I imagine you can get used to anything, but I like having tactile response from my button when I press them. Going pure touch screen has some risk to it.

Wow, Palm just got put out of business by a keynote. I never wanted a Treo, but I sure as hell want this and since it runs Mac OS there will be software I need on it.

Bye Palm, it was a fun ride.

hear that applause...no it's not the apple fans clapping for the new ipod, it's the Treo fans clapping after a good postmortem speech...

If only Palm would look at the competition and radically change their products, or listen to society's wants!

Edit: I'm not disparaging Palm and I'm not a hypocrite, as I like my TX, but I believe that Palm would have a bigger userbase if they do the top two things more than what they do now!

Palm has been dead since Sony quit making Cliés.
Apple is just going to put it out of it's misery.

I would like to argue with this, but I haven't loved being a Palm owner since I had to replace my NX80. I really miss the Cliesource days.

Nope..... It'll never go.

The sensitivity if the screen will make it turn on & go nuts if you put it in your pocket, or if you don't have a HARD CASE for it. It'll run out of power every day- or sooner.

You NEED hard buttons, and an enclosed/protected screen.

What a waste of technology for TOTAL BLING.
thx

I'm sure Apple thought of all of that. They even mentioned that it can be locked to prevent it turning on when you don't want it to. As far as cases, this is an iPod product so it will have thousands of case options.

See the unlock at the bottom of the screen?

9:56am - iPhone is up on screen. He's got digital video running out. He's starting the power on, and has a gesture. Unlocks the phone by sliding finger across -- something you can't do by accident in your pocket.

With it claiming 16 hours of music and 5 hours of video, talk-time, or browsing, I'm willing to bet it lasts quite a while in stand-by mode.

Another interesting bit:

9:54am - We've also got some stuff you can't see -- 3 advanced sensors. It's got a proximity sensor, bring the iPhone to your ear and your display shuts off and toushccreen shuts down. Ambient light sensor -- adjusts brightness, saves power. Third thing is an accellerometer, it can tell whether you're in landscape and portraid. Let's turn it on.

hmm, I'd still prefer hard buttons for dialing

I think it is way tooo thin and I already guess that it will not last on the pocket more than week (it will break to two piece) and it is also so nice keep paper thin gadget on hand (it doesn't just feel good and stabile) Oh and btw, it also needs palm os, buttons like on th55 and flip cover for screen. Though, what is the screen resolution and color support?

OMG if its anything like the screen simulations on the apple site, I am in love and dumping Treo. I don't care too much for hard buttons, as long as the screen digitizer is as good as the TH55 then I'll be happy....if its like the Treo..I might be mad for dialing wrong numbers thanks to jumpy digitizer on that thing. Still I haven't felt this giddy for a long time since the VZ was announced.

Jumping from site to site and it seems that a majority of Palm and Windows Mobile users finally agree on one thing, they are dumping their phone for this iPhone.

There is no legal way for steve jobs to keep calling it an iphone. I beleive cisco has reserved that name years ago. And theres has been a trickle of interesting phones coming out this year. (I guess im just a bit uneasy about the price :D)
Ive been kinda looking at this one: http://www.openmoko.com/press/index.html No wifi as of yet(they promise it in next model) but looks interesting nonetheless. :D

Of course they are. This is the phone people have wanted from either Palm or Windows Mobile for years and it took Apple to pull it off. I like that the touch screen can register multiple screen presses at once. The way you zoom photos is pretty cool.
One question a lot of people have is whether or not Apple will release a cheaper non phone version maybe with an 80GB HDD. It would be the ultimate iPod/PDA.

That hasn't hurt sales of ipods at all and most HDDs last years so there isn't that much to fear. I see this touch screen interface on the regular iPod line eventually.

I bet I could crash a microdrive in a couple months, plus I've never seen a jogger or cycllist wearing one. When did the microdrive come out? I have only seen them for about a year or so...

The iPod debuted in 2001 and this technology is neither new nor is it as fragile as you claim. These are not the kind of microdrives in the LifeDrive. However, you don't use a HDD based player when running or biking. That is just common sense. You buy a flash based player for that. You could not break one of these through normal use in a few months. I know people that have iPods three or four years old. The rechargeable batteries are more likely to fail before the HDDs.

Either way...

My phone works perfectly and does everything I need it to do- make & receive phone calls. I have my palm to do the small Apps, and a PC for the big Apps.

I will NOT be buying one of those iPhones; nor do I even have a iPod (and I'm happier without one!:) )

This will help keep the enthusiasts loyal, but I'm betting this has no impact on the vast majority of smart phone users. I know several people with treos that use nothing but the built in aps.

Is it just me, or did anyone else get that "This is the 3rd device that Colligan has been hinting at for what seems like eons now" feeling, and Apple's releasing it...

I don't think it'll put much of a dent in Treo (or Blackberry) sales although there might be a couple of months of stagnation. I just can't see any touchscreen (even multi-touch) is going to replace a dedicated QWERTY thumboard (plus, although thin, it's footprint is pretty big to get that admittedly sweet looking screen on there).

This will probably have a bigger impact on the feature phone set (high end SE and Nokia), and probably cannibalize some iPod sales as well.

All that being said, if Palm had been listening, oh say, 2 years ago, they could have been on their 3rd generation of just such a device other than the 8gig flash at a reasonable price of course. Of course, I was thinking of picking up an unlocked Treo 680 to supplement or maybe replace my HTC Wizard but now I think I can handle sticking with what I have for another 6 months... just in case the multi-touch IS that good, and it plays nice with Windows syncing...

I was almost sure that iPhone will be unlocked and ready to go with all carriers. Like iPod and Mac that stole everyone's heart and money. mine too.. lol

and I am certain that will happen soon after the first excitements calmed down. There is noway that Apple limit itself and not please everyone. Smart and Sexy as it is, wont stop flirting with all of us.. lol

Cingular, this marriage wont last long... get ready to file divorce or get use to o.r.g.y.. :-)

I guess no one wants to buy my T610 anymore.... :-( I will keep my new Treo650 for this year... Damneeeeee

The suit is probably just a bargaining chip that Cisco will use to get the best deal. The upside for Apple is that it doesn't matter what they name it. Everyone loves it anyway. Apple won't pay a ransom for the name because they don't need it. They'll just circle each other for a bit, and then come to the same price they would have reached before the keynote. If anything has changed, it favors apple, not Cisco.

Ed Colligan not worried? (http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/columnists/16057579.htm)

``We've learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent phone,'' he said. ``PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They're not going to just walk in.''

You want some salt and pepper to eat those words? :D
Amazing how Palm have been in the smartphone market for years and they still don't know what the users want even though we've been SCREAMING at them for years what we want and here comes Apple, first device and they captured the hear of many smartphone users.

I've been a Palm user and enthusiast since the m500 came about. I just felt in love with the nice form factor, the thousands of apps, the excellent community and user-base supporting it <--that's us ;) , and because I've never found windows-based pda's to be that sexy, cheap or much more functional than Palms.

Along the years, I've become used to the platform's little quirks (not so great digitizers, so-so screens, crash-prone, etc.) and addicted to its ease-of-use, functionality, and impressive capabilities --ever watched a dvd on the widescreen of a T3?-

However, I've never felt inclined to buy a Treo smartphone. Having to settle for a square screen, limited memory, slower processor and nearly useless-browser is simply not option for me. I consider Treos to be the very best smartphones out there in the market now but not the very best pda's for me.

As such, I welcome the iPhone as a viable option for upgrading my old T3. As the owner of a intel-based Mac mini and having been an authorized reseller for the brand in the time of the PowerPC G3/ G4 processor, I know full-well about Apple's commitment to quality, great design and, above all, function over form philosophy. As other people here, I have some reservations regarding the finger-interface and the faceplate-quality -specially when you consider the ipod nano scratch-prone fiasco-. But I'm already salivating for the excellent browser and the endless possibilities of the MacOS X on the app side.

The beginning of the end for Palm? Could be. In my case, most likely will be.

Additional $100 for 8GB memory seems reasonable.

How fast is this machine?
