Should setting up a GPRS connection be this difficult?

Although I am hoping that others may have already encountered and overcome this problem, I fear that GPRS services that require neither a username, nor a password are pretty rare:

My question is - how can I make my SJ33 realise that I do not need a username or password for a GPRS connection. There seems to be a glaring flaw in the network preferneces setup that will not accept the absence of either, or both - returns "error
:incomplete setup Please check network preferences". I've tried entering a space for both, but my T39 refuses the connection - "unsupported GPRS parameters". I've tried the connection via bluetooth and cable on my pc with exactly the same setup and it works flawlessy.

Any suggestions would be met with sincere gratitude.

Are you sure the username and password need to be blank?!

Or maybe the provider doesn't care what you have for username and password!

For O2 here in Ireland the username and password can be anything - I simply use gprs for both and all works ok.

Unfortunately, yes - I tried using a random pass/username, but to no avail. My provider has told me both fields need to be blank for the connection to work. Strangely they seem not to have encountered the same problem with any of their customers in the past. There must be some way to overcome the blank username/password bug. I'm one step short of actually contacting Sony tech support!

try putting a space in the logon and password boxes (just one space on the space bar).
This worked for me on the tmobile gprs account. Oddly, by just leaving those two boxes completely blank, it didn't work.

Good luck

Yah - tried the space also, but apparently the spaces are treated as password info by my provider and I get the message "unsupported GPRS parameters" on my phone. Does anybody know of a hack for OS 4.1 that gets the network prefs to accept blank entries for the username and password fields? I know now that the blank fields are the problem as I have reproduced the connection on my PC - and as dial up neworking on XP accepts blank username/password fields, the connection always works (i.e. zero scripting/other parameters).
