What you guys think about the rumors/news about Palm probably being sold March 22? What do you think this means for Palm OS and Palm in general.

I think that if they are sold, we may start seeing WiFi Treos but the OS is questionable depending on who has the highest bid or who buys it. Like Nokia would mean the end of Palm OS Garnet.

Depends on who does the buying.

I'm afraid some cellphone maker like Nokia would just kill off any Palm/Treo development, and sell any resources they couldn't use to make their own line of smartphones.

OTOH, an outfit like Google would probably love to use the Treo as their upcoming "gPhone" Web-based application and search appliance. (And maybe that's what Jeff Hawkins' secret third business line is.)

I don't think they are going to be sold... but I have a record of being wrong on these kind of things... ;)

The fishy thing about this is that the Palm quarterly report will be anounced. If they know that disapointing results are coming they are jacking up the price and selling their stock through this rumor of being bought.

I wonder who lost money when palm separated from 3-com? Who lost money when they spun off Palm Source? I think access lost money buying Palm Source, but basically a lot of people who want another handheld may be really disappointed.

I hope is not the last breath for Palm and us, the users. Seeing Google or even Yahoo with tons of easy made money will pay alot for it....

Well, i am going to switch 100% to MAC, iPhone anyway... ;-)

OMG just thought about this...

How about if its Microsoft?? Palm and Microsoft have been close. I mean Palm can even do things other ODMs can't. This would be very interesting.

Yes but why Microsoft would be interested in Palm?
On one hand, it's true that lately they are interested in hardware too (Zune, Xbox...) so perhaps it would fill a gap into their divisions and for once with something that is selling well everywhere and could give them back some money :)
Moreover Palm has money in cash, it could be interesting ;)
It could be too to counter the Iphone...

Yet if Microsoft was buying Palm Inc, in this peculiar case, why would they continue to use Palm OS? I mean, they could kill two birds with a stone here, one try to counter Apple with some good looking / good mobile, two Palm OS so Windows Mobile could try to compete with other remaining OS on the market (Symbian and so on)...


Yet it could be just a rumour, but it seems it's effective on the Nasdaq (http://www.quote.com/qc/stocks/charts.aspx?symbols=NASDAQ:PALM) ;)

Anyway I don't see why you hire Morgan Stanley to do just a barbecue, there should be a reason ;) and it would seem it could be more like Nokia or Motorola or something like this :)

I would love to see anybody buy Palm. Something needs to happen, else at some point nobody will want them. I think we are very close to that point now.

Just with thinking of Sony buying palm made me think in soooooo many options of compability with the PS3 and/or PSP, i'd love that, but sony has been making a lot of mistakes lately (With the PS3 specially), and if they have ever planed of buying Palm, probabilities of them buying Palm are low ( :( ).

Well, whoever buys Palm, hope they don't kill it, cuz i really want a "TX2", or at least a new PDA with Palm OS, and i don't want a Treo . :mad:

Heh it would be but let us hope what ever the heck happens Palm OS II comes out on a brand spanking new TX 2!!!!

uhmmmmm, i read somewhere that MOTO might buy Palm....
say goodbye to Palm.. whatever MOTO touches is turns to NADA..
I just never trusted MOTO....

Assuming that the buy out will happen, the next question is.. will they allow PALM Inc. to become a standalone company under the "BUYER'S" company name or will they totally merge it to their name and see the extinction of the PALM company.

I think Colligan and Hawkins would be indignant about destroying the Palm name and vision in any sale...

My two cents...I hope Palm is taken private by equity investors. This would be very positive for Palm. First, the company can keep its name and identity. Second, the company can focus more on development of new products rather than being distracted by analyst estimates. Third, private equity groups have a knack for turning around a company and making it stronger. Of course, after the turnaround, they would want to take Palm public again and cash out - in a few years. At that time, Palm may be a stronger player in the portable handset market.
