Hi:
Can someone point me to a document that describes in some detail how to rip a movie from a DVD, properly format it, and then transfer it to a memory stick so that I can view the movie in my ux50?
I have an assortment of sw that I use to duplicate my own dvds, such as dvd decrypter, virtual dub, dvdshrink, Nero 7. I know a little about doing this but not sure of the format for the mem stick for the UX50. Also, I see references to Image Converter 1.5 and 2.1, but dont know who produces that sw.
Thanks
J

You have to convert them to a mpeg file and then transfer that file with Image Converter 1.5, Takes too long IMO.
Image Converter is a SONY Program
Not sure where to find it anymore???

Here's one source to get image converter for free:
http://www.clieflics.com/component/option,com_docman/task,cat_view/gid,88888891/Itemid,32/
and they have several downloads for movies too.

As pointed out below you need to register, but it is free. You also need a program to unzip the files....
You can test out the movies using Quick time on the PC.

Actually, I use the procedure outlined in this thread for my TH55 and it works quite well:

Naturally, I use TCPMP for playback.

Except that that link doesn't let an unregistered user download anything, nor does it lead to any information on how to enable downloads.

I recommend using DVD Decrypter as briefly described in this post:
http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70005
under "DVD direct to MP4 (or MOV)"
No extra transcoding, relatively fast, great quality. Simply rip the DVD in VOB mode (separate by chapter), rename the files to .mpg, then drop onto Image Converter.
You can use the process with Image Converter 1.5 to create MQV (Quicktime MP4s) to play on the UX natively. If you install the MP4 codecs on the UX, you can use Image Converter 2.0 to create more standard MP4. I recommend that format because it is very standard (plays on iPod, PSP, PC, other PDAs), unlike the MQV. AFAIK: Image Converter 2.0/2.x is not available for free, but it is often pirated.

Image Converter 2.0 is allegedly available from here (http://www.memorystick.com/en/lifestyle/soft/index_video01.html). Blowed if I can get any of the links to work though!
My Japanese is non-existent, but this (http://www.mydown.com/driver/243/243174_ds.html) looks about right ;)

Thanks for the pointer...so after I used dvd decrypter, won't I have a lot of .vob chapter files? So how are they re-assembled into a continous movie?
Thanks

Yes. FWIW: I like/prefer it that way. One .VOB (and eventually one .MQV/.MP4) for each movie chapter. Keep them in order. That way you can easily advance to the next chapter. The existing players (including FullMoviePlayer usually advance automatically)
If you don't like it that way, play around with the DVDDecrypter options (Settings/IFO Mode/FileSplitting). You can split it many different ways. IIRC ImageConverter has problems if you make the VOBs too big (ie. trying to make one VOB per movie)

As CliePet points out, you can go into IFO Mode options in DVD Decrypter and ask it to rip selected chapters into a single .VOB.
I use Auto Gordian Knot (AGK) to make .avis and view them with TCPMP. AGK allows you to encode in DivX or Xvid. I think it's a really great program.

Where do you get the MP4 codecs?

I've followed a number of the links to get IC V 2.+ but they have all been dead ends, and I am not fond of using a Japanese version where I have to pattern match the commands to make it work. Anybody have a known good pointer to a copy?
TIA

Microsoft and Co. are planning things to favor zune and Media Center type video recordings to be played on handhelds One device Toshiba's Gigabeat will have only battery life to play one regular movie. Some of these devices are Tivo friendly and the other solutions that you may figure out to use for your Ux50 are only geek friendly.
Yes when pigs fly will it become dvd friendly to record all sorts of dvds to palm type devices....

I bought and use a program called Palm Media Studio. Works well and is very fast.
