I'm not very handy in the whole MP3 area but what I would like to know is this.............If it's possible to copy my music from my CD's onto my PC then convert them into MP3 format and then transfer them to my PC what is the simplest way to do this and what software programs would I need to accomplish this?

For recording mp3's

Don't use VBR or MP3 Pro

44.1 KHz sampling frequency

96kbps or higher bit rate

copy protect off

Thanks for the help everyone, today I'm purchasing another hard drive just to place my music on. I'm going to try some of the software samples you have mentioned but does anyone know of a particular program I can purchase at Best Buy, Circuit City or Comp USA that is a favorable one?

Why buy? There is plenty free stuff on the net that you can download. I don't even know if you buy an mp3 app in a store anymore.

The majority of legal MP3's on the web are low-quality samples of the original tracks. It's almost common knowledge, but definately worth mentioning that P2P (peer to peer) software, such as Kazaa is the largest, most easily accessable pool of digital media availible.

My STRONG consideration is that you copy your original purchased CD's to your HDisk, by either ripping/converting through an almost countless number of freeware rippers, or by using the "SONICSTAGE" program supplied with your NX.

If you do decide to go ahead with the peer to peer route, make sure to protect your PC from spyware. *how?* Different P2P programs offer different methods. Kazaa offers "Kazaa Lite", a supposedly free of spyware version.

As for Peer2peer, try Shareaza since it is known as one which has no reported spyware.

Has anyone successfully recorded MP3's with Sonic Stage?

I can play them, but don't remember if you can rip them and how much effort is necessary. For myself, I use Music Match, but I aslo have Winamp and the MP3 plugin for the Windows Media Player.

I've been exploring the program for a while now, and I can't find the option. The program is a bit WYSIWYG-ish for my taste, but gets to ATRAC3 job done. But as far as I've tried, I can't find an mp3 encoder/ripper function within the program.

I use Exact audio copy with lame together. Both freeware and very fast which gives me plenty of options or just a beginner interface, u choose. How can SonicStage record MP3s?? I have only ATRAC3 options! and the programm messes everything up. Mostly I have error messages when using it with Win2k...

I just upgraded from an NR70 to an NX60 and some of the tracks I had on the MS were unable to be played. It said something like the copyright message earlier in this thread.

Since all of the tracks were playable on the NR, it kind of surprised me. Is it true that VBRs are playable on the NR and not the NX?

This is a problem I had when I tried to install them right to a Memory Stick using a USB reader connected to my PC. The work around I found was to load them onto the Clie using the MSExport utility. No idea why this works, but it does.

As mentioned here there are a number of options - I would take this chance to test a few and see which one fits your needs. I tried a few before going for 1-2 - always have a contingency in case
