I like Bahsoft's Bankbook4 (http://www.bahsoftware.com). I've been using it for two years or so. You can set up multiple accounts. I think it costs about $20.

You can't get cheaper than MyCheckbook:

I don't know if counts as basic though, but it works well.

However, if you use Quicken on your desktop, PocketQuicken is the way to go.

I used to use a free app called PilotMoney. But after discovering SplashMoney, it's well worth the price.

I also use Splashmoney and the developers are really quick to answer questions. I even called them one time for an irritating bug - and they walked me - through the phone - on how to get it fixed.
That alone is worth the price.

Another vote for SplashMoney. Easy to use...looks good...memorizes prvious entries so I don't have to write as much...
I only wish that it would hotsynch seamlessly with Money 2003 the way that Ultrasoft Money does...

I used bahsoft's BankBook for over 2 years. I just started using SplashMoney and find that it works just as well as Bankbook with several more features not found in Bankbook. Not to mention seamless syncing with Quicken.
It is well worth the cost. One bounced check fee avoided, pays for the program all by itself.
:D
Well, I hesitated to post since I'm the developer, but MoneyTender Enhanced is available. I don't advertise a 5.0 version yet, but if someone wanted to demo it I'd send out a current version that does work on 5.0.

Hey Sean,
It's cool to see you're on these boards. I used moneytender back when I actually had time to budget my money on the palm. It was quite useful back then. Good work!

I have one MASSIVE complaint about MYCHECKBOOK:
It came with a dialer program called SEX attached to the .exe file. I think that automatically disqualifies a program from consideration in the "best freeware" category, no?
SEX (for detailed write-up) (http://research.pestpatrol.com/FileInfo/FileInfo.asp?PVT=1520604458&Submit=Find+this+PVT)
Caveat Emptor! Buyer beware. TANSTAAFL. You get what you pay for.

I use Splash Money and sync it to Quicken. I purchased the whole suite a while back as Splash Wallet as a special. Fine products, no complaints :)!

Really? It syncs seamlessly with Quicken?? If this is true, it might be worth going back to Quicken...
So, for example, could you enter transactions on either the desktop (Quicken) OR the Clie (SplashMoney), and on the next hotsynch, everything would just sync with no additional fiddling??
