View Full Version : Any ideas to cover hole?

don't know about anyone else, but I'm kinda worried about dirt and crap getting down inside the compact flash slot. The compact flash card I have only takes up about 2/3 of the thickness of the slot, leaving a nice hole for crap to get in.
Any great ideas (aside from duct tape/hot glue) to protect the CF slot? Preferably something that removes/reattaches easily.

I was thinking about trimming the plastic piece that used to cover it with my dremel tool. Anyone know if this part is available for order and how much? Keeping the NX in my pocket makes dust and lint creep into my NX in the weirdest places..

Keep it stored in a plastic sandwhich bag.

scotch tape a piece of plastic(or your preferred material) to the front of the CF maybe?
Playdoh! And you can pick a pretty color too:)

I know it's a bit out of the way(ish), but if your NX is constantly in danger of dirt/crap, would you consider a case?

Doesn't sound like good planning on Sony's part or does the wireless card not leave a gap?

Even if junk gets in there, the connections are covered by the card you have inserted. I just give mine a easy puff of air every now and then. The connectors are never exposed to anything, so I am not worried.

Hmmm..dremel the original cover eh? I wonder if I could get that to look good and stay put. Would like to keep the thing looking someone professional (that kinda outs the scotch tape and playdough ideas...good thinking though!).
About a case...the only way I could justify the large size of the NX (coming from Palm V, and I keep my PDA in my pocket) is the fact that it didn't need a case cause the screen was inside when stored.
Oh well...maybe I need to look for some nice magnesium looking playdough...
LOL... my turn to run away screaming.... :D

There is a contratcor's caulk called PhenoSeal. Get it any hardware store[No NOT THAT kind of hardware!] Comes in black and some other tones. It dries semi-flexible. A simple bead of it across the back of the card at the height of the card ought to give a seal similar to a full CF card in the slot.

Oh, yeah....also comes in a fake aluminum/silver, Slider.

That's because the slot is a Type II which is physically fatter than a Type I Compact Flash card. Now a Microdrive may fill up the slot.
yet you don't recommend Microdrives due to power consumption & might short circuit, right Larry? you're just everywhere! :D

Yepper! I cause trouble everywhere :D!
Maybe that was a poor example, I just don't know if the Microdrive will overload the internal circuitry. If the Microdrive needs 5.0 volts to operate, the Clie has at best maybe 4.2 volts. The Micodrive can draw as much power as the whole Clie itself does when writing to the drive. I wouldn't want to recommend it to anyone and then find out that it damaged their Clie. I don't know where I could find published specs for the Clie, Sony probably keeps that a secret too.

Urk! All this talk of using Dremel tools to modify original equipment and using caulk or other chemical sealants makes my knees weak!
Dont do that!
I am a whitewater enthusiast, and as such, I have buckets of closed cell minifoam. This stuff is great because it is slightly compressible, and the default color is dark grey. You can use a knife and sandpaper to cut a little square just the right thickness to fill the slot. It's non-abrasive, so you won't devalue the Clie or the memory card. You can order closed cell minifoam online at outdoor shops such as www.noc.com or www.dagger.com
If that seems like too much work, I think you could use open cell foam. This would be the thin white stuff that is used sometimes in shipping. If you buy a new TV or VCR, there is a good chance this stuff is a pillowcase around your purchase.

Thanks for all the ideas people!
Once my 512MB card shows up I'm going to have to try some of these ideas.

I just used a piece of neophrene (from an old mouse pad), and hobby knife to cut it to fit.
Because it compresses, it gives a nice fit.
Oh, and it's black, so it looks like part of the compact flash card, well sort of :)
You might try sticking several layers of black electrical tape on the card itself where the gap is. Cut the tape into even strips and carefully stick them on the card in such a way that when you insert the card the tape is flush with the top of the slot. It would seem to me that this would block the opening enough to prevent most crap from entering your slot.

I used a tiny piece of adhesive-tape-backed foam insulation... it is about twice as thick as the gap I am trying to fill, but it compressed down tightly and forms a pretty good seal! Not airtight, but should keep the crumbs and weevils out. :D
Oh yeah, the foam insulation is the exact same color as my gunmetal grey NX-70 V/UH!
