iPhone = hype. Typing on a screen hurts after a while on the thumbs. Don't know if iPhone has landscape keyboard. We will have to see. I like the device connect sounds. They are a little loud for me though when I wear headphones. I like how you slipped them in there like you did the many other enhancements. Amazing how this cast has gone so far. Amazing job Alan. Truly great work.

Typing on screen might be way of the future if stuff like this comes out so get ready so Apple might be going the right way, now if they could scale the keyboard like in this demo it be great :) Oh and its very cool too ^.^

OMG!! I think Apple may have something here if thats exactly the same thing. It seems like it is. Hope the Hawk has this. Still have to see/use it before I can believe that it can be a successful product.

Good job as always Alan. :) Thanks!

Thank you. I'll try lowering the volume on the device in/out track next week.

I hope not. I much rather have real keys vs. virtual keys. There is no feedback when you're typing on the screen.

Great podcast, I like the Treo tone in the beginning. Nice to hear from Joel. I agree about real keys vs virtual, I much rather have real keys. Palm sent me a 750 for review and I can confirm that it fully supports HSDPA. Out of the box the Treo gets speeds of about 300kbit/sec, using the HSDPA hack I have gone as high as 960 kbit.sec, it's very fast. Palm and Cingular are going to release a software update, but it's already possible.

Thanks. The Treo tone is an SD card being inserted. There is a complementary SD card out tone at the end of the show. Now I know who listens to the entire show. LOL :)

I know what you mean, I like the physical feedback of a button clicking in when it's pressed, letting you know you've pressed it. I see in the demos on Apples website that the on-screen keyboard highlights the letter your pressing (visual feedback), but I can't see myself using it with much confidence.
As I've stated in the (one of the) threads about the iPhone, you can try out the virtual keyboard of the Nokia Interenet Tablets (http://www.internettablettalk.com/2006/05/16/the-new-full-screen-finger-keyboard/). It's disconcerting at first but I got used to it fast. I think iPhone will work for me... it's just kinda difficult for me to accept new tech... that's from someone who has grown up liking a stylus and a keyboard.

You and Alan are SO 20th C <G>. Actually, I expect by the time this went mainstream there will be very little key board imput and it will be mainly voice recognition. I can see the virture of software configurable keyboards for specalized applications such as games, vertical applications and even word processing (a lot of times its easier to format a doc with the mouse and keystrokes rather than voice.)

Thanks for your vote of confidence. ;)
But seriously, why do you think the Treo has physical keys? I mean, wouldn't Palm of all companies recognize the value of a touchscreen input? So why then did they opt to have a more standard phone with physical keys? Because they know, despite what we want to believe as technologists, and if your on this forum, your more than likely one, joe-shmoes (regular people) will NOT find a touchscreen easier to use on a phone. It's just not intuitive.
I tend to agree though, and I had kinda wished when I heard "it runs OSX" that the iPhone was going to have an included bluetooth headset and voice recognition. Then, and if it WORKED well, I just might, maybe, if hell freezes over and Steve Jobs head blows up, buy an iPhone. Probably still wouldn't. :p

@ Alan Wow.. it's #112 already! I listen to the show religiously and value your opinions / insights on everything palm. It is every palm fanatic's dream come true to have the opportunity each week to listen to a well produced palm powered podcast. Although to me there seems to be a drought of palm news, you always seem to bring in exciting topics. I'm looking forward to this weeks show!
@ LupeValenz Thanks for the link to the Multi-Touch Pressure Sensitive demo. If anyone hasn't watched it, I say its worth your time to take a peek. I'm quite excited about the future now.. nothing from ces / macworld got me this hyped. I never knew such technology existed.. I definitely want to see more of it. And if more manufacturers integrate it into their devices, 07 can possibly be the year of the touch screen - iphone and vista, 2 big upcoming products both supporting touch screen.
Jobs just might be right when he said your finger makes the perfect stylus. GUI will improve the users experience -- i lost my stylus many times and i had to go on weeks without one so I'm quite used to just living with fingers + 5 way nav. And I wish more applications are designed with large buttons -- palm hotsync is a good example.
For those of you skeptical of the whole touch screen keyboards:

I recently installed Mini-Keyboard from Animator-soft -- let me remind you that its one of those virtual thumb keyboards. I'm using it on my TX and I find that in landscape mode I can type efficiently. And after a couple of minutes, I was quite skilled. I used it for Verichat extensively today, and my fingers feel perfectly fine. It helps if you enable the system sound because you will get that ipod click-like sound each time you press a key. Now does anyone know how I can measure typing speed ?

@truffles - i agree, i've been using mini-keyboard on my T|X for *ages* now... really nice solution, especially in Landscape mode... The only minor niggle i've found is that it only works as insert-only with DocsToGo.
Oh yeah - AG: great podcast... been listen from here in (not so sunny) UK since around 80(ish)...I especially like the thought & research that you put into a podcast... it's not just your run-of-the-mill-reporting-what-other-people-say-podcast... *thank you*
btw - Diet Coke?! -- at the very least you should try Pepsi Max... or my choice: Pint of Guinness :-)

Thank you and you're welcome. Now, as for the unofficial official beverage of the 1SRC podcast, I'm OK with Coca-Cola products. I refused to drink Pepsi Jazz, I'm not sure Max would go over any better. Now, as my close friends will tell you, the pint of Guinness would be awesome, however, I'd have to do the show from a local pub. And I'm not sure I'd want to risk knocking my PowerBook off the end of the bar. LOL
