Hi jiminet, welcome to 1src!
I've experienced problems like that using COMA before, too. Instead of going through COMA, see if it helps by just going to Setting->Prefs->Network and selecting Wireless LAN, Details..., Scan. It's a little more cumbersome this way, but I've never had problems finding a wifi signal (assuming there is one, of course. . .)
jiminet, yes welcome to 1src from me too.
Just to let you know that I have no trouble going through CoMa per your method.
Some people did have bad WiFi radio. I had to replace their motherboards. However, I can't do it for TH55/E1s as they are hard to get and very expensive.

Yes - I did. I had two TH55's replaced under warranty for this problem in the first year (both E1 models). If I remember correctly, the symptoms were attempting to use Wi-Fi caused the device to freeze with the Bluetooth light on.
It may be worth trying Sony in Europe to see if they do a fixed price repair here.
