Hi,

I recently purchased a TX and have been playing around with it for a bit. (it's great BTW and I should have gotten it sooner). I've done quite a bit of reading on this site's forums and others, but am wondering what others recommend for DVD rippers on the Mac. I would use TCPMP on the TX. I'm using an very old 400 mhz G3 iMac running 10.3.9 w/ 384 megs of ram, but plenty of HD space. Thanks for any help!

The only ones to use are:
Mac The Ripper
and
HandBrake

--I generally prefer HandBrake, as it does the encoding as well. Mac The Ripper is good if I'm going to be re-authoring the DVD (early in my movie making days, I foolishly stored my video on compiled DVD with no raw source backups).

Handbreak has been replaced with MediaFork... http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/24032

:) Thanks for those suggestions. I've downloaded them and am going to play with it over the weekend.

Remember, though, that video ripping and converting uses a LOT of RAM and Processor. It is going to go very slow on your old Mac... :(

Handbreak has been replaced with MediaFork...
Actually, Handbrake and Mediafork merged (http://handbrake.m0k.org/?p=42). The app will be called Handbrake.

I didn't see that until after I posted... :o

That's ok, it's a common misconception.

Anyway, I agree about the first suggestions. Go with MacTheRipper and Handbrake.

Mac the Ripper is very good, but it helps to have a few in case you need something special or one doesn't work.

For actual rippers also try:
DVDBackup 1.3

DVDBackup is free and a great program, simple and works

Once you have a useable Video TS folder:

You could also try DVD2one, it does compression to pear it down to a more manageable size with preferences.

Or try Visual Hub/iSquint.

Roxio also has one out called Popcorn 2

I was using ffmpeg for a long time - a lot of them are based on that.

There are others but those are the best IMHO!
