i have the wifi card and a wireless network at home so what i do is have my clie in my cradle in my room and open icq, so i can be playing my guitar and icq my friends at the same time. the problem is, my clie keeps auto-switching off because i don't actually touch it that often. i've set prefs to 'stay on in cradle', but doesn't seem to work, is it because the cradle isn't connected to my pc, only to the charger? i normally hotsync with a third party usb cable/charger, and my clie autoswitches off that way too. does 'stay on in cradle' only apply when i'm using the cradle connected to the usb port of a pc? is there some other way to make it stay on?

Try out "Always On." You can find it at PalmGear

If you want a very cheap way to keep your Clie on, just use the programmer shortcut. Open memopad and write a cursive 'L' then make a '.' and then write the number '3' (all of those without the '' ). Your Clie should say 'No Auto-Off'. You are then into a developer mode. Your Clie should stay on forever(or until the battery runs down). The only thing you have to remeber is to do a soft-reset when you want to turn the feature off. There is no other way to turn it off besides that. I also think that your battery will continue to discharge if you manually turn the Clie off. Haven't tested that though.

The developer shortcut works. However, the battery will not discharge while the unit is off.
I use AlwaysOn myself... I leave it on 1 hour. Good for my IM programs.

By the cursive L you mean a lowercase cursive L, or a loop. Also, you can do this anywhere, even at the Launcher menu. Of course, then you won't see the [No Auto-Off] prompt. You can tell that it worked at the Launcher menu, however, because the screen will scroll (if using the Clie Launcher - I can't speak for any other).
You can turn off this feature without a soft reset by going into the System/Prefs/General window and just clicking on the "Auto-Off After" feature (you don't have to change the setting) and then exiting back to the home menu.
Another interesting, if not useful shortcut is Loop-.-4. It shows the device's Hot-Sync User Name for a few seconds.

If I'm not mistaken, the Stay On in Cradle option will work UNLESS you have used Security to enable security after a preset amount of time. Unfortunately, don't have my cradle near to test. But, see if you have that feature on, and try disabling it.

After writing out a shortcut in Memopad, do you have to keep that memo, or can you delete it?

You don't have to keep it. That is just a way to get visual confirmation that the shortcut worked.

If you do not use Security setting then Stay on will work without switching off
