I've decided to get a tungsten C to replace my nx70. How do I transfer all the data and apps from my old clie to the tungsten C? Will Palm's tungsten C synchronize with the old data from my Clie desktop software? Are there any free back up programs I can find for the apps on my clie? How will I transfer files from my memory stick to the sd card? thanks for your help..

Well, here is something I found out interesting. I tried a T|T on a Windows 98 system and then without uninstall Palm Desktop I tried a Sony NX70V. All I had to do to get it to HotSync (at least under Win98), was to install the drivers for the Clie. After that it would HotSync with Palm's Palm Desktop for the T|T.

Don't you think you'd be better of asking that question in a Palm Forum? You may have to update a few apps and the Palm Desktop will have to changed and maybe a few other things.

Good luck!

Au contraire mon amie. The Tungsten C is more than twice as fast and as much as 10 faster on some processes. The screen is far superior (altough the 320x320 vs. 320x480 is a MAJOR drawback) and the 64 mb vs. 16 mb is obviously 4 times as much (and greatly needed). Clearly the NX70V is a sweet pda, but it's no Ferrari compared to the Tungsten C. I'm not saying the Tungsten is the Ferrari either - just both great pdas.

WHOA... the screen is FAR superior? Uhh...no... I have seen them side by side and there is not a distinguishable difference. Same screen as the new iPaqs a VERY nice screen but certainly not superior and FOR SURE not FAR superior. I passed on the TT because, A) I like the bigger screen and the clamshell B) it is NOT a multimedia machine, made for power business users. The headphone jack seemed to be mono but maybe not. At any rate, the NX70 is the better multimedia machine. My reason for upgrading RAM and processors would be better game EMUs and multimedia which the T-C does NOT offer. Enjoy though!

So you won't miss sound? I mean Mono was ok like 40 years ago, but this IS 2003.

I was pretty excited about the Tungsten C when I picked it up too, but the sound is a deal killer.

Stupid Palm. SO CLOSE!!

uh.. I asked a question about switching... Not to get people telling me to ask the question elsewhere or to tell me the sound on the Tungsten C sucks.... Please quit ostracizing people who have left the Clie clan. The NX70 is great and is the best multimedia PDA in existence.. I know that as well as ya'll know that. I have my reasons for really liking the Tungsten C, and they obviously are not its multimedia capabilities. PLease, somebody, answer my original question because I think it is a totally legitimate one for a clie forum, considering I have an issue involving a Clie and Palm...

I am thinking about doing that same exact switch...what do you and don't you like? Would you recommend switching if I get the chance? No money involved, but just straight across nx70 to T|C...I am trying to get as much info as possible and your firsthand experience might help me out. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Hey Baker... Hook 'em! I'm a student at UT Austin! Post your email, and I'll let you know my first impressions on the tungsten C. I'm afraid people like n2ifp might take it personally if I post that info in this forum...

couldn't agree more; what a bunch of losers. why make a device that is 80% of great and leave off a few great features like stereo sound, a voice recorder and a bigger screen? Oh well, the Tungsten C is a brief pit stop for me until Sony releases a unit w/ virtual graffiti, more RAM and hopefully a faster processor (obviously with all the other goodies as well).

Do you know where your data folder is? If so, make a back up copy on you desktop in a different folder. I don't remember, but I think Sony keeps the data in a different folder than palm does. No matter. Once you have a back up in a safe place, install the new Palm desktop software that came with your Tungsten. Open the new desktop and see if your data was automatically found. If not, go to the back up you created, find the "back up" folder inside your data folder, copy and paste all of the old back up data into your new Palm "back up" folder which is found in Palm, [user name], back up. Is this too technical? If so, reply and I'll add more steps.

As for the MS to SD, get a multi card reader. Insert the MS, open the drive icon, copy all contents to some folder of your choice on your PC, take out the MS, insert the SD, find you copied data and paste it into the SD drive. You will probably have some file associations that are broken. If you have apps that read data on the MS you'll probably have to point them to the data again on the new device.

Good luck and enjoy your T|C.

Nevermind Baker, Nzifp will just have to grit his teeth and deal with the truth.. ;)........... (that's what you get for telling me to get lost!) ; )

I simply love having Wifi integrated.. I like the smaller form factor compared to the nx70, and I like that a Lexar sd card with 256 mb can be found for around $70. The screen is also amazing, and side by side with an NX70, I'd have to say the Tungsten C is noticeably brighter and the colors are more saturated... True, the nx70 also has a wifi card option, but so far, there is no way to use the CF card driver and the wifi card at the same time, and I'm not about to get expensive mspro cards... I also realized that even though I'm extremely fast with graffiti, (and i'm almost error proof at this point), I can still input data more quickly with a thumb keyboard, which the Tungsten C has made much more accessible than the one on the nx70.... I'm also a fan of the 5-way pad, it makes one handed use a breeze.. I like the 400 mhz processor. I went to CompUSA and beamed some apps from my nx70 to the Tungsten C. Here's what I noticed.. Opening Repligo, for example, with the nx70 takes about a second... Its instantaneous with the Tungsten C. Oh, and one more thing... I don't need stereo sound! Mono is virtually the same! The external speaker is wonderful.. Its loud, crisp, and vibrant.. Sure, I don't get stereo sound when I plug in a headset, but I already have an mp3 player.. The functionality of this unit is more to the point. Storing data, and retreiving data, and doing so in a straightforward manner.. My ONLY concern about making the switch is the plastic casing.. I'm ok with it to be honest.. I had an m105 many years ago and the plastic casing lasted an eternity... I assume the same will be true for the casing of this unit. Furthermore, with wifi and a huge battery in this unit, I'm rather thankful the case is plastic rather than metal to cut down on weight and avoid wifi interference...

I'll reply briefly. I just typed a huge review/comparison and was ready to post and bumped something with my mouse and lost it all - I'm so pis#$%^^!!!! I don't have the gumption to type it all again.

If you use your pda primarily as a multi-media device then you shouldn't switch. If you use the mp3 feature often then you probably shouldn't switch. If you love the clam shell feature then you'll probably be annoyed with a leather 'flap' protector.

If you are a data power user then it's definitely a step up. The fast processor rocks. The extra memory is a must (64mb vs. 16mb). It let's you keep most if not all of your apps and data in RAM. PowerRun is a great app, but shouldn't be necessary. A manufacturer should put enough RAM on board to not make this necessary.

The screen is the best on any Palm OS pda to date (I've had 11 including 3 Sony's). Beam Bejeweled to the T|C in the store and compare it to your Sony. The blacks are so much deeper and all of the colors are more vibrant and crisp.

I love the D-pad. I'll bet everyone will who tries it.

The T|C has mono sound. What a stupid decision! How much money could they have possibly saved by putting in mono sound?!!! !@$&#$%!!!! How lame that they didn't step up and make a device that could be a good multi-media machine. Again, if mp3 is your goal, this is not the device for you. My guess is that they are working on a replacement for the T|T and they didn't want to include that feature here so that geeks like me who buy a new palm device every 4-6 months would buy this one and the buy the new T|T when it comes out. Oh well, they're right - I probably will (as long as they get rid of the slider and go with virtual graffiti).

The keyboard doesn't suck as bad as I expected. Obviously, it would be better/great to have virtual graffiti and more screen real estate. However, if you don't mind giving up some screen space then it's OK. It's nice to have hard keys for menu, command, home, shortcut, etc...

The WiFi may be good for you. I have a WiFi network at home, but can't figure out why I'd send email from my Palm or surf the net from my Palm when my computer (with DSL) is 20 steps away??? I guess corporate clients will appreciate this feature, but I think my attitude would be the same at work. My guess is that IT purchasing people will like the specs on the device and buy them. Palm has such a weak presence in the enterprise market that they are making their best play to get in there with this device. With the extra RAM, faster processor, best screen and WiFi they are speaking the language of the IT purchasing people - even if the end user won't use all of the "functionality".

Hopefully this will give you some comparison points. To any Sony diehards who are annoyed that we're talking about Palms in this forum, I apologize. It really does seem like a good place to discuss the virtues of the the two devices together. Anyway, I'm still a Sony fan at heart. I just want them to release a device like the TG50, but with virtual graffiti, more memory and a faster processor (although the processor speed is not that big of a deal).

Good luck to you, Rich

PS that really was the brief version

Is there a true red display in the new Palms? Are the colors as washed out as they are on the Clies?

No they aren't washed out at all. The colors look like they do on my computer - truly brilliant.

falafel - can you get the wifi working on campus like at the union or in welch? I tried with the nx and it wouldn't work for some reason...I might have done something wrong. Also, how is the little flip cover that comes with the T|C? I don't think any of the best buys in town have them in stock so i can't have a hands on test. thanks...

falafel - looks like you made an informed decision based on your needs. Good luck with the Palm!

Now excuse me for continuing the OT discussion. ;) I added WiFi to my NX mostly for the geek factor. I don't have a practical use for it yet. It would be great if I was still in school and could use it while in class. I know OcellNuri is always using his while at school. And there are some work locations where I'll be able to play with it, so that'll be cool.

chill out falafel,
A palm forum like brighthand would be a good place, considering you are going FROM clie TO Palm...it makes sense that the forum of the group you are moving TO would have more information about the transition, no?

Love the T|C screen by the way, saw it at fry's next to NX and TG...jaw-droppingly good...

Hey Baker.. I had the exact same problem with the nx. I couldn't get it working at the Union, or at Welch.. I have no idea why.. My wireless laptop works there just fine.. There are a few buildings on campus where the wifi does work. I think all the computer sci buildings have a different structure to their wireless networks, so the NX70 works fine in those buildings! I haven't tested the tungsten C yet on campus, but I'll let you know what the results are as soon as I do! Oh.. and by the way, both CompUSA's in Austin have the Tungsten C's in stock!

Me too I'm seriously thinking of switching to T/C for the same reasons. Even though I bought the CF driver and it works fine but it's a pain to have to switch to WiFi and back and I need my WiFi at least 6 hours a day at work.
I noticed that I never used my NX-60's MP3 player and I never used the NX's keyboard either so I'm tempted by the smaller size of the Palm T/C. The only thing that still holds me back is the NX's 320x480.

For you Austin guys, Circuit City on 183 has the Tungsten|C on display. I played with it yesterday and found it quite tempting. I'm just going to wait to see what Sony's volley will be, and then it will either be that or the T|C I think. God, it's fast. And I found the on screen G2 alright too...I think I could get used to it.

I'm close to replacing my nr70 and was wondering if anyone has a best guess on when Sony's next clie will be released. I'm really tempted for the first time to buy a Palm after seeing the new Tungsten. I have an ipod for mp3s, but wonder why a 400mz, 64 ram pda would not be a better multimedia handheld than a 200mz with 16 ram? I don't need a cheap camera, just a fast pda with good color and lots of memory.
I'd wait on Sony, if I thought there was anything close.
thanks for the Tungsten info.

It's all about the screen and the mono sound. With the smaller screen 16:9 video gets really small and the mono sound should be self explanitory.

However, for games, 4:3 video, pictures, video w/o sounds (like short, humorous clips that get perenially emailed) it's pretty great.

I definitely won't be buying a Sony product again.

The Tungsten C seems like a good device, but there are two deal breakers:

1) Sound, as mentioned before. How expensive can it be to put stereo sound?? Heck, I'll buy an MP3 software app if cost is a concern. Jeezzz...

2) How can ANYONE live without the jog dial??! I have carried a Blackberry since their inception and loved the scroll wheel from day one. It is probably why I picked my T665 over a Palm unit. You wanna talk about a simple, yet mandatory feature? The jog dial is it. I haven't touched a Palm since my VIIx, so I will assume that there is no wheel on the new ones, right?

Sony, please come out with an updated T665 form factor (read: NO keyboard or clamshell) using the Tungsten C specs. Please, please, please... :D

How about an new line altogether. None of their devices have ever had VG and no clamshell - correct? Well, why dont they release a new series for that - something like the Clie TX? Something like that - i dont care, i am not in sony marketing. you get the idea though. Some people (not me) like having a KB and have no need for graffiti all that often.
Let them be. If they = money to sony all the better. Sony is trying to cover all bases - and itll work. want proof - sadly, but true - MS. Every device type in the world can run one of their OS's.

baker: I didn't change any setting.. Using the tungsten C's includied web browser, I tried to go to www.cliesource.com.. It automatically detecting the Tsunami ssid and sent me to the Eid login page... I logged in, and I could finally browse the web.. Plus, my other internet software like AIM, and versamail worked instantly.. and like you, I found it impossible to get my nx70 to connect on campus no matter what I did to the settings, which was a major mystery and an even more major disappointment. The tungsten C works on campus, and the battery life is stupendous. I was chatting on aim for about an hour, and my battery life dropped to 78%! That's not bad for an hour of intensive wifi use!
