Other than purchasing Jot 2 from CIC for about $50 dollars, is there any way that we can upgrade our Graffiti 1 to the new Graffiti 2 (like what's on the Zire 71 Running Palm OS 5.2.1)? I tried beaming the graffiti files from the Zire 71 to my NX-70 but when I reset it, it caused a recurring reset screen that forced me to hard reset.
I do like the Graffiti 2 but not enough to pay 50 bucks; plus, they might offer it as a free upgrade in the near future anyway?
Will we be able to upgrade our OS to 5.2.1 just like when the N-710 was flash upgraded to Palm OS 4.0 (similar to the N-760)?
Any thoughts anyone?

If you want something similar to Graffiti 2, and that lets you ALTER the strokes, add your own, etc, and that (like Graffiti 2) lets you write on the whole screen not just the Graffiti area, take a look at TealScript by TealPoint (www.tealpoint.com).

From what I've observed (only being a Clie user for a year or so), Sony doesn't tend to put out ROM updates any more. I think they feel they got burned on the 710 --> 760 upgrade since I think some "unofficial" ROM images were distributed freely around the Internet. I don't know if I'd like Graffiti 2. I've become so accustomed to doing everything like it is that I'd probably drive myself nuts. (How many people here start writing graffiti characters when they're writing on paper?) I couldn't use the Zaurus' stroke recognition stuff (I even tried "personalizing" it) because I was so used to how to write stuff on the Palm. I would like to see some of the OS 5.2 stuff (like the ssl lib) included in an update at some point. I'm sick of the netfront errors, and PocketLink won't do SSL connections without the SSL lib (which is missing from OS5.0).
Cheers!

well they couldn't do a rom-update from os 4 to os 5 because the hardware didnt allow that. Why do the leave free rom, if not for upgrading the os. Why do they provide more expensive flash-rom, if not for upgrading?

My guess would be twofold. First, it allows a standardized platform with plenty of room for local customization. For instance, the European model has a lot more languages and thus less free space.
Second, flash memory comes in standard sizes so it would be cheaper/simpler to get one piece that is too large than two (or more) that would be needed to be just the right size.
Sure there's room for upgrading but I am sure that that is not the primary consideration.
Also, as has already been stated, Sony doesn't seem to be too interested in adding functionality to older models as that would detract from sales of the newer ones.

Also, you should try out Graffiti Anywhere. It's free and allows for use of the entire screen to enter graffiti similar to jot. In combination with TealScript, that's your Graffiti 2 alternative.

Because the same ROM is used worldwide. The Japanese and UK models usually take up most of the ROM anyway. The USA models are fortunate to have a few mb's spare.
Sony is NOT going to do any upgrades. System patches to RAM maybe, but that's it!

I wouldn't count on sony for anything after purchasing a clie. Clies crush any competition, but sony is propietary and doesn't always have good follow-up.

TealScript doesn't work with Graffiti Anywhere. However, on PalmOS5, it has similar functionality built in.

One of the updates in the betas leading up to the 3.00 release mentioned something about detecting if the PDA had Graffiti 2 installed to compensate for the slightly different environment, so I suspect that it will allow for this.

Actually, I'm thankful Sony still has Grafitti 1 (for now.) Jot is a pain, in my opinion, because it uses several double-stroke characters (try writing an "L" in Jot/Graffiti 2 - you'll go nuts.) The Grafitti 1 symbols are really easy to learn, so customization - though nice for some users, I guess - isn't really that useful to me. I want speed, and that's what G1 offers, again, in my opinion, in greater quantities than any other input method...especially when used with the free Grafitti anywhere add-on..

Also worth trying is NewPen, by the same author as OKey. Very similar to GraffitiAnywhere, but with some slightly different feartues... a bit more intelligent and automated too.

I've been using Jot 2 for a while now (free upgrade from a looong time ago) and you can get away without having to do two strokes on some of the letters. X seems to be the only one that I can't get without having to lift the pen for two strokes.
Otherwise you can pretty much use graffiti 1 strokes and or jot strokes (now graffiti2) interchangeably.
