This week I cover the news from the 3GSM World Congress conference, this week's 1SRC Editorial, and Steven Tyler sends us an audio postcard. [details (http://www.1src.com/?m=show&id=1823)]

Personally, I like the SD card sound. Its something thats distinctly Palm (and not just treo)

Me too. That's why I'm going to keep it. And the SD card sound was also available on the Clie also. The only difference is that the Clie, at least the on I have, used Sony Memory Sticks an compact flash cards.

Alan, I think you've got it right: if ALP indeed doesn't support 320x320, then we probably won't see ALP in a Palm device, or even a US device period. In a way, Palm seems to have won the screen resolution battle. For a while, everyone talked about the more "standard" Windows Mobile 320x240 and 640x480 screen sizes. But now, suddenly, Windows Mobile 6's support for 320x320 screens! Plus, did anyone catch the screen resolution on the Apple iPhone? It's a 320x480 screen, just like Palm's PDAs! Now that WinMob and iPhone both will be using the same screen res as Palm OS, I don't see Palm switching anytime soon.

I need to do some more reading on Windows Mobile 6.0 over the weekend. It would seem that companies are switching to 320x320 for the "standard" square size screen. I think that 320x480 makes a good tablet size screen. That is really one thing that I do like about my TX over my Treo 700p.
ALP and MW 6 are suppose to support higher screen resolutions, but I'm not sure what they are.

I find it strange that ALP doesn't support 320x320. Wasn't it originally being designed with Palm in mind? I guess we have to wait till official specs come out (and yes, so far I haven't seen a single mention of 320x320)

Also, judging from the screen shots it looks like ALP is skinnable. In some shots the interface is blackish with colored icons, while in others there is a bluish theme for both icons and backgrounds.
Also, if anyone wants to see it in action, click here:

The original Palm OS Linux software, prior to the ACCESS buy out of PalmSource was notionally intended to be used in devices like the Treo. ACCESS on the other hand, is positioning ALP so it can be used as an embedded operating system in smartphones, PDA, TVs, TiVo-like devices, all the way up to household appliances and home network servers.

I don't have a recording of the really rapid clicking sound (as I only heard it once when a beta app I was testing wouldn't launch) but I think you should try to track it down and use it before any rant. ;)

That is going to be hard. I do get the sound on my TX and T5, but I can't reproduce it at will. I'll have to connect my Palm to the Mac and then play with it for a while and see if I can sample it.

And what terrible thing are you doing to your TX/T5 to make this noise?
Alan G

It seems to be totally random. I really don't pay it much mind. AddIt, Media, and VersaMail come to mind as being the main apps that I use on those devices.

Another vote for the SD card sound. Going with the default Treo ringtone will drive me nuts!

How about holding the 5 way nav down while 1src page is loading on blazer? :D

Don't worry. I'll be sticking with the SD card sound.

Use the Hotsync sound, the original one. I've always thought of that as distintly Palm. I mean my first Treo had it and my CLIE had it. My TX had a variant which I don't like. Get a Palm OS 5.2 or older device and hotsync it. That's the sound you should use.
It would make Steven Tyler happy and I think people would also like it.
BTW, that audio postdcard's contents were really unexpected. LOL. Redmond lobbying, strippers, Kirvin??

Alan !
NEVER do that Treo ring tune again in your podcast ! I was listening to the podcast using my 680 while working outside in the garden and was thinking someone was trying to call me  :D
Phone on/off sound I can live with :D
(Sorry Steve )
ALP not supporting 320x320, WM adding support with version 6 ... hmmm ... I truly hope Palm has something in their sleeve on that Linux path to provide an alternative.
Not that I am not happy with Garnet as it is now, but for future products and to keep ahead with competition they should have a linux-based alternative.
Good thing they can really make a generic platform now. Just hope the price difference is going to show in the shop ;)

You use Addit ? What for ?

I didn't think you guys would get so passionate about this...LOL! OK, I won't use the ringtone.

I find AddIt to be a fast way to download Reuters news without having to use Blazer. And I don't have to deal with scrolling past side nav bars. I also use GetSportz, also by Bluefish Wireless. (Did I mention that I don't have to use Blazer?)

LMAO!! I suggest you use the Hotsync sound. I mean the only thing people would think is that their device is hotsyncing if they are at their PC. But being it the older hotsync sound, it would be different. Unless, the person is using a CLIE or older non-Garnet Palm device.

I 2nd the vote for the Hotsync sound! (Really reminds me of the first Palm I saw in action: the Visor)
