hi gang!

i searched the FAQ and couldn't find anything about this. i just bought a UX50 off ebay. the seller said it was working fine. i can't seem to connect it to USB -- XP just says "a USB device has malfunctioned" and the Mac doesn't see a device on the Bus at all in system profiler.

i've got the UX40/UX50 install CD so i know i have the right driver (at least on Windows) if i try to update driver and point it to the .infs in the Sony Handheld folder, it just says the current driver (for my "Unknown Device") is more appropriate or whatever.

any ideas? is it possible to fix the USB port?

the guy sent it to me in a bubble pack envelope. i thought at first nothing had happened, but now that i got the desktop software and tried to sync it, this is a problem. :(

many thanks!

It sounds like the first step is to take the back off your UX and visually check the USB port...

ah, okay. i'll crack it open tonight and have a peek. i didn't know if this was something that could come loose from the board or ??? it's been years since i touched a soldering iron so this might be fun. :p

Check for loose connections before going for the soldering iron!

Also be very, very careful when removing the back cover as the speaker is mounted to the case and connected to the UX mainboard by some very fine wires which will need to be disconnected (they lift straight off the mainboard) before taking the case all the way off.

oh yeah, those wires are tiny -- i noticed it had no sound when it arrived, and when i went to change the battery one of the wires was broken.

not too tough to fix (pulling those little gold prongs out with pliers) but i must be getting old and my eyesight isn't as good as it used to be. :)
