All of the MS Pros seem to have the MagicGate feature. Can anyone tell me how this will impact me?
Thanks.

Not exactly sure - but there are basically two types.
White (usually) -- Majic Gate - is Sony's "Media" stick - songs, etc
Purple (usually) -- MS - is Sony's (or any one else's) "Media" stick - songs, etc.
No real differnce in the long run since you will probably use them for storage of data (more often) than storage of Music.
Also, the Purple ones (non Majic Gate) seem to cost less.

MG sticks support ATRAC3. Whilst it is technically possible to store ATRAC3 files on a MS and bypass the security - why?
ATRAC3 has that annoying tag system to aviod piracy
MP3 is identical in quality etc
If you put ATRAC3 on a MS any Sony device will not read it.
So why? basically unless you have ATRAC3 files, get a MS/MSPro. You will not see any difference between MG and MS.

See - know I know why ;.)
So, as a rule of thumb, you could say, "Avoid ATRAC3" and you will be OK with whatever is the cheapest - on that day you buy it.

You can NOT use the MS Pro for ATRAC3 on the NX or NZ Clies! ! !
Sony says so!
ATRAC3 support is only for certain other devices.

Thanks for all the help guys. Let me make sure I'm clear. I don't have any ATRAC3 files and probably never will. I deliberate ly never bought a MG stick before. But now I want an MSPro and they are all MG. If I by an MSPro (which has MG technology) will it interfere in any way with me listening to my current MP3s?
Thanks again.

Well MS Pro might be MG, but as stated before, that doesn't work in the NX. Besides, you can put MP3's on all memory sticks (Blue, MG, MS Pro) and play them without problem.
To be complete, the MG sticks only offer the extra capability of allowing you to use ATRAC3. It is not crippled in any way.

Hmmmm - i didnt know that all MSPro sticks were MG. Wow.
BTW - NX60/70 will work with MSPro once you get the upgrade for it. I can not remember where it is now, but it is about 300KB in size.
Good luck.

The Update to use the MSPro Stick is on Sony's Support Page where they have the software updates.

Am I crazy or are there no MS Pros on the sonystyle website? I was looking earlier today and couldn't find a thing...not even under the MG tab. Anyone know where to find them on the website?

go to
http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/clie/index.html
and click your model then updated software and drivers near the top.
Oh and yes I probably would, although I won't admit it and you can't make me. :D

Okay, the sales child at CC said ALL Memstick pros are MagicGate. Is that true? Does anybody know? They only had the weird looking clear/whitish one there.

They are all magic gate, but all that means is that you can play ATRAC recordings if you want. If you don't have any ATRAC recordings, it doesn't affect you in the slightest.

As stated before, all MS Pros are indeed MagicGate. However on the current Clie's ATRAC recordings do not work on the MS Pro's. So they are bascially equivalent to the standard sticks. A lot faster and a lot bigger though.

Thank your Patrick that "(ATRAC recordings do not work on the MS Pro's)" was my experience too and I thought that I was going crazy because I wanted to use ms pro to listen to music. I want to ask a really obvious question that I can't seem to find an answerrr to. How do you get MP3's on an y stick I have many choices mspro, ms (purple and white) and a CF. I just don't know what program to use to transfer them via my (4in1) reader or ms import. I tried mindows media player and sonic stage am I miswsing something if so what is the program and th settings? Francis
clearly stated, patrickl! :D
MS Pro don't support ATRAC3, but is also part of the MagicGate. What it does actually is just put an ID Tag on your stick when you 1st use your MS Pro with your Clie model, then it's supposed to have data encription & enhanced security. But all it comes down to is just slightly faster data access & bigger storage really.

I use MS Import on the Clie. Put the Clie in the cradle. Start MS Import and the Memory Stick will appear as a drive in Windows Explorer.
I put the MP3 files in the directory /PALM/Programs/MSAUDIO on the stick.
To be honest I don't do this very often so maybe there is an easier way. For instance, maybe an install via HotSync might work.
I don't create the MP3's myself. But I think you could do that with Media Player. I used WinAmp myself.

Hotsyncing would be slower, and I don't think it would put the files in the right place. Absent a card reader, MSImport is the way to go

I thought the whole point of the Magic Gate thing was to be able to use ATRAC recordings... I don't have any, so I've never tried, but is it supposed to be incompatible?
