View Full Version : Device Driver Wish List

Throughout the various threads, I mention made of drivers for other devices besides the Compact Flash memory driver. EruWare has said that in the future they would look into other types of device drivers. Some of what have already been mentioned are:

CD ROM

External Hard Drive

GSM

GPRS

External USB port

What other ideas could be given to Amir and his company?

Any CF questions, please post or start another thread if you can, Thanks!

GPS and GSM, definitely....

I think the USB host controller is very very importanht. Also there's a CF card for PPC that allows you to hook your device to a VCR or anything with the standard video jacks, that would be incredibly awesome to have for PalmOS...If nothing else, maybe they could talk the company into writing drivers for it...

Personally I think the driver still needs some work before moving onto anything else.

The masking mode while effective is hardly perfect, you lose your memory stick and need to soft-reset before getting it back.

As for new stuff, GPS & Bluetooth...

N2IFP, do you talk to Amir a lot about this stuff?

i also think a video output cf card driver would be good to have as well. similar to the nz however be able to hook your nx/nz to a normal tv and play your home made video on it.

currently i beleive that the nz can only do pictures. please correct me if im wrong.....

I second what zzv347 stated. The memory driver still needs attention. It is great as it is, but I feel like they can really turn it into something amazing.

But I'll play the game... I want GPS!

I would like to pilot my "coffee machine" with it :)

No, in fact I would like to have a mode where, in MS Masquering mode, I could also access (natively) to the MS with the multi volumes software... Like the MP3 trick told before...

So I could use MS BT and play MP3.

From my point of view Eruware should first make the CF drivers integrate into the Clie environment as seamlessly as possible. E.g. I would like to see it work with MSImport.

We don't know if there will be a CF slot with new Clie models. So let's make the CF memory drivers work better and enjoy them as long as possible.

A driver for compact flash modem will be very useful. storage will be on ms and the modem can be used for dialup to isp for web and email.

imagine configuring the clie to download your emails and update avantgo every morning before you go to work. Imagine also the clie as a standalone device without needing to sync with the pc.

Cool right?

I'd like to see something like the Semson&Co 4-1 CFmulti adapter supported. I use several types of card memory and it would be great to get them into my NX with one small add-in.
I'm going out west on vacash in a couple of weeks and would love not have to drag along the laptop for DL-ing photos just to free up the card. I have to wait 'til evening or somewhere that I can spend a little time.

Do you mean you tried it and it didn't work? Actually, the CF drivers seems to work with a couple of CF adapter cards. There is a thread (http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12160) about a "4-in-1" adapter that does work and personally I tried a CF/Smartcard adapter and posted here (http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12043) that it works well.

I will go on a holiday trip tomorrow and it's great to know that now I can check the pictures from my digital camera on the NX70. Thanks you, Eruware! :)

There already is a driver for some CF modems, Ambicom is one modem.

No, not directly, but there was conversation between Amir and the beta testers from time to time. The idea of the thread was to pass it along to EruWare for future and viable ideas!

I don't disagree, but it still can't hurt to think about the future in the meantime. I look at it this way, if the future looks bright, it's more of an inducement to get it right :)!

Hi Larry,

I would agree innovation is important. But so is keeping your customers happy, and part of that is ironing out the bugs in delivered software.

I think the key here is to deliver what is not available on the Clie via MS, such as GPS. Or deliver the same product at a lower price, such as Bluetooth CF.

Basically great job, dot the i's and cross the t's then lets move on.

GSM CF will be a very interesting driver cos it will make the NX a Tungsten W competitor with OS5!!! Apparently Audiovox already makes a tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 CF card.

Donno if the battery can take it though!

Think Clem is refering to this http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=RTM8000

However it looks like the software is Pocket PC only...

As for CF GPS, how about this http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/viewprod.php?product_id=161&category_id=15

Seems to work with a selection of mapping software.

Additional RAM
Webcam/videoconferencing
Wifi (802.11g)

I would just like to be able to use the CF for 'plug n play' movies, even if I had to rent them or pay for them, that were not jerky and were more easy/fast to upload. I don't like holding a heavy (and often hot!) laptop or a vdp on a plane or train to watch a movie, the first time the person in front of you reclines, there goes the equipment... but I need it to be a more seamless process. I also like the other video-related ideas, like webcam/videoconferencing. Each user has their area of need.

I'm not quite sure, if ever the current cf-memory-driver will let you use the cf-memory-card for all the same apps (and built in sony apps) like the memory-stick does.

Therefore number one on my wishlist is a cf-bluetoot-driver, letting me still use my memory-stick slot for a memory-stick instead of a bluetooth-memory-stick.

This is really nonsense if you record a movie or photo's to the memory stick. copy them via file-manager to ram, swap the memory-stick vs. the bluetoot-memory-stick to send them via email.

Right it won't, the reason is the Sony apps, not the CF driver. Somehow Amir and his cohorts have managed to make it possible to use most of the built-in Sony apps.

Definately cf GPS, CF Bluetooth, the audiovox cf cellular card, sprint cf cell card, and non sony 802.11b cf cards. In other words all the CF cards that the PPC is hogging!

I'd love to be able to buy and use a $30 DLink CF 802.11b card instead of Sony's $150 scam of a card.

Yeah, cheap WiFi is my #1 priority. I mean do you really need a CD-ROM for your PDA?

Also 802.11a and 802.11g would be nice too.

Well, being an owner of an 802.11a AP and pcmcia card I have this to say.

Great throughput. Horrid range. High power consumption.

Definitely want a Bluetooth driver and a Bluetooth CF card for my NX70V. I don't like having to swap out the BT memory stick every time I need a memory stick with some memory (eg for MP3 playing). I am surprised that some 3rd party has not come up with such a solution, especially a Bluetooth CF card maufacturer trying to expand their potential market to all "Clie with CF slot" owners. Does anyone know of one?

ozgurbulbul
07-27-2003, 05:44 PM
I can use wifi and BT with the current cards, GSM/GPRS, GPS and USB host controller would really help as well.
