I don't understand the fascination with wanting to watch a movie on a tiny screen.

As for Zune being a ripoff, how so? It's competitively priced for what it is - primarily a music player. If my Dell DJ ever dies, I'll likely take a strong look at the Zune unless it proves to have serious reliability issues.

Did you ever see it closely? it's huge, ugly, heavy....
There are other brands with big screen and nice design and not so heavy...
When time comes that you will need a new player it will be 100 better players on the market.
good luck.

Poor man's converter of DVD to sony Clie TG50: Play your DVD and record it using a cybershot camera. My DSC-P10 will also record sound and place it on a memory stick. I then use image converter and play it on my TG50. I avoid all the DVD anti-copying locks and the time to record is about how long the normal DVD plays and about half that time added to do the conversion. (The cybershot has adapters to play the memorystick directly and you don't need a sony clie either)

If you are really considering a zune, take a look at the creative zen first.

Fortunately my Dell has been working fine, so I don't need to start looking just yet. But a quick comparison of the Zen Vision to the Zune shows them to be comparable; the MS is .3 inches taller, but slightly thinner. My Dell is comparable in size. The Zen claims 17 hrs audio playback time compared to 14 hrs on the Zune. What specific disadvantages does the Zune have compared to the Zen, or other players?

biggest disadvantage is the formats that can be played. The zune basically only plays .wmv, since most apps convert to avi, this is not good. I haven't looked carefully, but I believe the zen plays multiple formats.

Playing movies on a tiny screen holds absolutely zero interest for me, so that's not a spec I care about.

In which case why do you care about the zune? Primarily it has been created with a larger screen to watch movies better. If all you want is an mp3 player, there are better choices out there, such as iRiver.

iRiver doesn't seem to be as available as the others, and besides it looks like their 20GB & larger players have similar specs (i.e. larger screen). Not sure they even have anything current larger than 5GB. I want at least 20GB - don't want to have to limit how much music I load onto it. Besides, for the price of an 8GB it's a small step up to 20GB.

I don't know a whole lot about mp3 players. I just know that about 5 years ago my son bought an iRiver 30gb and he is still using it. It plays every possible music format including ogg. So I guess whatever you decide to go with, I would keep that in mind.
