WD6CWR here - living in Atyrau, Kazakhstan right now, so the hammin' is on hold for a few years. NX serves me well on those noisy flights to the oilfields when you have to wear ear protectors - I just stick the earbuds under the headphones and listen to music during the flight. When I get there, I just change the MS to the one with all my business docs on it, and I'm ready to go to work.
Also been taking lots of videos and movies of our adventure over here, which go up on my web site as a web log.

K4UNX here, fomerly KC6ZOL which I got in California, K4UNX I picked up in Virginia when I was there and noticed my friend got W6VMS, had to counter his W6VMS with K4UNX (VMS operating system, UNIX operating system). So I sorta call myself "Kill 4 UNIX". ;-P

N9ONL, in Illinois!
Packet Radio is what got me into Amteur Radio. I never was a "talker", but loved to type messages and "surf" packet nodes around the world. Biggest thrill was first logging into a packet node in Hawaii using the Chicago to California "wormhole" at 1200 baud. I ran a local Packet BBS for a while...and then the Internet reared its head... ;)
Sad to say most of my equipment is largely unused. :(

N9DIZ from East Moline, IL - Opposite side of the state, directly west of Chicago.
I've had my ticket since I was in junior high, but I've been mostly inactive lately. Kids, work, internet, keeping up with each new PDA released... you know the drill!

You should use your NX more, they're quite cool! When did they require licensing tho and how are they tracking it? Hope I don't get caught as an unlicensed NX owner... :-/

*Chuckle chuckle* ok ok, so I misplaced the commas, periods, inflection, etc. Let's try it this way: Licensed, but inactive (ham operator). NX user (everyday, all day) lol. Hope that clears the muddy waters for ya.. it's only 1:45AM here

Hey Guys, VA3WAH just north of Toronto... I have an NZ90... but I thought I'd check in anyway!... Anyone found any Ham Radio Related software for OS/5 or Hi-Rez yet?... Or just any really cool HR tools for the palm in general?...
73's...
Alan
There are a bunch of AR apps available. APRS, two or three logging apps, gray line, some band plans, and, I'm sure, a bunch of stuff I don't know about.
I've tried most of them, but I also haven't tried any that I know of on 5.0.

I wouldn't mind knowing all the software available for my Clie fro radio. Loggin, Ebooks, prop, etc.
Should we do it here or should I start another thread?
I'm thinkin' here.
Okay where you really need to look is:
http://www.qsl.net/va3pkh/palm-ham.html
That has a list of almost 100 AR apps for Palm.
I thought about trying to put the list here, but it's just too long. If you're interested in using your Clie for AR, and want to know what's available, that's the place to go.

KS1G (ex KA1LM), Herndon VA. Only a N760 here, lusting for a fanicer PDA, *or* a new rig, ... can't do either quite yet, oh well. Using PDAs since a Palm 5000 not long after US Robotics came out with them.
Favorite ham radio PDA app is PocketSat+ - satellite tracking. Great for portable satellite ops, and the "+" version tracks the high-orbit birds (AO-40), has color display, AND a hi-res display for you NX and NZ owners running OS 5.x.
What do you folks do about the USB port and lack of a serial port on the older PDAs? Get a conversion cable like the ones I think are available to connect external GPS receivers to a Clie?

"73" is old telegraphers' code for "best regards" — still used by hams and other radio enthusiasts.
Here's the "What is Amateur ("Ham") Radio" text from my web site (http://www.arfunk.com):
Even in the computer age, Amateur "Ham" Radio is an exciting hobby and service.
"Hams" can talk around the world, use (our own!) satellites, send television pictures, do computer-to-computer communications over-the-air, and more.
Usually "hams" are having fun — competing against each other in on-air contests, trying to talk to as many different countries (or states, or US counties, or islands, etc.) as they can for various operating awards, building or modifying antennas and radios, making new friends all over the world, or just chatting with old friends. This is the "hobby" aspect of Amateur Radio.
But when disaster strikes — earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, wildfires, etc. — Radio Amateurs are quick to offer their expertise, experience, equipment, and, most of all, time to provide emergency communications when normal means of communications are inoperative, unavailable or overloaded. No matter what it takes, "hams" will find a way to get the message through. And this is all as volunteers, for it is in fact illegal to accept compensation for communications via Amateur Radio. (FCC rules in the USA, may differ in other jurisdictions.) This is the "service" aspect of Amateur Radio.
You can find a more in-depth, illustrated explanation of Amateur Radio on the
ARRL web site (http://www.arrl.org).

It's really easy to get a license. The Technician class exam is 35 questions, multiple choice. And there are study guides and practice exam generators on the 'net... especially HamQuick.com (http://www.hamquick.com/)
It may take from a couple of hours to a few weeks to study, but it's easy and well worthwhile!

KH6IFZ with an NZ
K0HAK from San Jose here. NX70V.
Are there any decent HAM apps for the Clie? I used one to study for my tests, but what I'd really like to see is a code practice app (I'm still working on my General ticket).
Things I'd like:
A nice bandplan app
A repeater directory/database
An app that has manuals for the Yaesu VX-5r and VX-7r...I'm always forgetting how to do something on one or both of them.
