In the zip file that you download for FastCPU, there are several different versions of FastCPU...some for color, some for b/w, hires etc.

The manual says:
FastCPU_ Color_HR_SZ.prc
For color device (320x320, 16 Bits): Sony Clie` PEG-T650/665/675, NR-70/70V, ...

So I installed this file onto my SJ-30 and I got the following message:
"You should install FastCPU_Color_HR.prc for this handheld."

According to the manual that file is for 8bit color screens:
FastCPU_ Color_HR.prc
For color device (320x320, 8 Bits): Sony Clie` PEG-N760, N610, T615, T625, ...

What am I doing wrong? Why won't the _HR_SZ for 16bit color screen vesion work on the SJ30?

I don't think you're doing anything wrong. If I recall, I had the same experience with my SJ30 and just installed the other file. It looks and runs great.

Yeah weird though that the SZ file doesn't work on the SJ30, after all the SJ30 does have 16bit color.

possibly the chip that handles the screen write is different on the SJ30 than the T665 or... remember the Palm 130? Palm had to eat it on that one. Could Sony have? nawwww could never happen ;)

No, I don't remember the Palm 130, I've heard of m130, but that device has been successful at least as far as those who own it.

seeing as they only make one model with the numerals 130 in their name I figured the "M" was not needed geeeezz Well palm advertised it as 65K colours (K is for thousand) and it turns out it was not true 16 bit colour but was more like 12 bit and there were far less than 65K colours. Other than that yes it is an OK small screen, 8meg, odd shaped, low resolution, non jog wheel equipped device mostly owned by people who now wish they had bought an SJ30.
