It may be SPELLED C-L-I-E but the correct pronunciation is...
"SHAR-DAY"
ash =o) <---------------smooth operator
PS "coast to coast, LA to...Chicago..." HUH?? If she thinks CHicago is on the coast then ANYONE is going to be a smooth operator to her!

I call it "Bob" - easy, simple and my wife knows what I talking about
;.)
It is depended upon the apostrophe. So u must say Cli- é because the sign above the e tells you to speak it like an e. It comes from the french and is called "accent d'aigue"

I agree with nx70 - but I think i'll keep calling mine "Bob"
Why a man?? Isn't a female better?
Or is this a technical-no-woman-copes-with-technic-think???
;)
I was thinking of calling mine Long John Silver.

I once called my origional Palm (64KB Ram) - Amy - but my wife got jealous - I guess because she found out about a previous girlfriend - who happened to be Amy - who happened to give me the Palm - in who's name I happened to name it.
So, to play it safe, when I got my IIIC, I called it "Bob" - after my black fat lazy cat that seems to occupy all my time - just like my clie does.
She was happy with the name change - and we lived happily ever after,.....
whoops! that's pretty funny Long John Silver is cool.
Poor Amy or better said poor Bob. I think a gender change isn't that fine..
the problem is not how to pronounce Clie correctly, it is how your friends and family calls YOU!
Ever since I have the NZ the call ME Mr. Gadget with his toy!
And hey, I do have a name too ;)
cheers Nicolas

If you have an NZ you call it Porky. :D
Well, I have the same prob as well. Not that I am shy. But I feel a little bit ashamed, when I pull it out, for it seems I won't to boast with it. On the other hand I feel with all the poor worms not having an PDA... They do not know what they miss.

Being a former Sony Technician and working cloe to the Clie techs I can tell you without a doubt it is Cleeee Ayy

Ok, so a tiny French lesson: In French, there's é and è.
è is pretty close to an A, like in hat (not eactly, but close)
é, on the other hand is a bit harder, as there's no similar letter (in German it's easy, it's just like a double E). But in English... it's something between men and mean.
OK, I admit it. I know how it sounds, but I can't explain it. Sorry. But it's definately NOT Clee-Ay. It's close, but not close enough.

That's dangerous, you gotta be careful.
It happened to me a while ago. all my username on credit card was my ex's name. That was nightmare when I had to erase and update all the information.

I think that sony would like us to say CLEE AY but eveyone says CLEEE.
Why dont they just let it go?? Ref:Steve Jobs and Mac OS X 10.2 -> Jaguar is pronounced Jagwire :)
As a french, I think I know how to pronounce it...
Here we go:
CLIé:
CLI = like in [CLI]ff
é = like in d[E]dicated
If you really want to know how to say it... I can post a mp3 with my own voice on it... :)
See you

This was in a FAQ somewhere on sony a couple years ago when they first came out. I managed to find this old article
that quotes sony on the matter.

Technically, I do say CLEE-AY. However, i think i might say CLEE or thingamajig from now on 'cuz CLEE-AY sounds too fancy, or 'upper class.' I think Sony should give it a regular cool name and leave it up to the consumer to decide what 'class' it should belong to. I feel a bit haughty saying that word.
Besides, I only have an SL10!

in responce to all the analysis....well...I call it Clee-ay. But I think I good way to portray how it should be pronounced (well, according to my NR70V friend in France) is Clee-eh. Hee...I just call it a TG50 and that's that!

This thread again?!!!! How many times are we gonna go through this one?!
http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=891&highlight=pronounce (Just ONE of the many threads on this subject.)
First, for those who went to the whole French crap, it's NOT French. Just because Sony decided to use the accent aigue doesn't mean you follow those rules. Being a product name, it's less about how it is spelled and more about how the manufacturer determines it should be pronounced. Just like with proper names, pronunciation rules go out the window. BUT, if you want to follow French pronunciation, wouldn't it be similar to café? That would make it klee-ay right?
Secondly, it's an acronym for 'Communication Link Information Entertainment.'
Lastly, Baker1369 was right on when he mentioned the demo clearly says Clee-ay (like my T615C used to before it was stolen.)
So, say it how you like, but I will say it the way Sony intended. :p

(I think I just posted this to another thread about pronunciation, but...) First of all, this is a totally made-up word, so the only "right" way to pronounce is they way Sony wants you to pronounce it. And that is CLEE-AY.
In Japanese it is spelled out phonetically ("ku-ri-e") when when put back into English is CLEE-AY. There's really no room for discussion.
Geckotek
04-27-2003, 09:30 PM
Well, the only room for discussion is that the post didn't ask what the proper pronunciation is, it asked how do 'YOU' pronounce it.

Yeah, my original post was a little more terse until I read the original post again. I had to edit it and add the ending regarding the "say it how you like" part. :D

Oh, and if you want to know how the é is pronounced, check here:

While it is not quite an 'ay' sound, it is close.

That accent does not make the "e" sound like "ee"...it makes it sound like "ay". The accent with 2 dots ontop of it (ë) makes it sound like "ee"

At first I guess I kinda fixated on the "i" in Clie. I just got comfortable with CLY EH. Then, after my other post, I embraced stevejohnson460's version of: CLEEEE AY, Latin for Clan Chief and Top Dog. Hey, if it's Latin, it's gotta be good....

CLEE-AY
my unit has the accent acute (French).
Clié
Because I'm Canadian and I was taught the é makes a "-ay" sound, I therefore pronounce it "CLEE-AY"

I pronounce the name as CLEE-YAY, but my nickname for my Clie is Laserbeak after the Decepticon Transformer. The reason why I call it Laserbeak is I use my Clie to take quick photos and videos of people and items. Actually, all of my home systems are named after Transformers. I even have an Autobot emblem on my truck.
Does all of that make me a true computer geek?

Yup! I think Clee-Ay is too 'fancy' and a pain to say- and Cli-Ehh is going way too far. I prefer to stick to American pronunciation. Besides, concerning France's attitude towards toward the U.S. recently among other international relations issues, I'm not too inclined to brush up my [nonexistent] knowledge of French. I'd like to say Clee, but usually just say 'PDA.'
