Hello,
Is there an application replacing msimport that will let windows think my clie is a USB hard drive, without the need of installing sony scsi-usb driver (like a usb pen drive)?
Thanx.

It already shows up as a removeable drive, which is typically the same as a usb hard drive.

mastervtec:
msimport require the sony drivers to be installed on the PC.
with a USB pen drive, windows (2k or XP) uses some internal drivers: no need of dedicated drivers.
My question is: is there something replacing msimport that will make the PC use some windows drivers to access the memory stick without sony drivers.
So when I go to an unknown PC, I can connect my clie without installing sony drivers.
Is there such a msimport replacement?

USB pen drives all use a compatible controller.
The driver is pre-installed with Windows, and Mac OS.
That's why it works when you plug it in.
The problem with the Clie, is that it's not really a USB pen drive. Hence it doesn't have the same controller...
Perhaps it can be emulated, but I doubt that.

I burned the Sony MS drivers onto one of those miniature CD's. I keep it "handy" if I ever need to move data on a strange PC. I installed it on every PC in my house (5)! Much cheaper than a network! :D
It would be cool if you could just keep it on your MS and somehow force the PC to find it...

That would be neat, but an easy solution would be to put the drivers in your webspace so you can access them from anywhere.

Most computers are running XP now and will "pickup" the foreign drive.

Drivers on a device is to much of a security risk...
It might be possible if Sony could mimic a USB storage device. Then it would work on any platform without having to install drivers, as USB Storage drivers are included on (Win 2k, XP, Mac OS 8+, Mac OS X, and most *nix distributions).

Check out Filebox. It allows you to use the unused memory to transfer date between PDA and PC and back again.

Looks like it IS the clie's software that has the conflict:

Perhaps this can be fixed with a hack on the Clie?

I think so. I was looking for a patch/hack/software to solve this.

For only $20 you can buy a Lexar Jump Drive Trio at Walmart that lets you take you MS out of your Clie, put it in the Jump Drive and use it as a pen drive. No drivers required, except for Win 98. It's also USB 2.0 for faster access, if you have USB 2.0 ports on the PC.

If the PC has XP, I think the Clie can be used as pen drive. I sticked my Clie to a desktop PC and a laptop via its USB travel cable and launched MSImport, both of them recognized the Clie as 'Removable drive'. The PC (made by eMachine) and the laptop (made by Dell) are running XP and none has Clie or any PDA relate software in them.
I heard this works for PC running with Win2000 too, but I hadn't tried it yet. I know my PC with Win98se needs the MS driver.
