View Full Version : Is there any way we can make the removal/insertion of the battery easier

Hey all,
Just a thought. Anyone thought of making the removal and insertion of the UX battery easier considering the known issue of battery life with this unit?
That way we could easily replace our dead batteries on the road.
Hmm......another thought whilst typing this message. How do we charge the spare battery?
Any ideas?

Just another angle on this thread.
Doing some more research on the subject, i came across 'battery chargers'. Thats is, having an external battery source (4 AA batteries) possibly charging the UX's internal battery.
I even came across a solar powered battery charger.
Anyone have any ideas on this??

well i had an idea after admiring hippo's nokia battery hot swap battery mod.
my idea does not involve any soldering or tinkering with the insides but involves a balloon, a pair of scissors and a stanley knife.
step one
get hold of a long blow up balloon, the kind that makes a suasage or a dog if you got the skill and cut the tip of the ballon off at about 2 cm from the tip(not the end you blow in)
step two
open up your ux50/40 and measure the length bewteen the connector and and the edge of the battery on both sides of the connector whilst its still in the ux and write them down (dont close the ux yet)
step three
cut the notches off the end of battery
step four
cut a very small hole in the end of ballon tip that you cut earlier so that you can slide it over the battery and connector so that the connector is held in place by the balloon tip and move it around until its in the right place (use the measurements recorded earlier)
step five
stick on a tab to the end of the battery or if you have a power runner battery it should already have a black tab
step six
with your ux still open test the allignment of the connector with repect to the battery and see that it slides in and out easily
step seven
close your ux up and from now on you wont have to open your ux to replace the battery, just the side flap which opens with a philips head screw driver and hopefully the battery can be slid in and out with ease and connects correctly
umm i havent actually got round to doing this yet hence the lack of pics but it should work

oh and i was pondering on making a solar panel on my back pack so that the ux is charged on the go but.....
tooo busy. mechanical engineering at uni is not only boring but very time consuming, not to mention difficult

Eva - are you actually going to try the above when the speaker dock is complete?

maybe
the solar power thing will take a bit more time to figure out, and maybe expensive, i'll have to use a flexible solar panel and hook it up to either a really big capacitor or more sensibly, a small battery to hold the charge and convey to the ux as required
i will be doing the 'warm' swap battery mod but the method i explained won't work, i tried it and the rubber balloon won't hold the connector in place
my new method of doing this is to use a glue gun!
it involves making replicas of the battery cover and sticking it to the battery and making the connector stiff enough using hot glue so that it stays in the right place
that will result in a very easily replaceable battery, that does not require taking the back cover off
but ill do that after i finish the speaker dock

Have you seen this (http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/shop/Accessories.7/Sony.27/Logic_3.63/ACCPSPSOLAR/Logic_3_Sony_PSP_Solar_Charger.822.html)? There are a few other MP3 chargers on the same site which would do the same job.

LOL !
it looks like a GameBoyAdvance !!

yeah i have seen those, but they have brittle solar panels that would not really survive on a backpack, i may need to buy one to have a look at the electronics if get the time to make my own
i was thinking of having the flexible solar panel to be attached to the backpack by velcro
it does look like a gameboy, ive also seen one that twists out into 3 petals nice ideas, but i dont know how well they collect energy with such small surface areas

I have already seen a bagpack that also charges your ipod etc... search on google...
than you can find out which solar charger they used...
