View Full Version : Lifespan of NX screen?

I have been using PC and Apple laptops for a few years now and it is commonly accepted that the bulbs which backlight the monitors gradually fade over time. I have noticed this particularly when comparing a brand new laptop with one which is a year old, same make and model.

I just wondered if the Clie range, and in fact other PDA's, are subject to the same deterioration? Assuming that they are, and I cant see why they wouldn't be, has anyone any idea if it's possible to have the bulb(s) replaced and if so, how much it might cost?

Joe It's hard to say, really. For one thing, the NXs haven't been out very long . . . not even a year. For another, Sony keeps changing/improving the screen, so knowing the lifespan of older screens is n't really helpful . . . I don't know what to tell you, lol, I've never kept a PDA long enough to worry about it. ;)

The displays do dim slighty (if I'm not mistaken, the 'bulb' is in fact a cold cathode tube running up the left of the screen). However, I wouldn't worry too much about it ... I've got laptops that are 5-6 years old which got used a significant amount and their screens, whilst not as bright as brand new ones, are still plenty bright enough to use. The thing is, it is almost impossible to make a comparison anyway because you can't compare with an identical one as both would have faded somewhat (unless it was never used) and you can't compare with a new screen as the technology would have improved!

I'd say don't worry :D

The lifespan should exceed 10,000 hours :)!

You know, I think if my screen did dim somewhat, I wouldn't care. I might even be happy . . . lol . . . I'm one of the people that whine about the lowest setting STILL being too bright . . . ;)

My NX is rarely above 50% brightness.

I owned a Visor Prism for over two years. The screen was almost unreadable without a backlight. When I finally sold the Prism, I had noticed a slight dimming in the brightness of the light, but it wasn't enough for me to worry about. The NX60/70 is even newer technology. I wouldn't worry too much about it. By the time it dims enough to be noticable, it'll probably time to sell it off for a newer model...

Sean.

the "bulbs" are actually white LED's (Light Emitting Diodes) and *may* fade over time, but the the change would be very slow and almost imercetible as White LED technonlgy has improved.

I'd say your best bet is to ask someone who still has a clie N760C...those have been around for some time now and if their screens are still ok...it should give you some indication at least....

Well, I still have my N760, and it's still beautiful, but the screen technology changed, and the NX screen is vastly different (and MUCH brighter) than the 760. Of course, there's a huge difference between the NR & the NX. NZ & NX are similar, however (not that I have an NZ, but I've certainly drooled over the display at CC often enough....)

There isn't much difference between my NR70 and my NX70's screens, but yes there was a huge difference from the N760C.

I have a new apple laptop g4. The problem I'm having is that the clie install disk does not load on the apple os platform only windows. I have a clie nx70 palm and I don't know anything about apple os yet. Does anyone have any tips or can direct me in the right direction.

But, to answer attempt to answer your (revised) question...
