ok. so i lost my stylus on the fourth day. almost lost the other one the other day too. any suggestions as to how i can keep the dang thing tight in its silo ?

heard there was this liquid thingy that you were supposed to slather around the head. don't think we have that thingy in this part of the world. any other less tricky solution ?

thanks babes

I have the same problem. Lost one already. I think it's a intentional plah from Sony...

A long time ago I read about taking apart a lighter to get an rubber o-ring to add to the stylus makes a big difference. Basically once you get the o-ring you unscrew the the stylus and put it in one of the sections that you separated. Wish I could remember more but it was months and many, many beers ago....

Supposedly it did work with the T series stylus though...

Yeah, when the Treos first came out they had a serious problem with the stylus loosening to the point that it wasn't even held in place at all. Many fixed the problem by wrapping a small piece of tape around the top of the stylus...maybe it will work on the TG...I wouldn't know because I don't really have a problem myself.

I thought I lost it on the 2nd day! and finally I found out it was in my pocket, must have slipped out when I took out the Clie.

I guess, the best way is to get pack of spare stylus. :)

Here's teh site on how to do it with the o-ring from a lighter:

http://www.clieuk.co.uk/cliestylus.htm

I tried this with my T615c stylus (which one day spontaneously decided not to stay in the silo when the T615c was inverted) and it works like a charm. The stylus will come out a bit but will not fall out.

Hopefully my TG50 stylus will stay put. I use a Pilot Pentopia combo pen/pencil/stylus most of the time so I leave teh Clie stylus in the silo. When I need to travel light, I leave teh Pilot behind and use the Clie stylus. But yeah, from day one I could se that the location of the stylus would be a problem. Seems to me they could have swapped the headphone jack with the stylus silo, but then people would complain about the headphone jack being at the bottom. One good thing about the stylus being at the bottom is that when it snags on your pocket as you pull it out, the stylus should end up in your pocket.

Wow, nice engineering. :) Have to find some friends of mine who smoke...

Actura, you could always take up smoking yourself! We need more NYC smokers to get this silly ban lifted!

Having said that, you can bet I'll lose one now! :)

I tried that rubber O ring from the lighter thing on my TG50 stylus, but alas, it would not work on that one. the stylus is too narrow and the O ring would squish out to the sides when you tighten the end ,plus it makes it too bulky to fit in the stylus slot. :( Too bad, it was actually a good idea, and would probably work with a fatter stylus.

The TG50 Stylus sticks in remarkably well though. I don't know, its kind of tought to remove it actually, I have to use my nails and I dig into the grooves on the stylus head. I'm actually afraid of like, snapping off the grooves rather than losing the stylus

I agree, I was actually wondering what this discussion was all about. I have to make a bit of an effort to get it out. Maybe Sony changed something with later models. (mine is pretty recent)

I lost mine within 2 weeks. <to get more technical> it must have got caught by the rim of my jean pocket when the unit was almost all the way out. In this case there's no way the stylus would stay in the pocket. Was thinking about getting one of those 3-in-1 as a replacement, but now I think there's a chance I might loose that as well.

when you put the ring from the lighter in, you should not screw the stylus tip too tightly. then it would fit quite nicely. but then again, the tip would be loose, and its quite annoying when you write with a loose tipped stylus. i am using a thicker stylus right now. so the darn original one is still snug and happy in its place .. lost 2 styli in 2 weeks .. damn. both got caught in something.

so, conclusion. get an external stylus or add super glue (jeez) to make the ring stay in place.

Heres an idea. I was thinking of a way to be able to have the stylus out off hand without having to worry about losing it, or without having to slide it back into its holder. I was thinking that maybe you could tie a string, or some cord to the little bar where you tie the TG50 hand strap and tie the cord to the stylus. It might look gay though, nhaha :D But, whatever it takes not to lose the stylus right? They are expensive I assume?

Oh and Scott, in another post, someone said the O-ring trick doesn't work with the TG50's stylus because the ring is too fat and wont let the stylus slide in all the way until it clicks.

Well, the stylus packs are not TERRIBLY expensive, but at around 15 bucks for a pack of three, it could get pretty expensive for those who tend to loose a stylus every week or so. I actually lost one my first week, but something amazing happened last night and I actually FOUND it!!! it was in the bottom of my clothes hamper. hee hee hee :D That might be a good place for all of you other people to start your search. :p

Well I don't have a TG50 but a T665 instead, and I have this very problem with the Stylus. Reading and seeing the magic of the O-Ring made me wonder if there could be an easer way, so I looked up to my wife's desk and saw transparent tape, and said to myself what if I could make the top of the stylus a little thicker, just enough to make it hold tight to my Clié on the way in and....to my surprise it worked great, and I can hardly see the tape on the Stylus. It may take a while to get the right amount of tape on the stylus to make the operation a success, but it's definitely another way out of this problem. Take a shot at it, it might work on the TG50 models.

I'm also using the "tape on the top" method on my Clie N760 as well and it works well for me...

Well you could try fitting the top of the stylus with wrapping it round with a little cellaphone tape

Shipwreck

The tape on the top of the stylus with the TG50 works quite well, although it was surprising just how little tape it took to get a nice snug, but not too tight of a fit. I don't see any of those little suckers slipping out on me now. :)

Another source of the o-rings is from dart stores. It's quite common to put an o-ring on the tail portion before screwing it onto the body of the darts. They are conmmonly 3/$1.50. But I'm not sure how expensive lighters are.

I just don't understand why you guys loose your stylus so easily...do you drop it when you pull it out? spontanuously loose out? or you put it somewhere and forgot to pick it up?

My stylus actually "snap" into the slot.

Really confused

Hi Wilsonch_98. Do you have a T665C? Cause most of us after a while see that the stylus losses the grip on the Clie.

Shipwreck
05-14-2003, 05:22 AM
Well, the Stylus usually falls out when it gets caught on your pocket, or on an edge of your palm pouch when you pull it out. The Stylus on the TG50 is as you know on the bottom, and that is bound to happen. I wish Sony would have put it on top like normal. :(

The one with pores! Found mainly in Doctor offices and Health care
facilities. Just wrap around one mm wide and 3 mm long at the top
portion of your styli.

I find that the best way to fix this problem is to take apart the clie, find the shaft, and put electrical tape on the inside. the surface is slick and it makes your shaft bigger, thus it stays in from being mashed in there and the slick tape allows the stylus to slide out...

Go ask Sony. They might give you a new one for free if you tell them how may sylus you have lost.

Complain about the poor engineering of SJ33 and they will believe you!

a little fatter and will make you a little happier.

I nearly lost the stylus a couple of times when pulling it out of the pocket. I have made habit of turning the TG50 heads (top) down when placing it in my pocket (back pocket or inner pocket). It has solved the problem so far.

I think I may have desperatly stumbled onto a more desperate and common way to deal with the loose stylus.

I keep the one lighter in my home for emergecy candles, so I wasn't interested in destryoing it. But I'll bet that most folks DO have some aluminum foil in the house (or can easily beg a corner from someones lunch).

I used heavy duty foil, tore off a small corner, about 2" square or smaller, but large enough too, fold it over twice, put that on top of the bottom part of my stylus, and punched through with the top and screwed it back in firmly, but lose enough to get it back off. Its very easy to remove the foil you don't need. I haven't noticed any damage to anything. Aluminum is none-conducting. Should this stop working, I can do it again, i.e., be foiled again.

I use a T615...constantly....with pride!

The cigaret lighter o-ring trick works great for me.

After 2 year of use, pulling and shoving the stylus, it started to fall off the N760C whenever I turn the Clie up-side down before I put it in my pants front pocket. I put the Clie this way to protect the memorystick from accidentally dislodging whenever I want to pull the Clie out of my pocket. My finger tips tended to push down the memorystick as they reached down into the pocket.

The cool thing about this o-ring trick is that the fit firmness of the stylus as it slides into the mounting hole can be adjusted by the screw. If it gets loose, just tighten the screw down a bit.
