Hi guys,

I'm going insane. I bought a new Memory Stick from Lexar today and just wanted to put it into my Clie 665C. But it just doesn't seem to recognize it. I tried to format it with several different programs (McFile, MS Gate etc) but they all either aborted or said that the stick wasn't put in properly. But that wasn't the case. The write protection was not enabled. I than tried access it with my MS reader for my PC - no luck. Even windows told me that the format process could not be finished. Please don't tell me that the stick is broken. Is there any other possibility for those problems I'm running into??

My old MS from Sony works perfectly.

sounds like your memory stick is dead, but on the brightside, Lexar has a 5 year warranty on their memory sticks so you should be able to get a replacement

I have a lexair also and I sometimes have to hold it in until the light goes off then you can let go and let it clip into place then all is normal and works fine.

How about reformatting it using the built in Card Info program.

Some NR70 Clies also had issues with the Memory Stick Slot. Sometimes I have to push and hold on the back of the Clie while inserting a genuine Sony stick.

I had nothing but problems with the cheapy Lexar MSs. Bought once from Dell. Sticked it into my Clie, nothing happened. Got no help from Lexar. Returned it to Dell, which sent me another one. Found the second one DOA too. Returned it for a full refund. Bought Sony and SanDisk MSs since. They work great. I now have 5 of 128 MB MSs (2 Sony's, 3 SanDisk's). The latest on is SanDisk from Amazon for $27. :D

From what I heard, Lexar produces MS for Sony. The new MSPro will be from Sandisk, I believe.

Both MS from Sony and Lexar should have similar design and gone through similar manufacturing process, except maybe for the version from Lexar's with the LED indicator. So statistically, both should have more of less similar defective rates.

When you buy a Sony, you pay a premium for (1) a FANTASTICAL blue-colored casing and (2) a BEOOOTIFUL silk-screened "Sony" logo, which probably cost an extra... oh I don't know... 5 cents to produce from Lexar's ;).

I have had two 'bad' Lexar Memory Sticks (and, so far, no bad SansDisk). In both cases, I got no satisfaction from e-mail or phone calls.

However, in both cases, I just mailed the stick in to the address on the website (www.lexarmedia.com) with a brief letter and got pretty prompt replacements!

So, the score is:
5 (out of 10) for stick quality (half of my Lexars have failed)
0/10 for phone or email support
8/10 for mail-in support (they do e-mail with shipping info, but they don't ship fast or reimburse for costs, a whopping $1 or so! (grin))
3/10 for rebate satisfaction- I have had more Lexar rebates denied than any other rebates I have ever tried for.

Overall satisfaction: Eh. I get them when they are cheap, and the instant they act up, I send them in. Given a choice, I go with SansDisk.

I'm wondering about the Lexar's quality control and product handling reliability. Why are there so many complaints about Lexar products?

It may license the process of making MS from Sony, however, does it also supply the product to Sony? I bought Sony MS in which the package said: "Made in Japan", while the ones from Lexar said: "Made in Singapore".

Now, in terms of product handling, the lexar packaging is poor. It is just a sheet plastic pressed into a MS shape and cover it with paper. The MS is more likely to get damage from handling. When I first get a big box full of styrofoam nuts from Dell, I thought Dell forgot to send me the MS, until I dumped the nuts to the trash and found this piece of plastic sheet with MS stuck in it.

I've got 2 x 128MB Lexar Sticks (Clear Purple with the access light) and have never had a problem with them. Sounds like you have a bad stick - If your PC based reader can't read / write / recognize it, I'd return it!

You might be thinking of SanDisk. SanDisk has partnered with Sony with Memory Sticks since the 9/00 announement they were going to help design the MS Pro and would have rights to manufacture them. Part of that agreement was they would supply the flash memory for the current MS and Sony would build memory sticks that SanDisk would rebrand as their own.

I have 4 Lexar sticks, all 128 mb, and I use them both (back and forth) between my NX60 and my sony P5 camera - they work great, and I have yet to have a problem. But, I always back up the information on all of my memory sticks on my computer - I never know when disaster might strike.

Wow, you know, the one memory stick I have from Sony looks VERY similar to my Lexar sticks ( and the Lexar sticks are cheap, heck buy.com - I just bought 2 sticks for $55 each (128 mb), and with a $20 rebate for each, you figure my final cost......

I guess you missed the 128 MB SanDisk MS for $27 with free shipping deal about a month ago offered by Amazon .com.  Just be on the lookout for the next deal.

Theres also a new buy.com only $15 dollar rebate for the lexar memory stick that you may be able to use as well. It's valid from 1/1/03 til 3/31/03. It goes to a different department than the $20 one and both rebates allow you to send a copy of the upc. So if you can get both rebates to go through it'll be $55-20-15= $20 for a 128mb stick.

I had purchased 2 Lexar 128Mb MS with the light, and have had no problems - these sticks came with 5 year warranties. I just purchased one of the regular non-light Lexar 128Mb MS from Amazon, and it came with a 90-Day Limited Warranty.

I thought all Lexar MS had the 5 year warranties? Has this always been the case, the different warranties?
