I need testers with the following devices. For each of them, I would ideally want one tester who used 1.xx and one who is completely new to FontSmoother. Please specify which device you have and whether you are new to FontSmoother.

1. Tungsten T
2. Tungsten C
3. Clie UX
4. Clie NX/NZ
5. Tapwave Zodiac
6. Treo 650
7. LifeDrive
8. TX (only need a user who is new to FontSmoother)
9. Treo 680/700

You get a free copy of FontSmoother 2.0 out of this (assuming the testing process doesn't kill 2.0 and I don't have to roll back to 1.7x). Of course registered 1.x users get 2.0 for free. :-)

Hi,
I'd love to test the new version on my T3. I remember having some problem with latest versions, so I checked my current version which was 1.45 (and works perfectly).
I started installing 1.78 to 1.51 versions on my T3, but none worked. V. 1.46 did work.
I am using FontHackV with fonts made with FontSmoother, and even made some new fonts, and installed some of the provided fonts, but I cant get FontSmoother to work. I have changed the settings, and resetted the T3 to no avail.
I don't complain about v. 1.46, readability is superb for me, I even use it with DateBk 6, and it looks great with a slightly smaller, smoothed font. It just does not hightlight well the slot hour when you tap on a line to add an appointment --it is a blue rounded square on inverted (white text)-- and I thought this could be ok with newer versions (white text smoothing, I guess).
I'll try v. 2.00 anyway, but I thougth I should be familiar with at least v. 1.78.
Thanks,
Alex

I see the FontHackV issue. Around 1.4x I made a new font subst system. This resulted, it seems, in a problem where FS and FHV only work if FS is activated first, then FHV. The current beta will check if FHV is on, and if it is, it will suggest either a reset (on reset the order will be fine with the beta) or else going to yahm to toggle FHV.

Not quite. The current beta also has an Easy Mode for novice users, and it starts in it by default.

Hi Alex,

Does it still have the option under Mode: Use Fonts4OS5's settings? This is because I need to tweak individual Font settings instead of just by Font Pack, unless you are adding that feature to v2.00 ;-)

Greetings! I've been playing with setting the fonts for various applications and I've run across a possible bug? I'm posting here to see if anyone else that is beta testing is having the same problem or if it's just me...

Almost every time I go to set a font for Blazer, as soon as I tap on the font selected I get a reset and then after the reset, the font in unchanged in Blazer. I'm not sure if it's a particular type of font or what (sorry, I've been grabbing fonts from several sources to try out). It does seem to reset more often with serif type fonts (ie: Century Schoolbook, Utopia) than with sans type fonts (ie: trebuchet and tahoma).

Anyone else experiencing this?

Yes: choose "More".

1. Is this true just for Blazer?

2. What mode is FontSmoother in?

1. I appears to be true just for Blazer - any of the other apps are accepting a different font setting than the default without issue. However, uniCMD doesn't like some of the fonts and resets when I open the application itself, but that's different than what's happening with FontSmoother and Blazer. FontSmoother is actually resetting when I try to set a differing font for Blazer - so this appears to be a problem with FontSmoother itself and not Blazer. Blazer will open and display any font that I've selected in FontSmoother and FontSmoother is fine as long as I have Blazer set to "Use Defaults". The problem comes when I have one system font and try to set a different font for Blazer in particular.

2. I'm in advanced mode - is there a way to set an individual application font in easy mode?

What happens when you vary another setting for Blazer, like changing smart lists mode for it? Or just tapping on "App. active"?

2. I'm in advanced mode - is there a way to set an individual application font in easy mode?

No, there isn't. I meant, which mode in the "More" screen--are you using with Fonts4OS5, for instance?

pruss
12-06-2006, 07:18 AM
Could this be due to the fact that "Web" is near the end of the list. Does this happen with the next alphabetical app, too?

PinCushionQueen
12-06-2006, 07:55 AM
Ok... this is strange. I first went to try the alphabetical theory, and changed a setting for the next app in the list (a SlovoEd dictionary) - and low and behold got a crash.

Then I went to try changing the other settings for Blazer (Web) and no crash at all. Now I can't get it to crash even by changing the font. Yesterday and the day before it would crash consistantly when I changed the font for Blazer, now Blazer seems fine.

Wait, I just had a thought... Bummer! It appears that the problem does not lie with FontSmoother and Blazer per se - but it looks like something is getting "flushed out" with OffFlush.

To sum it up, immediately after a reset (FontSmoother is in my unCache list) everything appears to work just fine. However, once I flush my DBCache with OffFlush (I know, I know but I like it ;-) ) that's when the resets with Blazer and FontSmoother occur. I can consistantly recreate to crash now.

Also, it appears that if I go in a tweak a different setting (ie: Smart List or App Active) first, then change the font I don't get a crash.

I'm using the "FontSmoother Manages" mode - I don't have any other font programs installed.

I have it enabled for most apps, except for those where the fonts make weird things like the bundled Solitaire. No problems in Blazer here.

I would like to know if anyone converted PC fonts and which are the ones which look better on the Palm. Also, is the PC font size the same which we are using on our Palms? I mean, an Arial 18 will be an Arial 18 on my TX?

Thanks for any idea. :)

SYSTEM : Sony Clie NX80
Version : 2.0 beta
Installed w/ no problem but had a freeze on the initial set up and had to soft reset
reentered FS and went through several settings w/out problems
moved app to FLASH (via JackFlash) and confirmed works flawlessly thus far

Could this be incompatable w/ ZLauncher as no font change w/in ZL tabs, menus etc.

Looks GREAT in Agendus and thinking that this will eliminate need for F4OS5???

If you like sans serif fonts, you might want to look at Free Sans. I've settled on that, after trying both Arial and Verdana. I didn't like either on my TX under FontSmoother. Of course, this is all very much a matter of personal taste.

It froze after install and then opening the program and picking a packaged font . I was first in novice mode and after choosing the fone hit the "ON" button and that is where it froze. I waited a couple of min in case it was searching the 2G MS for addl fonts and then noticed that there was no MS access happening. Tried to hit "HOME" and nothing. Had to soft reset.
I went back in and had no problems at all and have not since.
Also figured out the ZLauncher issue as it was set to OFF by default.

No real issues this far I did notice that when using the F4OS5 font - Free Sans 16 AA that in Isilo when using the medium font the baseline is not straight the letters seem to float up or down a pixel or two either above or below it. Makes the line of text look wavy. When I up to the "larger" font in prefs its fine. Did not have this problem w/ any of the packaged fonts so am assuming that this is a font based issue?

Installed several fonts and no problels there
Second install was after a restored a backup from before I upgraded and then I uninstalled w/ "uninstall" FS and all prefs and fonts in ram
reset and then installed NEW fresh to try to recreate the original freeze and everything was smooth reset all prefs and no problems at all. Have installed FS fonts for Fonthack and FS fonts for FontSubst and will try them all out

My installation is one I converted with EasyConvert, and it has this wavy baseline in a few places too, so I'd guess this has something to do with the font. It's modestly annoying, but not enough for me to change. Of all the sans serif fonts I've tried, this is the most readable one on the TX. I don't like it in word processor documents, though, so like most fonts, its use depends on the application.

On an NX, there is little to fear. On an NVFS-based device, bad software could brick the device. (This could happen on a non-NVFS-based device mainly if the code to overwrite flash were activated.)

Thanks WildCelt and FerdFerd for the fonts!! Wild Celt - yours is my new favorite!! Looks great! and FerdFerd the Arial 11pt that you sent me is the one I'll be using for the apps that look better with a bit smaller font. Thanks bunches to you!!!

Now if someone could just point me in the direction of a font that looks as good as all of the others and yet has about the same proportion as the "System" font. I assume that would take care of the little black specks that show up when inputting text. Eventually all of the little bits go away but it bugs me some if I'm chatting or typing a larger amount of text and I set the font for those apps to the system. But now the "system" font looks UGLY!! :-)

The specks may be due to kerning. FontSmoother makes letters overlap as they should (e.g., 'To'). Palm software is, of course, not designed for that. Moreover, standard fonts have character widths that are multiples of 2 pixels for compatibility with lo-res displays. FontSmoother fonts can have odd width (or more precisely, odd horizontal advance) characters (otherwise character spacing for converted fonts looks inconsistent) and does wild and crazy things to make software designed for even-width characters work with odd-width characters. (Developers can avoid the problem by using native coordinates in place of standard ones. But I have a feeling that very few do. The only app I know to do that for sure is Plucker.)

For a font that matches the system font, Trebuchet is pretty close, I'm told.

Excellent work pruss, glad it's stand-alone now. No problems except with Bible With You (v6). Chapter headings are displayed properly, but the verses look plain.

Which font do the verses show up in? The system font, a non-smooth version of the selected font, or some other, custom font?

The program offers 3 font sizes to select from: small, medium, large. Seems to be system fonts from looks and the fact that it doesn't change when FS is toggled off and on.

I'm using "Gill 18 aa" (antialiased) font and the Chapter/Book headings look just as nice as the text. I have "medium" selected internally in BWY. On the Treo 700p screen, this font is awesome!

DoctorBri, glad to see another BWY user in these discussions (or any discussion for that matter). Great Bible app for the Palm! ;)

Now if someone could just point me in the direction of a font that looks as good as all of the others and yet has about the same proportion as the "System" font.

I am a big fan of the TungstenT 22 font that came with Fonts4OS5 as a standard system font replacement. It works well with every app on my Clie. FS displays this font very well.

Ok I found, downloaded and installed the font that you speak of, however, I can't get it to show up on my FS list of fonts to choose from
 How do I get it to show up so that I can use it?

Thanks :D

No problems except with Bible With You (v6).

Alright, so it's not FS. BWY (versions 6 or 7) won't work at all, now. Even after a hard-reset, it refuses to load .pdb's. I recently 'upgraded' to the TX from my Z1 (can't take the Zodiac with you on rounds!) so maybe I just need to work out the NVFS kinks/garbage, or learn to live with them. Anyways, great work, looking forward to the update. Any other problems, I'll let you know. :p

Do you have TungstenT 22 in RAM? I just enabled FS and it shows up on the drop down list of fonts.

Man... I totally spaced. I originally posted this in the wrong thread. Must've had too many tabs open in the browser....

Sorry I haven't yet weighed in until now. I had some problems with resets at first use. The resets occured while in Fontsmoother attempting to make changes. Resets would occur when trying to change a font or disable its use. At first I thought I might have had a corrupt font file and attempted to delete the font, which would itself immediately reset the TX. I deleted what I thought was the offending font and continued to get a couple of resets when trying to switch fonts. However, since these resets on the first day I used the program, its been fine since. I've tried to reproduce the problem that may have triggered the resets, but have been unable.

Since then I have been playing around with various fonts and sizes. I had expected a some slowdown in performance with fontsmoother enabled but have been pleasantly surprised instead. In snappermail, my impression is that scrolling through long messages has even been speeded up! Very nice.

Earlier versions of the beta had some trouble with font changes for apps on the last screen of the app list. Is that what you were doing?

Email me for a new beta. It looks like release will have to wait for Tuesday.

As the new version will be a standalone, do we delete the old version first?
I use Fonts4OS5 in addition to FontSmoother. Will that be necessary w/v2.0?

Yeah... I installed it just like I did all of my other fonts. Could you, would you email me a copy of the font prc that you've gotten to work?

Oh and PalmSole - I missed your post about a font - would you email your font too?

It should delete it by itself.

Fonts4OS5 hasn't been necessary since 1.60, but it does let you mix and match fonts more effectively.

Certainly playing around with too many apps does! I periodically hard reset and reinstall to remove any last vestiges of poorly behaved experiments. Then I'm OK until I start playing around with new apps again. Unfortunately, I can't resist trying out new apps for very long. Oh well, I guess there are worse vices to have.

Hello,

I am new to Fontsmoother and installed v1.7.9 on my TX. It's great!! It runs without any problem, and everything looks so much better. :)

Now I have a question! Should I buy v1.79 or wait for 2.00? What will be the benefits of 2.00 compared with 1.79?

The main thing with v2 is it is a stand alone app and no longer requires YAHM.

There are also some bug fixes. And maybe new bugs, but I hope to have them ironed out before a release this week. (I have an advertising campaign scheduled starting Friday, so that's my deadline.) But there is no reason to wait to register. (It may actually be the case that the price will eventually go up. I am inclined to sell at $13.95, with a $1 discount for the first two weeks.)
