View Full Version : App Request: Silence is Golden ...

We've discussed this, but it seems, IIRC, that nobody ever found a solution. I'd like an app that would completely silence my TX, preferably a DA, but to paraphrase a song, any app would do. Right now I tap the clock icon in my statusbar and chose the silent option, then I go to skinui, and set the sound option to default. This silences most apps, but some apps still seem to make noise, bejeweled for one and another app called dice121 that emulates the game yahtzee.

Any chance of an app to silence everything? If that's not possible, or too difficult how about something to combine the two steps I already have to take (although that sounds more complicated to me)? (I haven't figured out how to do this with a mykbd macro - but that could be because I'm not very good with those)

There is an open-source DA from Pruss which just patches all Sound-playing API calls. This should work.

Yes, Alex's app (which I think is a hack to be managed with YAHM) does the trick nicely.

I use VolumeDA and just open it w/ MetaDA - you can adjust the sound types individually or turn all off by a ''Main Switch''.

I believe I tried VolumeDA and Alex's app before, but they did not stop the sounds from bejeweled, I wiil try again - Thanks!

Okay I tried VolumeDA and SoundDA. Neither stopped skinui sounds. Alex Pruss' Silence Hack did stop sound on almost everything, including bejeweled, but not dice121. Unfortunately it is managed by yahm, which is not as easy to turn on and off as a DA. If your reading this Alex, is it possible to make a DA that does what Silence Hack does?

Sorry... Tangent --> Where did you get SkinUI sounds? I use v2.0 and have never seen any sound files available...

- launch YAHM/enable Silence Hack/return to current app

- launch YAHM/disable Silence Hack/return to current app

OR

- in dice121, access menu and kill sound in it's preferences

Did you try CoolDAs ? Ok for OS5. Excellent DA !
SAVLGDA ? Not sure for OS5.

I didn't see your response till now. Killing the sound in dice121 is great! I was just thinking how I could write a macro in mykbd to enable say the b profile which has silence hack enabled and one that enabled the A profile which has SH disabled, or just turn silence hack on and off - not sure which is easier - It looks like I'll have to use Bird to figure out the button ID ...

Thanks

Tom

SkinUI has had soundpacks since version 2.0... funny, I thought a default packcame with the download?

Anyway, it looks like Dmitry has not yet released the app that lets you make your own packs. Soon, maybe? ;)

TomWith myKbd you don't need the button's ID, you just need the label. Let me know where I can download Dice121 and I will look into writing a macro to enable/disable sound.

The only soundpacks I have I got when beta testing 2.0. I have the default one and the one Dmitry wrote to emulate windows sounds. If skinui is set to the default soundpack then it responds to sound silencing, but if I set it to the xp soundpack (which is how I normally have it set) the only way I've found to silence it is to use Alex's sound hack.

I'd love to see some more development of soundpacks and skins for SkinUI 2.0!

AHA! No wonder it didn't work. I tried again and instead of putting <run YAHM><tap 9017>, I did <run YAHM><tap A> and it went to the a profile and I used another macro button to go to the B profile! Thanks for the heads up! I guess I'm so used to setting things up in 2PlayMe where I need the ID, that I just assumed that when mykbd asked for the label it meant the ID.

Ah... that explains why I have no sound packs... I never beta tested skinUI. But heck yeah!! I'd love to see some sound packs developed. You guys who have Dmitry's ear should get him to do it...

Although Dmitry says it isn't that good (I would have to disagree), I'm sure he'd be willing to put up the sound pack he made - it may even be availalbe in the sound pack development example he made so others could make sound packs.

It turns out that even Sound Hack doesn't silence everything. I can live with turning the sound off in the dice121 game, but my alerts still sound. I can see in sound hack that Alex is trapping 4 different calls (at least that is what it looks like). Maybe there is another more basic system call that the alerts use??????

I thought I should revitalize this thread in the hopes that someone might have an answer to completely silencing the TX.

To more specific about what sounds are making it through despite silence hack and turning the sound off, although ptunes is silenced, so that my alarms via 2playme don't sound, the safe alarm in 2playme does sound.

Dmitry's hardware audio hack should TOTALLY silence your TX, as you can drop the hardware volume to 0. When that's done, it doesn't really matter how loud the sound is set in software ;)

I thought about this when I was posting. The only down side that I can see to this is that PowerVolume still causes a reset loop on my TX. (actually I tried version 3 once and when it caused a loop I eventually got out of it by doing a warm reset and restoring a previous backup set - NVB) So although this sounds like an almost perfect solution, until the time comes when I can use it PV won't do me any good.

Alex should also patch the Simple Sound API (Midi and simple tone playing).

Try the following program to turn off all system sounds: http://mytreo.net/downloads/details-833.html?ReConfig
(It also allows you to change the auto-off time)
I know it works on a Treo650 - not sure about the TX...

Ha, funny to see this old thread talking about Dice121,
that's one of mine.

Perhaps I should've had more respect for the Game Volume preference way back in 1999 :-)

I have yahdice, but found it was causing a conflict on my TX with someo other app (not sure which), so a while back I moved it to the card and haven't used it since. I just finished rebuilding my TX (software wise) so I may try it again. Currently my device is very stable.
