View Full Version : Why U MUST Have PowerBtn -> as panel

I had a very unexpected crash, & my poor TX's power button is deader 'n doornail. The crash did leave my myKbd background in the grafitti area & maintained the customized icons (they can get stuck w/a crash when you use customizing tool to change fm default), but it would go into an endless loop & when I tried regular stylus reset, it looped again.

I did a warm reset, holding 5-way button up while I put stylus into the back of the TX to reset, to avoid loading whatever prob fm the crash fm loading into RAM. I then went to the prefs screen, & fortunately- I had PowerBtn there as a preference panel.

I did a hard reset fm the panel (an option you should definitely use when loading PowerBtn) & restored fm backup. Otherwise, I might have had to wait until my TX's power drained completely & maybe then, it would've allowed me to restore. Not sure, however, maybe it woulda been bricked.

PowerBtn's Hard Reset fm Pref Panel did the trick.

Then it was Resco to the rescue... I used Resco Explorer (new version is great) tapped & held on app icon in RAM view of RExplorer, then chose Special Filter, & chose 'This App Files' to isolate all old, Ver8 DTG files, Selected All, deleted & then went on my merry way to Resco Backup to restore the scheduled full b/u done at 6am today & I was back in business in less than 10 minutes.

Moral of the story, get the free PowerBtn, choose to save it as a Preference Panel (this survives most crashes) & in an emergency similar to above, run Hard Reset fm w/in PowerBtn. Oh, I almost forgot, backup regularly, & keep RBackup & RExplorer on your SD card, in the /Palm/Launcher directory; they are great tools to have.

Hope this helps others to avoid having a crash require you to wait until power runs out 'cause your TX power button is dead!

or you can just get the hard reset app it used from my site, and change it's type to "panl" and thus have a hard reset panel :-)
if you want to avoid the extra space of powerbtn

hey dmitry I already tried to change hard reset 5 from appl to panl but that doesn't change anything. It hides it from the launcher and it shows up in the preferences panel but won't launch.

I had the same experience as BrentDC and reported it then, right after dmitrygr made the suggestion the first time. It would be terrific if it actually did work like he said it would.

hey ferdferd, I agree it would be great to have it as a panel, but just changing its type won't do it. I've tried it with this and other things (like snapcalc5) and it didn't work either. I did a little digging on the Internet and saw somewhere that it has to be implemented in the source code (yes I know I'm like the only person on here that doesn't know how to program). I was just hoping Dmitry would enlighten us...

hey Dmitry, hard reset 5 now shows up as a panel and can be launched, but CAN'T BE CANCELED! When I press a button it resets the countdown to 10secs but won't exit.

Works for me... I just tried it ---> Changed to put in prefs panel ---> launched to test---> pressed button to cancel ----> Works great!! :D

What button did you use to try and stop the HR? I used one of the 4 Hard Buttons and not the 5-way.

I think I first pressed the center button on the five way, but when it didn't cancel I started madly pressing all kinds of buttons (can't really remember which ones I was in a mad panic). Maybe I'll try again with pressing one of the front four, although I'm a little skittish...

Okay I tried it and the front four kind of work. The center button on the five way will not work but if I hit one of the app buttons or the rockers it will cancel the hard reset. The hard reset app will act as if your in the preferences program i.e. if you hit the front four buttons it will launch that app, or if you hit one of the rocker buttons it will move the selection, but if you hit the center button it will relaunch HR5. I think the old version used to take you back to your launcher by pressing any button, although I'm not sure.

it is not a fully correct panel, just a quick hack :-)
