Please advise question above.

The connection between the cable and the cargarette adapter seems to be a USB connection. Can that be connected to a USB port to charge the Clie?

TIA

I'm too lazy to do it now, but you should just go to sonystyle.com and compare the part numbers for the car charger for the SJ and T series. I think the cradles are the same so the chargers should be the same. If the part numbers for the charger are the same theoretically they should be interchangeable.

Well, probably but I would recommend against it. There is potential of your PDA being damaged.

My SJ originally came with the Charger cord and the USB cord as separate items. I got tired of carrying that (stupid) little adapter you needed from the charger to the computer. I knew darn well some day I would lose it...

..with that in mind, I went out to buy a separate USB cable. I picked up the Belkin Y-Sync cable. I only read as far as "For Sony Clie..." When I got home I noticed the rest of the sentence said "T SERIES HANDHELDS" Being the curious type, I checked to see if it would plug into the Clie... It did! Now I was Piqued! Being brave I plugged it into the computer, then slowly into the Clie with my face turned away slightly.... The LED came on! It also charges! Swiftly I went to the HotSync icon and tapped away! The familiar beeping! Yowza! Success!! Next day I took the cable to my computer at work which had no USB port. I loaded the Desktop and plugged it all in. I set the Hotsync options to Local Serial. I tapped the HotSync button and, Yowza, the familiar beep and then waited for quite a few minutes as the Clie dumped to the computer. The T-Series cable worked! The only downside was that Docs To Go was set to synchronize, but it synchronized to absolutely NOWHERE!! The docs were GONE from the Clie and NOWHERE to be found on the computer!! (heavy sigh) Had wait till I got home to sync there to regain the Docs.. Hmmm.. What's up wit dat??

At any rate, the Belkin Part number is F8Y1102. Anyway, I would give that charger a shot if I were you... Worse case scenario would be that we would be FORCED to upgrade! Then ya could always use the burned one for a Pocket Mirror?? :D

I called Belkin on the F8Y1100 and they confirmed that it works with the SJ series (I have an SJ-33). THE F8Y1100 is USB only. It works like a charm with my laptop.

The only caution I'd add is that the voltage for using a laptop's USB port is not adequate for some of the N? series.  I know the T615 and SJ33 both need only 5.2V, which works fine.  But someone had posted in a different thread (sometime in the last 3 months) that some of the high end clie's need a higher voltage, something like 7V, and you can't charge those Clie's with a USB port.  If you are unsure, just look at the listed voltage on the A/C adapter.

I suspect this is why Sony doesn't make a USB charger.  To avoid problems when some one mixes and matches chargers.

If you are refering (in the original post) to the Belkin charger that has the cigarette lighter to USB shaped plug adaptor and the cable that comes with it (USB on one end and T-Series connector on the other) then yes, it works just fine. I use it to charge my SJ-30 from my laptop all the time. Heck, I even use it to sync on my laptop. I seem to recall using the cigarette adaptor part to charge it just once, but it seemed to work fine. This was a while back though...

I use the same Belkin charge cord too (SJ-30). I use it only to snyc and charge from my laptop. Use the original cord at home. No problems with it and it's a heck of a lot easier to carry than the bulky cord charger that comes with it.

I have a T series USB charger/sync cable, as well as a T series car lighter charger.  Both work well with SJ units.  (I have an SJ20)

I have a T series cradle. I've used it on a SJ30 and my new SJ33. never had a problem with it. I bough the T version instead of the SJ version because it was like $10-$20 cheaper.

Are you sure about it being cheaper? Is it an aftermarket cradle?

The T-series cradle and the SJ series cradle are the same cradle and cost the same.

Unless you were comparing it to the SJ Series cradle with AC adapter then there would be a price difference.

sorry, I guess I should of been more clear. It was the cradle w/ ac adaptor. However, i bought it at a discount price, not retail. So for me, this one was the cheapest. Its model number PEGA-UC600

That should be the same cradle for the SJ and T series also.

I've heard horror stories about PDA's getting fried by mis-matching chargers. http://www.palminfocenter.com/graveyard.asp?dead=Y&ID=147 see the link for the whole story.

The chargers/cradle are listed as the same for both models so I don't see the problem.

That's a horror story (singular).  Using the wrong transformer (either voltage, or ac/dc mismatch) should be expected to fry your device.  Anyway, the T series charging/syncing accessories work well with the SJ series of devices - especially since there are few made exclusively for the SJ's.  I picked up my car charger, and my USB combo hotsync/charger, on eBay for around $6 each.  Both were T series units.
