Got an NR 70, which has a similar screen, and have been abusing it for almost a year without the slightest incident. Surprisingly it's pretty bullet proof....

I've got a NX which again has a similar screen/design.....

no problems what so ever, just as long as you dont turn the screen the wrong way with any force

or else it will be doing a linda blair ;)

I personally have owned the nr, nx, and now the nz model. I have used and abused for quite some time. I have even tried to turn the screen the wrong way.
They seem to be extremely durable, and have I had absolutely no problems with the swivel screen.
:D

If you are nervous about it, buy the service plan and you should be covered.;)

The biggest worry is the hinge. NR and NX hinges loosen over time (no word on NZ). It's an annoyance, but one that you cannot fix without voiding the warranty (thus, you use the warranty and get someone else to fix it).

Careful, I think you're making a broad generalization. I have had my NR70V since last May and my hinge has NOT loosened over time. I've had no problems with the hinge whatsoever.

Not to say that some people may have experienced a problem, but I don't think it's fair to state, or imply, that this is a given with all hinges. It's not.

dmpsam, narniahopper & PDH LA,

Thanks for your replies as well.

I'll see what the retailer offers and look into that extended warranty.

Thanks to all.. calms my jitters about the durability issue... (obviously depending on how u take care of it on a day to day basis)

Many thanks,

I had the same feelings about the hinge before I purchased one and someone pointed out to me that Sony has been using hinges in their video cameras for years, so they probably have it perfected by now. I've found that to be true with both my NR and my NZ. No problems at all. However, the display model of the NZ at my local Best Buy was broken. They had a big sign on it that said DO NOT SWIVEL THE SCREEN IT IS BROKEN. I thought that was poor advertising. But hey, I bought one anyway :-) - I'm a sucker for a new toy.
