I use Olivetree's bible reader on my nx70, and I have been watching thier os5 updates waiting for a hires + version that will let me get rid of that virtual graffiti and give me more screen to read with. Are there any other bible programs that have added this feature yet? Does anyone know if Olivetree plans to?
Thanks

their website states that the os5 version can be used on lower Palm os versions.

This would be a cool Bible reader IF you could navigate to book AND verse. If I want to go to Psalm 119:124, this one will take me to 119:1 and I have to scroll to verse 124. Not good! :(

No! No! No!
The book picker takes you to the book, and writting 124 in the graffiti area takes you to verse 124. Swipe to the right and it goes to chapter 2, swipe back to the left, and your back to chapter 1.

Well I'll be. :) Still prefer the OliveTree method of navigation best of all of the Bible readers. I now have it, Bible Thumper, Bible Reader (Asaisoft) and Bible+1.02.
Also bought and prefer the NIV with AsaiSoft's reader and it doesn't work with Bible+ although it is a modified version of Asaisoft's. :(

The perfect Bible reader app (IMHO) would be the AsaiSoft reader interface, with OliveTree's navigation tool, Bible Thumper's search engine (very fast!), and EMP Soft's (Bible With You) notes windowing feature, built by a solid company known for outstanding support! ;) Come on Logos!!! You can do that!!! :D

click, I'm confused. Olivetree calls their program BibleReader. Were you referring to some other program as well?
wellsjs, are you running the OS5 version of Olivetree BibleReader on your OS4 unit? How is it working for you?

Sorry for the confusion. Asaisoft (www.asaisoft.com) has a program also called Bible Reader.
When you load it on your device along with Olive Tree both will show up as "Bible Reader" but with different Icons.
I found out about here on Cliesource.
As a matter of fact just about everything on my Clie is stuff I've found out about here.
wellsjs was the one who pointed out originally.

In addition to the different icons, Asaisoft's is called "Bible Reader," and OliveTree's is "BibleReader." Now there is "Bible+" which is an extension of the open source code of Asaisoft's product! ;) I'm hoping the latter will be more responsive to customer's suggestions and in improving their app than Asaisoft has!

I can confirm now that I'm running it without any apparent problems so far on my T625C (European T615C).
Definitely like the hires version of the Textus Receptus makes so much difference having the Greek text in hires.
I hope they will include a full dual translation split screen mode which would be useful.

To the original question : I am not aware of any Bible readers that are hi-res+ at the moment. Some are OS5 capable, but none that will use the graffiti area to view.
As for the issue of AsaiBible, OliveTrees PalmBible, 9.95Bible and Bible+ - they are all derived from the same open source code.
OliceTree Bible reader was the first to exist, then AsaiBible Reader came along and was a commercial venture. It could still use the free versions of the Bible PLUS had the commercial unlock codes to the NIV and Chinese (CUV and Big5) versions.
9.95Bible and Bible+ are based on the same open source code, except that they have implemented enhancements (and one charges whilst the other is still freeware).
What is confuses me is that the open software should stay the same and the main version be up-issued in revision (enhancements). But if people release their closed source version with enhancements, then there will be a fragmentation of software.
Is this a "negative" example of when open source software is hijacked by other interests than the software itself?

I too am using OliveTree's new version on my OS4.1 T415. To add to the confusion, OT has named their latest version BibleR+ instead of BibleReader. I asked if they had a version of BibleReadMe (daily reading list) for BibleR+, and they sent BRM v2.0 to me the next day. OliveTree really does a nice job. Now all I need is a faster machine to access my Bibles from MS.

Try MyBible from Laridian (www.laridian.com). This is the fastest one for searching and to jump to chapters and verses is a lot nicer (just write the number on the graffiti area, verses delimited by a full stop/period eg. chapter 24, verse 3 would be written as "24.3").
MyBible was just updated yesterday to v3.0 with a lot of new features. Unfortunately, they haven't got a demo out as yet.

I have tried many of them - I have lost count! Let's see...
* MyBible by Laridian
* BibleReader by Olive Tree
* Bible Reader for Palm by AsaiSoft
* BibleThumper by Pat Double
* MarkMyScriptures by SkimWare
* QuickVerse PDA by QuickVerse
The two I registered for was MyBible (Laridian) and BibleReader (AsaiSoft) - but my criteria for looking for a Bible reader was specific - that it had NIV and possibly ESV. Others may look for other features and so their search criteria is a bit different (such as commentaries, translations, notes etc).
There is a website which has been updated once in a while, but it has a good review of different readers : http://www.handheldministry.org/palmreviews/bibles.html
As to your question of searching speed, none of the Bible readers can do a search for ALL instances - just a page full (about 15 or so hits), then if you go to the next page, it would continue the search. Hence the speed of searching is a bit difficult to quantify or compare. But let's say that all the readers which can do a search can do it competently! :)

Bible Thumber is such a powerful tool that it is the only reason I am sticking with the Palm OS. It is perhaps 1000 times faster in searching than olive tree. It is created by a guy who does it in his spare time. He only charges 25$ for the program and you get free updates for life, he has tons of extras all avail for free downloads like dictionaries, commentaries....
I also have olive tree but I don't remember the last time I have used it because it is so slow compared to BT.

KarrieMassotti - BibleThumper is certainly a very good program since it has a lot of features - such as concordance and hebrew/greek translations as part of it. The only down side is that it has the KJV tranlsation.
The supporting features makes it a standout in a lot of functionality, but the lack of english translations hampers it.
So again - there are pros and cons to each program and it depends on what you use it for.

I think that similar criteria sound like: “My son is the best chess player among the box fighters”. What importance has the NIV translation for the search speed? Not to mention that some of these products don’t have this translation. If all the software is compatible in the search features, why you recommend us MyBible.
This simply looks like a commercial, not a discussion message.
I looked over the reviews on the mentioned site. Here are my observations.
The only one product there that is described as obtaining fast search is Bible Concordance With You. I made some efforts and checked if Bible Concordance With You possesses some of the features mentioned as advantages for MyBible (Bible With You is a shareware with a full functional trial, unlike MyBible– www.gmpsoft.com). I tried the mentioned in the review on-tap option. The search speed is such high that the results are being displayed while I am writing.
I found that the Bible Concordance With You search is more powerful compared with all other software mentioned on this site. Probably there exist even better searching Palm Bible software.

Hi,
Just out of interest what device are you running BT on? I'm running on OS4.1 33Mhz T625C and find that it's incredibly slow to start up (of all the Bible apps I use) - about 14 secs!!!!
Once loaded it's very quick. But I tend to zip between different apps when using the Bible programs (e.g. Isilo with Greek/Hebrew Concordances, Concordance with You for lookups etc) and the BT start up time really does hinder my use of the program - I have to have the TSK on the Memory Stick because of lack of RAM and I recognise this is a limitation of using the MS with BT.
I am interested to know however what device you are using and it is an OS5 device whether the load time I experience disappears ... or if you're using OS4.1 whether you have the main text and TSK in RAM?
Thanks

I agree completely..... I think!! :D
I have tried most of the Bible software out there and in my opinion the Bible With You line of products is leaps and bounds above the others purely in terms of being a pocket Bible, Concordance, etc. I believe it is relatively new, and I think this is why it is conspicuously left out of most discussions on this topic. It has, as the previous poster noted, instantaneous searches and by far the nicest interface that I have recently seen. With the advent of Strong's numbers, footnotes, study aids and the soon-to-be-added definitions feature, for me it is a no-brainer :)
YMMV, of course, but I highly recommend everyone trying it out. I can't imagine anyone being sorry that they did :)

This was not a commercial message of any sort! :)
I looked at many Bible readers and I had a few criteria which I wanted - namely NIV and ESV.
That narrowed the field down to a few readers.
You are looking for a fast search and concordance system - so that would eliminate other readers from the list. So your requirement and use criteria is different.
In the end, the requirements you need the program to use it for will determine the selection criteria. To voice them on this forum is great since it shows that you have examined an area of functionality which I may not use, but would like to be informed about.
Comparing software should be carefully qualified as people have differing requirements.

I like Olivetree as well and use it alot as well, especially for the parsed TR Greek text from www.byztxt.com. Although I'm hoping to be able to get the source converted to Bible+ soon.

After installing the new OliveTree BibleR+ program I attempted to uninstall Bible+ without difficulties. However, I crashed the NR70 when I attempted to delete some of the bible files off my 128M Flash card -- I now suspect the files may have been somehow corrupted and this may have contributed to my Bible+ fatal errors.
That said, I prefer the UI on OliveTree's program (although it is noticeably slower than Bible+) so I'll probably continue using it.

I own BibleR+, Bible+, BibleReader (Asaisoft - NIV), BibleThumper, MyBible (Laridian), and Bible With You NASB (w/Strongs). The one I use all the time is Bible With You! ;) Along with several addons (BWY Explorer, BWY Concordance) this suite is very powerful for doing in-depth Bible study. Sometimes I will refer to BibleThumper for one or more of the many commentaries (Gill being the best), but I prefer MTs over the KJV for reading. If, on the other hand, you are merely interested in reading, I would agree that one several other products will adequately do the job.
Oh yea, and BWY's support is fantastic. If you email them with a problem, you will get personalized attention. They have included several of my suggestions and fixed a couple of bugs in recent updates. They are working on one now with Concordance "searches." They are in "very active" mode in improving (updating their product). Most of the others are in "stale" mode of updating their product.

This looks really nice! Thanks for the info.
Can this program read Bibles stored on the MS? I know I can use ZL to do it, but it takes a long time to load that way. Bible+ stores the Bibles in its own directory and loads them much faster.
wellsjs

Yes, you can store all the pdb files on the MS. They can be anywhere, but for organizing purposes, I put them in a directory I named BibleWithYou. If you let the installer put them on the MS, of course they will be in the Launcher directory. BWY is a little slower than Bible+ (which is by far the fastest I've run across), but given the extra tools and colorful popup windows with links to cross-referenced verses, Strongs numbers, etc., it's definately worth a slight "drag." ;)
To update reference made to them working on a problem with concordance searches, I got an email today saying it had been fixed. I downloaded the NASB Concordance again, and sure enough, the problem is fixed. They are great! Said it before and I'll say it again, they are the ZZTechs of Bible software apps.

I was referring to Bible+'s loading and scrolling speed. I haven't used it's search feature much. BWY's search feature is another app in itself (Concordance With You). Makes it a little more costly, but CWY is blazing fast and will search "and," "or," "not," "wildcard," and "phrase."

That sounds great on the search options! I'll have to check out BWY and CWY. Thanks for the info and clarification.

MyBible is Hi-Res+, I didn't see that mentioned anywhere. It also has highlighting, and note taking in the new version.

To each his own. If highlighting/notes are important, then MyBible does those well. I prefer reference and search capabilities with easy linking. MyBible does popup windows but you can't go to a verse reference by tapping on it. BWY you can! All the various Palm Bible apps do "something" well. None of them do it all well. In my opinion, BWY is bent on getting there more than the others! Maybe their next release will add highlighting and notes! ;)

Add me to the list of Olive Tree users. They had the only Full Catholic version of the NAB at the time I downloaded it.

I use Laridians My Bible on my NX60 and it fills the entire screen. I only pop up the graffiti area to do a search or to navigate.

Yes, unfortunately Zondervan Publishers (copyright owners of the NIV) are scrupulous in managing licensing of the NIV. They negoiate a hard line and make it expensive. You used to get a cheap version here:
www.asaisoft.com
but I see that they are "Out of stock!" How do you become out of stock with downloads? I suspect Zondervan has something to do with it . . . like lawyers!
You can get the NIV here:

LanMan,
Can you navigate to that page from their home page? I have not figured how to "surf" to this hidden page.

I haven't found a way to get there from the homepage, so you may want to bookmark.

Well, It looks like i will stick with MyBible then, as it has NIV. I like everything about it, with the exception that you can pick the verse from a drop down, u have to scroll through... Seems like MyBible's only weakness, so I dont understand why they dont fix such a seemingly easy thing to implement.

Has anyone found a greek font for Hires? Their FontSymGreek that comes with the free greek text downloads doesn't work on hires.
Olive Tree Support said they are searching for a good hires font as of a month ago.

You don't have to scroll. Just do a double tap in the graffiti area and then write the number of the verse you want to jump to in the graffiti area. To change chapters, just write in the number without tapping the screen. To bring up the FIND/SEARCH window, just write an "f" in graffiti. It really is easy to navigate and fast when you get used to it. I think the documentation with MyBible gives all of the available graffiti controls.

Yeah, I always read the documentation as a last resort too ;) . In fact, I ran across the graffiti tips at a Palm Bible review page below:

Those interested in the NIV cheap, Asaisoft's reader is free and you can get the NIV in this bundle for $18:
http://www.asaisoft.com/ibs/purchase.shtml
I use this one for reading and following the pastor's sermon in church as he teaches from the NIV text. I prefer Bible With You for search and research. ;)

best hi-res Bible i have found is mybible you may pay a bit but it is the smallest in size and fastest interface i have seen so far you can also put all the bibles on either cf if you have it or memory stick the money is worth it. go to www.laridian.com i currently have 3 versions on mine and it works flawless using the stowaway keyboard even in finding chapters and verses or particular words.

Thanks for the heads up. I check their site regularly for updates, but I guess I missed this one. "Verse Locking" or syncronization is cool. In fact, it's a must, but it only works for me when using the screen tap. The two windows get out of sync when using the jog dial! ;)

That's a good point. I had even figured out the verse locking feature because I ALWAYS use the jog. Maybe we should email Olivetree to integrate the jog dial with verse locking? I will shoot them an email today.

They have also added some nice devotionals recently:
Spurgeon's Daily Treasury from the Psalms
Strength For Today - John MacArthur
I'm currently reading through the Bible in a year using one of Laridian's plans and then doing these two devotionals. The hyperlinks in the devotionals take you directly to the scripture reference (in the translation you have selected in MyBible), and then you can tap right back to where you were in the devotional. Makes for a wonderful quite time alone with God! :)
My favorite PDA Bible software remains Bible With You by GMPSoft:
www.gmpsoft.com
Their products aren't cheap, but they are first class and support is phenominal! I asked them to add the NIV and I'm sure they would like to, but the copywrite owner, Zondervan doesn't waiver from very expensive partnerships. I have been helping GMPSoft debug some betas and early releases, and they have given me some nice "Promo Points," redeemable for purchasing products. Again, these folks (Joan in particular) are first class Saints! ;)

I should say I am very happy with PalmBible+ which I use with the RSV (and the LXX/GNT/BHS/Peshitta texts)--accuracywise, the RSV can't be beat among 20th century translations I think. I've even toyed with the idea of porting Plucker's antialiased font support to PB+ but haven't got around to it.

That's sounds excellent if you ever get around to porting the fonts across Pruss. Would you being willing to let us know if/when you do this and make them available?
Thanks

That's what I use with Bible With You by GMPSoft.com. For a long time I relied on the NIV, but have found myself more and more looking to the NASB in critical texts! Having said that, the RSV is certainly an acceptable text for critical biblical scholarship! ;)

I wonder if I should butt in here, but since we are on the topic I am going to.
The RSV is not considered a fair translation by most. It was done by a biased group of translators (relatively small group too) from one denomination. The most authoritative translations are NASB, NKJV, and the most recent one - ESV. I would stay away from The Message, the NIV, or any of the hip modern-age translations. If you have to use a free one (such as one online) use the ASV.

Where did you find the RSV for PalmBible+?
pruss

Nowhere. I've rolled my own. I can email to you, but you need to read, print out, sign and mail the agreement form to CCAT first (the main provisions are: no commercial use, and must report all typos). Then send me an email that you've done this to: ap85 at georgetown.edu and I'll send you the text.
