hi i have an nx70, although it does now play xvid/ divx video at 23fps after over clocking to 266mhz this is extremely power hungry even after buying a new battery. the battery dropped from 100% to 63% after around 50 mins of playback and it still drops a few frames. Is there any other clie with decent battery life that can support 30fps divx/xvid video playback without overclocking using tcmp?

The TH55 should, or if you don't mind the price, the VZ90.

is that without overclocking? how long do these machines last playing video?

THE VZ 90 WILL NEVER PLAY FULL NATIVE 480x320 VIDEOS AT 24, 25 or 30 FPS. It will be limited to smaller vids and so upscale it to allow a full screen rendering, making the video somewhat blurred.

With NX70, if you don't put the brightness too far, you should be able to play 2h or 2h30 of full 480x320 vids. If it is too short, you can ue a power charger, to recharge your battery on the go, or buy a Palm TX (awfull screen in comparison with clies, but longer battery life in video).

Umm... I did.... ???

I tried everything, every encoding method, under Windows or Mac OS, and every player on the clie. This machine has simply not enough power with the 123 MHz CPU to decode such a video data stream without loosing frames and so getting a skippy movie. You can have full screen movie, using the clie upscaller, but not play video encoded in full screen resolution. I followed all the tutorials and all the threads i found about it, even on 1rst source.

Well, this is what i finally understood for my biggest disappointment.

Dear Drangonsgame, can you prove me i am wrong ? I would be happy to finally be able to get smooth full resolution 480x320 videos at full framerate, withous skipping frames and screen tearing ... but it seems it's just impossible.

What is your bitrate are you using?

Something's gotta give.
Battery life, pixel resolution, frame rate or file format flexibility (eg: divx/xvid preexisting videos)
ie. you can't have the best of them all (at least not at the same time ;-)

Several notes:
480x320 x 30fps is almost 5 mega-pixels per second the PDA. The sweet spot for the CLIE line is 320x240 pixels (at 15fps or 30fps) scaled up. That's half as many pixels as true full screen.
More important is the bitrate of the video. The builtin codecs have a max of 768kbps data rate. The regular speed devices (ie. no overclocking on the NX) should be able to handle this easy with zero skipping. If not, check the speed of your media card (more recently manufactured MS PRo sticks tend to be more than fast enough)

A 480x320 @30fps video will look poor at this bitrate (so somethings got to give, lower the size or the frame rate; raising the bitrate is not an option). For anime, a 15 or 20 fps is adequate. For regular movies, consider the 320x240 @ 30fps option (built into Image Converter)

Then there is the issue of file format. If you are looking for maximum capabilities and maximum battery life, you should encode the video specifically for the CLIE. That's what Image Converter does (1.5 or 2.0 depending on model and other issues). It gives you a CLIE optimized MP4 file video. It also can be played by the builtin player (and/or FullMoviePlayer). This gives better battery life too (because of device specific optimizations)

Or put another way, if you are picking up random divx/xvid movies and try playing them on a PDA, the results (and battery life) will not be optimal.

I personnaly have very good looking 480x320 videos at 24 or 30 fps on my nx80v, at a bitrate about 500 kbps in MPG4 for video and MPG1 layer 3 for audio (MP3) I just need to overclock th NX to 266 to get perfectly smooth play.

VZ is not able to play this kind of video. The CPU (HHE 123MHz) Doesn't deliver enough power. Unfortunately, it's not possible to overcock ennough the HHE. What a pity.
