark of 42 is simply not good, and it is a bit of a turn off when you try to shop pictures to someone else.

The only things I think I can add to what everyone else has said are a dictionary and some maps for Mapopolis. Like everyone else: pictures, loads of e-books, a few short movie clips of the kids, games, and a backup on a 128mb stick.
wow, so many people are reading bible ..
hm only wonder what the heck is wrong? why is the world speeding to the hell ?!
especially after the us "approach" .. read bible, prey and kill ..
whatever, it's a discussion for another board ..
to the Q => i use my 128mb MS mainly for scummVM games (cca40mb), dictionaries (30mb), backups (cca30mb), and resd for misc stuff like ms docs (quickoffice is way cool!, just looking forward for an native pdf viewer ..), photos etc

I use my MS in my NX for tons of things, but I am going to limit my list to things that can be done in a practical manner on your unit.
Actually, I'll recall my use of VFS on my Visor Pro...
ebooks
Mapopolis Maps
Apps, Apps, Apps, and Apps! Almost everything can be loaded from the MS
Database files, such as the dictionary
Word documents with Wordsmith
That's pretty much all I can think about right now. 128meg was so much back in the days of my T615... now pictures and movies seem to take up the most space on my NX.

I have 4 Memory Sticks, 2x 128MB and 2x 16MB, I use them with my Clie SJ 33 and Sony P72 digital camera. For Clie I use 128MB MS for MP3s, sometimes pictures and always backup. I also use the 16MB MS for backup and keep it separately from Clie.

I recently bought a USB Memory Stick Reader/Writer. I use it with my camera and Clie. YOu don't have to HotSync or Import/Export to load MP3s! SO much quicker!

A lot of folks talk about back-up. What program do you use to back-up on the MS?

For backup I just use the built-in MS Backup by Sony. It's extremely simple to use and it works perfectly (I tried restoring from Memory Stick with Backup and it restored everything, including all additional software, settings etc)
Some people use also Backup Buddy, or you can even use the MS Gate to backup certain files only.

What so you mean by categorize? You could put files in different folders if that's what you mean.

I know! When I have my MS in my card read to copy games or music or something, I sometimes accidentaly turn on my clie to play a game, and there's nothing on it! It's almost clean w/o MS.

umm... that is somewhat what i meant. on the pda itself, programs can be categorize as different groups such as main, system, utilites, games, etc.
but when i am veiwing my memory stick, it will show all the programs at once, can i group them together just like i assign the 'group' from the handheld. or the only way to do it is to put it in different folder?
thx

From what I understand and have heard. The MSbackup program will not allow you restore to another device though, even if it is the same model. So if your Clie dies and you get it replaced you don't have a backup.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I use the memory stick for videos (always gotta' have a Linkin Park at my fingertips) and 22 minute tv shows for when I'm at the in-laws house with nothing else to do.
I also have the thing filled up with MP3 files (96kbps so I can pack more of 'em on there.)
I use Silver Screen on my NR70V (OS4.1), which let's me move most of my apps. to the memory stick and run 'em from there, freeing up internal memory for other applications that won't run off the stick.
Also, I use WordSmith (best Word Processor, in my opinion), which let's me store my docs to the MS and categorize them (e.g., business, personal, research, etc.)
I also use HandStory and download their free e-books. I've got several books stored on the memory stick.
I also store hundreds of low quality digital images on the stick.
I also use the memory stick to impress people who are attracted to the Clie. They're usually surprised to find out that you can store so much stuff on a 128MB stick. I'm looking forward to the increased capacity of the MS Pro sticks. Aren't they supposed to eventually get up to 2GB? Although I'm sure that'll cost an arm and a leg.

I have a ton of ebooks on my memory sticks - over 100. I have a few pictures and a dictionary.
I also have some word files I use a folding keyboard with mine to take notes at meetings.

I use mine to free up space on my Clie, always fighting for more room!
OK, quickly here:
utility programs that don't need to be on the Clie
docs
ebooks
games
MP3's
short movies
backups of my Clie (had a program that wiped out my backup on my PC after creating a hard reset on my Clie:()
pics of my family
That's about all I can think of for now, but I have 7 MS's and use them all the time:)
