View Full Version : New NX Series Model...save me from the Tungsten C!!

OK...I've been holding on to my trusty NR70V, waiting for the right time to upgrade to an OS5 based model.
Then I got lucky and scored the $17 Best Buy 'deal' on the WL100 WiFi card, thinking I would make the jump to an NX.
Then I got cold feet, hearing the rumors about the 'soon' to be available NX replacement...so I kept the WL100 card, bought a wireless router, and got my house ready for my 'soon to be announced', new NX.
Then Palm releases the Tungsten C...which has a lot of the features I've been waiting for, especially the increased memory and WiFi.
And now I am in a state of complete and total confusion...
Do I return the WL100, or sell it on eBay, so I can buy a Tungsten C with a clear conscience...and give up VG and stereo sound?
Do I keep waiting for this mysterious NX2, with the rumors of a retractable CF slot and 32 MB RAM?
So I keep checking, and checking, and checking these forums, hoping for a clue, another rumor...something to save my sanity...and...nothing of substance has emerged...
Somebody PLEASE help...I haven't eaten in days, I haven't shaved for weeks, I can't stop reading and re-reading the same old posts looking for guidance.
I don't want to give up VG and stereo sound...I don't want to have to relegate all of my memory sticks and my WL100 to the bottom of a drawer...I want my new Clie...NOW!!!
If anyone can help, please post some words of encouragement, so I have something to read from the rubber room in the mental institution, where I am sure my wife will have me committed if I don't get off this computer sometime soon!!!

I think you should wait until the first week of next month. I'm almost postive by then Sony will bring out the big boys.
Amen!
When was the NZ announced? Late January-February?
I would say you wait until the next NX Clie comes out. Sony is probably busy upgrading the components! i.e. higher memory (could be more than what T | C has) and also the latest processor (PXA255) of future NX clies. I skipped NZ and would probably replace my NX once Sony announce the next model.
Cheers!

Palm Doc,
I understand your pain... I have a T665 with wireless network at home and been thinking alot about upgrading to a palm OS5 (NX or NZ)... these rumors are killing me.
Just give me the spec of the new machine so I can make a wise decision... it's all I ask.

Is this a replacement for the NX-60 or 70? Will it be a smaller form factor with 320 X 320 and keyboard like the NX-60, or some huge thing?
Any speculation?

I just spent a little personal time with the Tungsten C, and came away with the following observations:
PROS:
1. Screen quality is very good - probably the brightest screen Palm has ever made, although it has trouble displaying a true green. (The Clies have this problem too)
2. Extra memory is nice, although you don't really notice it in day-to-day operations.
3. Fast! - The processor speed is noticably faster from a UI exprience standpoint. Some preliminary tests I did with Power48 show it to be more than twice as fast as the NX, NZ, or TG series.
4. Built-in WIFI - very cool.
CONS:
1. The numerous missing software elements. This by far is the most irritating aspect of this device. Do you want to see how much memory is left in the device out of the box? Don't tap the battery icon looking for information there. Palm doesn't include that ability in the launcher like Sony does. Do you want to see what's on the SD card? Good luck! Palm doesn't include any kind of file manager. Do you want to be able to mount your SD card on your desktop? Nope, Palm didn't include that capability.
There are more injustices, but you see the point. Granted all of these things can be added by third-party software, but for $500 they should already be there.
2. BORING! Palm makes the most boring presentation in handhelds. When you first power on the device and look at the launcher screen, it seems so minimalist and pedestrian. The built-in applications are all utilitarian, it almost removes the fun factor from the device. For example, they include a world alarm clock program, but is there actually any world graphic included? Nope, just text. For $500 I want a little pizzazz.
3. The case construction feels extremely plastic-like and cheap. From a tactile standpoint it feels more like a child's toy. It's overall appearance is very cheap as well, way behind the sleek sophistication of the Clies.
4. The headphone / mic jack with no stereo support. Someone should be fired for that...
5. No backlight for keyboard
In all, I found it to be a very mixed bag, and it was easy to put down and take a pass on, and just wait for Sony to do it right. In all, the Tungsten C is perfect for business users. It's boring and forgettable.

Hey, I just got a NX70 (just got it from amazon and arrived about 10 minutes ago actually) and now I'm wondering if I should have waited. It's 430$ after a 50$ rebate, but if the new non-camera nx is close to 500$ I may get that one instead. hmmmm
anyone have any speculation on possible prices?

From all the post I've read so far from Cliesource and Brighthand, the speculated/rumor spec for the next nx (if I can recall correctly),
- 32 Mb RAM
- 1 MP camera with flash
- Built-in Bluetooth
- retractable CF slot
- Plam OS 5.2
- NZ form factor (but lighter & thinner)
- Price approx $600 (similar to NX launched price)

I also have an NR70V, and I'm pretty happy with it. I have waited to take the plunge on a new Clié, since I know they release new handhelds at least twice a year. I'm also planning to upgrade when the successor to the NX comes out. I will most probably wait until prices go down on it, since I don't NEED and upgrade, I just WANT and upgrade (the fact that I bought 3 handhelds in 2002 is also a factor in my decision).
We'll see what happens!

I'm not up on the new Palm offering, but my advice to you if you are budget minded is to get the NX70, since it's marked down and you have a marked down wl100 and new home wifi setup ready and waiting(instant gratification can be a good thing). If you aren't budget minded and are a power user, wait for the new NX. Seeing you have an NR I assume you see the difference between the Palm sized PDAs and the SUPER-sized Clies. That would suggest you prefer the all those multimedia features with the big screen. Also if you want a better digicam than the current NX and confirm the specs are better down the short road-maybe wait. What about an NZ too?:D
i'm in the same boat guys
i have a t665, and i've been thinking about getting an nx70 lately
but i really wanna see what options i get before i jump in.
i'm gonna go into U soon so i'll want at least WiFi preferably or BT at the very least.

I agree with this as I did the same thing last night. I'm waiting on however comes out with the right unit for me, whether it be Sony or Palm.

i have looked at a few things. Before i begin i must inform peoples here that i use a superior computer - a mac :D.
Ok. T|T vs NX70V:
Screen: Sony (320x160 bigger)
Graffiti Implementation: Sony (Sony's VG is the best)
Apps built-in: Sony (bar DataViz DTG)
Size: Palm
Weight: Palm
Expansion Built-in: Palm (SD is easier and cheaper to buy)
Stylus: Palm (no need for reset tip)
Cost: Palm
Connectivity: Palm
Multimedia: Sony (Duh!)
Hardware: Sony (PXA + DSP is better than OMAP w/DSP)
Hardware Features: Sony
Input Methods: Sony (better KB input)
Hardware Buttons: Palm (5-way + buttons always available)
Total:
T|T - 7
NX70V - 7
So now you have a sort of round-up of the lower end units i will do the same to the T|C.
T|C vs NX70V:
Screen: Sony (320x160 bigger)
Graffiti Implementation: Sony (Sony's VG is the best and does not fill the screen)
Apps built-in: Sony (bar DataViz DTG)
Size: Palm
Weight: Neutral
Expansion Built-in: Palm (SD is easier and cheaper to buy)
Stylus: Palm (no need for reset tip)
Cost: Neutral
Connectivity: Palm
Multimedia: Sony (hello palm - STEREO)
Hardware: Palm (just faster)
Hardware Features: Sony
Input Methods: Sony (Graffiti and KB is better)
Hardware Buttons: Palm (5-way + buttons always available)
Total:
T|C - 5
NX70V - 6
I know what i would buy. Do you really need me to compare the NZ90 and the T|C. Look unless you are playing games 100% of the time then get the sony. If you use a mac then $30 is not much for The Missing Sync (http://www.markspace.com/). I know that when i get my clie (NX70 or its successor) I will be buying it.
Long Live Entertainment in PDAs.

benixau,
I think you are not grading the T/C as high as you should in the hardware dept. You say it is only faster when grading the hardware, but you neglect the...
1, 64 meg (51 usable) RAM
2, Transreflective Screen (reported in many reviews to be quite remarkable)
3, SPEED....it is twice as fast!!!!
ALSO, when talking about the input methods, how is the sony better? Seems to me they are fairly even, they both have keyboards and they can both write on the screen....right?
I am an ex NR-70 user, now with a T/T and just ordered a T/C from Amazon...
Just an observation, I realise this a very Sony-Loyal board...

Tungsten C does not have virtual graffiti.... which is a definite minus in your case since you previously own an NR70v.
Just give Sony one more week. I'm sure someone will leak a picture of the replacement NX ;)

I feel just the opposite...The last thing I want when I use my PDA for personal AND business is to have boring and forgettable.
I'm waiting for the new Clie...please hurry!?!?!

I will admit to being an odd ball but I rarely use VG on my NR so I just might be the only one who would not miss it.

I can't divulge details but it shouldn't be too long. I made a promise to someone... but I'm waiting too. My NR is hardly reading the ms stick anymore and BB is willing to honor my service contract.

I heard the new palms only have mono out. This makes me sad for palm...maybe not. FYI

Just the Tungsten C. The Zire does have stereo sound and better MP3 playback than the Tungsten T.

And it was this one feature that sent me back for another look. Unfortunately, the negatives of the unit outweighed this tremendous positive

Even if you buy a T|C in the end, wait for Sony.

you can always wait for the next PDA to come out... if you can get over not having VG or bluetooth, get the T|C.

why compare the NX70 and NX60 to the Tungsten C, you guys should be comparing the next NXs with the TC.

ya man. BTW, if you think that you do not need VG and BT functions therefore you get the T/C, then I think you need to reconsider factors like,
- display size (Biggest diff)
- entertainment functions
- preloaded software
- build of the unit (T/C is too plastic)
Anyway, I'm waiting for the new clie, as for T/C - no thanks.

Since there's no hard facts on the next NX, that can't be done. It's just the timing of it. We can buy a T|C now, but not the next NX.

I have to disagree on this one. The NX has both MS and CF. I bought 128MB MS for $30 each (after rebate) from Dell; the cheapest 128MB SD card I was able to buy (for my digital camera) was $40. MS and SD seem to be equivalent in terms of memory support, Bluetooth, etc., plus the NX has CF, which is good for memory, modem, Wifi, and maybe other things if driver support appears.
