Does anyone know of a freeware app that I can use to record my personal finance? Specifically, I am looking for something that is compatible with Excel so that I can transfer data that I already have in Excel to the application.

sorry to inform you...
but good things cost
there are a lot of freeware out there, but most of the good stuff
are shareware, yet still, I'm always happy to support a good developer...

Try MyCheckbook (http://www.thequickster.com/products/) You can import/export to Excel and it is very full featured. Best of all it's free and great developer support.

EDIT: it's the third app on the page.

I agree, MyCheckbook is an absolutely stellar program. I've been using for about over a year, and it never ceases to surprise me - it is by far the most effective and valuable freeware i've ever encountered.

Everything you'd expect in a finance tracker is here, e.g. multiple accounts, predetermined payments, etc... The only thing it lacks in my opinion is a piechart or graph, but it really isn't important. Download it and try it, it's the BEST freeware finance tracker, and ranks up there with those costly ones.

Just a sidenote here. Don't overlook a program just because it is freeware. You will do yourself an injustice. For instance...HandyShopper. It is one of my most used programs.

And, just to stay OT ;) if you look in the file section on the HandyShopper yahoo group, you will find a checkbook database.

Sorry for going off topic, but I downloaded HandyShopper because of the rave reviews it got, but just never used it! Curious: what exactly do you use it for? Maybe I just couldn't think of the right applications for it.

Thanks ;)

I use mine to shop. I'm constantly finding things during the week that I've run out of. I note them in Handyshopper, then when I go shopping I use it as checklist. It works quite well.

Ok, here is what I use HandyShopper for:

FlyLady cleaning schedule. I enter weekly chores, monthly chores, and quarterly chores.
Shopping list, of course. Worth it's weight in gold.
@Agenda. A database for things I want to talk to people about. For example, I have my doctor listed there, and add things I want to bring up on my next checkup.
@Waiting. A database that keeps track of anything I am waiting for. Example: return phone calls, rebates, refunds, insurance reimbursments, catalog or internet shopping orders.
AutoCare. Keeps track of when I changed oil, tires, battery, or did maintenance.
Gifts. A database of all my family members with listings for ideas for gifts, what they have asked for, what I have bought.
I Owe You's. If I owe someone money, or if someone owes me money.
Menus. A list of all my menu ideas, with recipes included. Every 2 weeks I make a menu for the next 2 weeks, and use the recipes for my shopping list.
Movies to Watch. Contains movies I want to see, ones I did see, the top 100 movies of all time.
Pets. A database to keep track of trips to the vet, vaccinations, meds given, boarding, DOB, office visits, weights.
Recipes. Just a database of recipes. Some of them are getting worked into my Menu database.
Phone #'s. A list of in house phone numbers for the hospital in which I work. Makes for easy calling.
TV Listings. A database of shows I like to watch, the nights and times and channels.

I kept my finances on the palm for about 4 months using freecoins, though finally replaced it with ultrasoft money when I got microsoft money as a gift from my step-father. At the time my finances were still simple as I had just left the hospital and had only living expenses and related, no phone, no cable, etc for a while. I added them gradually as I could afford them.

I use Splash Money, but it's not freeware, but part of the Splash Wallet suite. I sync it with Quicken to keep track of my finances and I eliminated my checkbook register too.

You can find most of them at the yahoo groups http://groups.yahoo.com/group/handyshopper/?yguid=134884533

I uploaded a couple that I made, and the rest I downloaded from their 'files' section. If you find one you like, you can tweak it more to fit your own needs. There are many many more databases that members have uploaded. Check in all the folders.

PS/ I forgot to add "Trips". This is a database of what I need to pack for a trip for me and my husband. And it is made in such a way that I can pack items for a cold or warm destination. Really handy. Has saved me from forgetting items and really takes the stress out of packing for a trip.

Anniebluesky... Wonderful! Thanks for all the insight!!

Previously, I just couldn't think of how to use this program, since I thought that it was primarily for shopping... well me being a college student in rags i hardly EVER shop - but now this makes me want to DL the program again and give it another whirl... thanks again!

Holy cow, this is way cool!  I used to use HandyShopper then lost interest due to some lacking features, but now, wow.  Amazing!  And thanks for the list and the link!  I'll be setting up DB's all night now *grin*

I just uploaded my routine to the HandyShopper yahoo group. I added a note section to show how I use it and set it up. Good luck flying!! It has made a world of difference in my house, and took away all the stress. :)

You can find it here under "Chores and Errands". It is called 'HS2_EZ_Flylady'
