View Full Version : Wireless on Clie is slow?
Okay, maybe I'm expecting too much.
When Best Buy decided to practically give away the Clie wireless cards, I bought one. I didn't have a wireless network, so I later purchased a router with a wireless access point built in (SMC).
It's slow. I tried Netfront, but a 2 meg app which needs 4 meg free? I switched to Blazer. As long as I stick to text, it's usable. But add in an image or two and the thing is *slow*.
Is that typical? Is that something I just have to get used to on the Clie?
Sean.

Turn power save off on the wireless preferences. I too was getting awful performance on my Dlink at home until I did that.

Absolutely, with PowerSaveMode checked, it causes the card to constantly pole the WAP and thus slows things down. Additionally it can cause dropped connections and in some cases lock you out altogether.

*snicker*
"Pole the WAP"
To quote Dave Barry, "Sounds like a good name for a rock band."
So, what price is Best Buy dumpin' these cards at?

I got mine @ Provantage.com for $125-not eaxctly a dump, but with the Sony $50 mail in rebate, the net cost is 1/2 list price! At $75 bucks, I HAD to buy it! Now I sit in Starbuck's and surf T-Mobile Hot Spots!

I think someone should put together a little utility to measure the actual WL100 throughput.
I can understand why Netfront is slow -- it needs to render the html, but downloading an email attachment... it shouldn't be !

With AOL 3.0 is it VERY fast. Also seems plenty fast with WebPro... The issue is NOT the card, it is the processor and code on the Clie. If I take my WL100 and plug it in my laptop I get lightning fast speeds... 3000kps or so...

Perhaps it's not the WL100, but what about the TCP/IP stack in Clie?

One day I'll buy the WL110... just to try. Meanwhile, I'm at my laptop, using my home Wireless Network :)

Are you subscribed to T-Mobile service? There are two different kinds of service, one is strictly for cellular.
The Hot Spot should be able to give you the necessary parameters.

You need to pay to log into a T-Mobile hotspot.
Without paying, I can connect (great strong signal), but my NX60 freezes badly when trying to open either WebProV or Blazer and I believe this is because I'm not entering any further than the "vestibule" of the Hotspot. Pay for time (Borders often offers a quick an' easy "trial" period) and see if you still have difficulty. I'll be trying this when I get the free time!

the free trial period is only good if you have a paid account (eg. pay as you go $6 min, prepaid $50/300minutes min, or yearly/unlimited account). starbucks and borders, and even t-mobile stores in malls, if you want to check your email while shopping.
