View Full Version : Application to use SD-card as internalmemory (with udmh)

Does anyone know application for palmos (I have zire 71) that can emulate SD-card as an internalmemory, so if i have 128mb SD-card...Then set UDMH to show 20000K of dynamic memory for some application (lets say LJP, because it can show the memory). After that if I run application (LJP), it will show that I've got ~20000k of memory?

Shortly: Is there application for palm that can emulate ext. memory as internal and works with UDMH?

Oh, does MemoryJack do that? If it does, can someone send me it?

memoryjack does not but an experimental app by me does

MemoryJack was really buggy. The last build of it was in beta. I would high-recommend that you not use it. It crashed my UX multiple times due to it had major conflicts with other applications.

MemoryJack worked really well on a few devices but not very well on others. I don't think it would have worked with UDMH, though.

Any progress in this thread? Now after release of beta sdhc driver it's even more interesting, right?

I couldn't find any good links to MemoryJack, demo or not. What a shame. I'd be willing to try it on my Clie TG50, risks be damned. 11 MB of RAM sucks.

It's gone. Brayder Technologies shut down a couple of years ago.

Even the Wayback Machine won't show it to me. Apparently the author had a robots.txt file preventing its archiving.

What a way to drop teasers about THE killer app, and then bury it entirely...

PiDirect also looks interesting, but again, I can't seem to find any good sources. Is there a good link for getting the latest version?

you can use msmount5 for read-only databases on card http://www.geocities.jp/tatsuonagamatsu/MSMount5/index-e.htm

forget MemoryJack, it was an unstable piece of crap due to author's lack of detailed knowledge of OS internals
PiDirect is for OS4 only, AFAIK

dmitrygr,

What's the state of your implementation of such a thing? I didn't find it in your Experimental section. Is it possible in OS5?

mine was different. it was not DB-oriented but memory-oriented. so it extended both dynamic and storage ram. it works, but i plan to not release it.

*whine* Wwwhhyyyy? It's like the Holy Grail of Palm programs! Does it chew through flash write cycles, destroying a card in short order? If it was just storage RAM, it wouldn't get writen very much. Does it make things very slow? That still beats something not running at all.

Could you give me a clue how it works? I assume it must hook some low level memory access function. I'd really, I mean REALLY like to increase the paltry 11Meg RAM on my Clie TG50. Does it run the risk of damaging/bricking devices?

It's like the Holy Grail of Palm programs!

just like all my other apps :D

i just decided against releasing it
that is my decision, and as such is beyond contestation

If you send it to jerramy at att dot net, I promise I won't distribute it. I'd love to try it out.

Dmitry, if you will ever change your mind please be aware that you have my support as discussed previously. I believe this one could be as successful as sdhc driver. I really hate the attitude of Palm and also hate seeing more and more people moving towards Windows Mobile. I believe better memory management could help a lot all palm users, and especially the group that decided for NVFS devices (like me with T5)

But as you said: it will be definitely and eventually your decision and as such will be respected, of course.

:S you could put it as freeware or paid app w/e don't let that program rot on your computer we could all use it

Seems to me, Dimitry, that you got the very desired effect you wanted with the teaser line above. If you didn't want people to bother you, why even mention it?

dmitrygr

To point out that it is both (1) possible and (2) probably only by me

@computerkidt
Look, I discussed once this topic with Dmitry. The point is, that the software plays really deeply with hardware, thus, untested, can cause serious damage. And I appreciate Dmitry's attitude, that he doesn't want to behave in a inressposible manner.

@all
I'm personally convinced, that this is only matter of time - because this kind of app is necessary, esp. for nvfs devices. And it's development should be natural step forward after release of fast sdhc driver. Maybe Dmitry should rewrite in the meantime fat32 for T5 to make it faster for swapping purposes. But for me also the wrapper works ok.

To sumarize: give please Dmitry some time to officialy release sdhc, then maybe he will consider making a step forward...

But it must be HIS decision.

Hey, you should just give it to 'em. They need to learn sometime... lol

(Dmitry releases an app, and 24 hours later, a thousand p*ssed off people are emailing him about their bricked PDAs...)

Hey, I was wondering, could PowerDrive run on non-LifeDrive PDAs? Like, could I start a new instance of OS on my Clie?
