PIC is reporting that Colligan officially announced that Palm will be launching it's own Linux platform.

Let's hope that this will be to Palm what OS X was to Apple.

"Colligan highlighted and stressed a few points about the new platform. He continually stressed the importance of the user experience citing the ability to have an instant on, highly portable device with great battery life. Other highlights included greater hardware flexibility and the ability to handle simultaneous voice and data, two key ares which have hampered the traditional Palm OS in recent years." From PIC article linked by Intellidryad.

So is the ability to simultaneous voice and data another codeword for concentrating on the Treo platform? Or will they return the microphone ability to the pda?

Does great battery life mean that the pdas and other platforms will have larger batteries, weigh more, or just lasting one day is great battery life. Unfortunately it may also mean no wi fi and other energy using capability?

Stay tuned folks the show is still going on.....

As this is more of a software announcement, I would tend to assume that great battery life here means an OS with less excess blot code to conserve power consumption, and also great power management features.

Any how, the real judgment of this new platform should wait until the details come out. Hope this would finally be something that makes the Palm community exciting once again.

To quote Bonnie Raitt, "Let's give 'em something to talk about...". intellidryad you are SO right! Even if the linux kernal approach has problems, it WILL give us 1srcer's a reason to check in and post. And that's a very positive thing. I really miss the deep discussions about what if so&so comes out with hardware that does this or that; followed by 20+ comments on why it wouldn't happen or why the poster isn't thinking big enough....
