Dell is one of the first company to offer a solid state drive in a laptop. In their tests other hardware are bound to fail before the solid state drive, in fact their writings claims it is twice as rugged as a hard drive:

Meanwhile the difference between a laptop and a PDA is narrowing.

A SSD essentially is a PCB with a few chips soldered onto it - imagine it like a graphics card or stuff...so it has no moving parts. Main risk is PCB breakage imho, which is very hard to make happen(imho)...
