1.) Can I install Power48 by itself, or do I need to do something else first? I read a lot about it, and I don't understand most of this emulator stuff, but to me it looks like this was made for a HP something, and it requires some emulator to run this ca|culator.

2.) How do I update my TX's list of supported BT stuff? I've got a Samsung A640 phone and a Motorola HS850 that it doesn't list. The TX tells me to update it, but I can't figure out how. Any suggestions?

3.) If I install TCPMP on the SD card instead of on the internal memory, will it still work for watching movies off the same SD card? I'd rather just have TCPMP on every SD card than have it on the valueable internal memory. If I just put the TCPMP and a couple .avi movies on the SD card, will I still be able to access the movie the same?

4.) How do I change skins? Can I put them on the SD card, if so what happens if I put in a different card without that skin on it? Saw a couple skin files floating around, but I can't seem to find a way to apply them. I couldn't find a FAQ or walkthrough about this either.

5.) Is there a map program that doesn't require internet connection? Something I can have around if I get lost or something. Essentially what I'm looking for is a portable yellowpages that also has maps. But one or the other is better than none. Am I making any sense? I found PocketStreets, but its Pocket PC only.

I've done some searches, and I couldn't find any real answers to these questions. A lot of people on here are incredibly smart and sometimes explain things that go over my head. I know the basics, and I'm relatively PC savvy, but I'm new to Palm.

Thanks.

1)Power48 requires an HP ROM as well as the Power48 app. After downloading the zip file, there's a link in the README to the ROMs on the HP website as well as instructions to get it all working. I personally use the ROM from the 49G instead of the 48 but it's really just personal choice.

2)Sorry can't help you here - don't use bluetooth

3)I've never tried running TCPMP off the card but a quick Google search on this shows that people have gotten it to work - some have mentioned using PowerRun (an app to allow other apps to run from card). So I'd say give it a try if you're worried about space... However, I find that the 128MB of internal space is more than enough and I just keep all of my music, books, docs, extra skins and stuff on the card. But to each his own...
:)

4) To apply skins you'll need either PalmRevolt or SkinUI - I personally use SkinUI. And I store my extra skins on the card but the main skin in use needs to be on the handheld - they're only a few hundred KB though so no big deal.

5) Here's a good place to start... http://applications.palmsource.com/Software/Solutions.asp?Ent=&PCID=28&PSCID=98

There's also Mapopolis, KMaps and EarthComber. I've tried EarthComber before and it wasn't bad - plus it's free. I just found I didn't use it very often.

thanks, how reliable is that ROM program? I'm just paranoid.

The roms are very reliable, you just need to follow the instructions on the web site (power48)... Or some1 can send you the files you need. This will cause the calc to prompt you to try to recover the memory of your calculators because they dont match with the RAM. I think its better if you go through all instructions by yourself.

2.) How do I update my TX's list of supported BT stuff? I've got a Samsung A640 phone and a Motorola HS850 that it doesn't list. The TX tells me to update it, but I can't figure out how. Any suggestions?

You need to be able to see the devices in order to list them in whatever list you are using. It depends on the app, but normaly, when you are using a BT transfer, you are promped to a list where you can either select known devices, nearby devices, or trusted devices. First you need to enable in your cell phones that other devices can see them, then try to update the list on your TX.

I agree with pincushionqueen. I guess you wont have much troubles with the TX and that configuration, but I strongly recomend to install the app onto your RAM; it is copied to your RAM with your launcher and deleted after you exit the program anyways! And unless you are really running out of space you can have the application in your card, but come on, the TX has enough space to handle that!

4.) How do I change skins? Can I put them on the SD card, if so what happens if I put in a different card without that skin on it? Saw a couple skin files floating around, but I can't seem to find a way to apply them. I couldn't find a FAQ or walkthrough about this either.

Skins, as PCQ wrote, you can use SkinUI or PalmRevolt. But you need to have either program to load skins. Also, with your TX, you will be able to have skins for the DIA (dynamic imput area) and status bar with MySkin. Also other programs may have the ability to load their own skins, you need to know what skin corresponds to which one.

hmmm no idea, maybe GoogleMaps can help?

Running Power48 on a TX properly will require this (second line): http://www.metaviewsoft.de/en/

thanks. I tried using google maps, while on wifi and it rocked. What I can't figure out is how to view the maps once I turn wifi off. When I searched someone said that the tx saves the pages, so I should be able to go back and view them. But I'm not sure How.

After some more searching, I realized The Palm street finder might work for what I need it for, but google maps is ideal. If I could just get the entire city that I want, with all the google maps data saved onto my card so I could view it offline, that would rock.

EarthComber is a great map program that doesn't require an internet connection.

Am I mistaken, or does mapopolis not work properly on our TX's? I found this on their website: "The card products will not run on the Palm TX, Pocket PC, or Windows Mobile Smartphone."

When I put the two files on my palm (device not card) memory, and loaded the philly map it comes with onto my card, it just showed a grey screen. It pulled up different spots and locations and things, but I could never get a real image.

3.) I put the TCPMP app in RAM, where it consumes only 670k. To save space, I put all the codecs on my SD card, in the PALM/Launcher subdirectory. Works fine.

another dumb question:

Can I connect to my PC's internet on my palm through USB cable?

I don't see why not, though I never tried it. Maybe someone else has...?

You can share your PC's Internet connection wirelessly over Bluetooth, provided your PC has a 25$ Bluetooth adapter plugged into it, or already comes with Bluetooth. I can do this with both my home and office PCs. You can also share your PC's Internet connection wirelessly over Wi-fi, provided you have a $40 wireless router.

In both the cases you mention it sounds to me like you are connecting wirelessly, not through the USB cable. I do recall someone asking this before, possibly even myself, but I don't recall the answer.

Yes, I was suggesting Bluetooth or Wi-fi connections as alternatives because they are simpler (though they do require additional investment in hardware).

Yes, they are somewhat simpler. However, many times connecting via wifi is very simple if you are near an open AP (or if you have the WEP key). There are more and more open APs springing up. I connect all the time while I'm waiting for the bus to one called DowntownWifi. It is an open wifi network run by our neighborhood library and town center. It's broadcast range is very good, you can get it anywhere in the fairly large downtown area. So wifi may be the way to go if you can't do it through the cable.

But I know how it feels, I don't have a decent wifi AP near me at work (1 2 floors up, another 2 floors down and I don't get great reception from either with my TX). I would love to be able to share my computer's internet connection via USB, but as I recall there are some programming difficulties.

i still have not found an answer to this question. However, i've realized its not as big of a deal as I thought.
