I really really really really want a backlight brighness program for my SJ20 so I can put it at 30% or something depending on light levels so my battery can last really long. SJ-series screen are really dim without ANY backlight, and very bright with it on FULL, but I want to have it in between. Freeware please, but oh well, if it's not we won't all die.

* BUMP *

I just got an SJ-20 (with a $30 rebate and a $40 Discover cashback bonus, couldn't resist) and love it, except the screen is way too bright for me! In dim light it's giving me a headache. Must... find... hack!

For anyone else who is bothered by this, you can actually use an old Palm "hack" that may make this more tolerable -- the "Invert Backlight" trick.

I just tried this on my SJ20, and it looks like it may have potential -- plus glowing white text on the high-contrast black bgnd looks pretty cool! Will have to try it in the dark to know for sure. Hope this helps anyone else.

Reverse Backlight Without A Hack
Tip provided by Nick Overstreet at PalmGear.com

For monochrome devices, there is a neat trick where you can reverse how the backlight is displayed.

In Memo Pad, hit NEW. Then draw a shortcut symbol, a period (2 taps), and a number 8. You'll get a message saying "Inverting Backlight," which will change it so that it won't reverse the colors when you turn the backlight on. To change it back, follow the same procedure, and it'll say "Normal Backlight." No software or hacks needed!

Why not just tap the contrast icon in the lower left hand corner, and adjust it that way??

B/C it doesn't dim that much, and the screen refresh looks like crap.

Is your concern battery life, or the brightness of the display (presumably, when reading at night)?

Your initial concern was battery life...  The battery life is incredible on these units even with the backlight on all the time (I never turn my SJ20 backlight off)!

If you're bugged by the brightness, the invert hack might do the trick for you, although I found it too hard on the eyes.

i had to return my SJ20 because of this extra super brightness with no control on SJ20.

i went for SL10, although a bit dull in medium light conditions, which is much better in dark.

Funny... I did just the opposite.

I returned the SL10 I bought, because the screen was basically un-readable in *any* light. I hadn't realized what I put up with over years of owning dull, green-screen, Palm products.

I love the brightness of the SJ20's screen. I'd never go back to dull, un-readable, green...

to me SL10 screen is fine (i keep the backlight on all the time). another reason for SL10 was normal AAA batteries, no LiIon to die in a yr or two.

My Clie's Li-Ion battery is 23 months old and it is still going strong.

I don't understand why would color Clies need this if they already have the brightness option, you know, the small button on the left-bottom corner of the graffiti area, the one that look like sun?

What would a year's worth of Dura-Cells cost?

I wonder if you can do this on SJ22, which is a colour device. The SJ20 is a B/W device.

BTW, IMO, SJ20's contrast is way too light by default, I tuned up the scale by 4 full jumps (tap 4 times to the right) to get usable greyscale, how about yours?

I believe that you access the brightness thru "menu options"...no button silk keys.

Huh?  What about the half-moon in the lower left corner of the silkscreen area?
