View Full Version : Oh my little buddy, th55

Last weeks it has felt that my th55 battery isn't anymore so well condition as it used to be. I don't how big is the difference but I notice quite easily that it can't handle so long stay-on times as it did. :( I just kept quite clear that my th55 battery will last always like it did when I did buy it.

But now my th55's situation is different because it is about 2,5 years old. I was thinking about for new battery which would be 1200size but there isn't sense when my th55 last still quite much over 5 hours. But what you do when you have used to get over 10 hours of use. Th55 battery is just over amazing.

Well, maybe I'm kinda "sad" for nothing but still it feel likes sad to see how quickly it will fall from 100% to 98% even I have charged it different times just too see is there difference. Oh, well all nice gadgets must die in the very end. And maybe then when th55's battery is very very bad condition there is better handheld avaivable. :o

Think of your TH as transitioning into the range of battery life of a new TX :D

Thats what I notice too, poor lil guy >.< Before I can surf the web for hours and barely see the battery drop, but now I can see the wifi drain the battery pretty quick. Though its still pretty good for everything else *besides movies >.<*

I like that. Funny, but there's a serious/clever suggestion lurking in there.

If you (LupeValenz) do decide to change the battery then you might consider getting an original Sony replacement. DanT has done a lot of testing on batteries and my impression from reading the various reports here is that, even though a Sony replacement is only rated the same as the original, i.e. 1000mAh, that it actually outperforms most, if not all, of the 1200mAh and even 1300mAh replacements. One theory is that Sony just has better storage procedures for their batteries.

On a lighter note, perhaps we should be wary of Sony lipolymer cells. It seems that every laptop reseller in the business (except Sony themselves, of course) has a 'voluntary' free exchange program in operation... ;)

Very good to know this one!

Bought a TH55U from DanT recently and the battery itself will stay at 100% for around 2 hours of use, dipping only slightly and then bouncing back up with a bit of web surfing, etc. BatteryGraph had reported around 4 hours and 15 minutes with the battery being at 73% before charging recently. My screen backlight is not off, but it is pretty low. So is this pretty respectable? It seems great compared to my TX battery, but then again the TX battery is refreshing much more ram, a faster processor to power and the minimum backlight setting is higher than the level my TH55's backlight is set at.

I'm interested to know about TX battery performance. Has anyone who owns TX tried to run BatteryTIME 1.84? If yes, what is your discharge time?

It's really difficult to compare because it depends so much on exact usage patterns, exactly where your backlight slider is set, and whether the battery was brand new when DanT supplied the TH-55.

For my usage, when I first bought my system with a brand new factory-fit battery I could get over 4 hours use before the battery ever moved from 100% but that was with the backlight slider below the "A" in "Adjust" and with my entire workload being just reading an ebook in eReader so pretty much the lowest power-drain type of work I could choose. Depending where your backlight is set and just how much WiFi you are doing in those first 2 hours (plus do you WiFi in normal or power save mode?) then staying 2 hours at 100% could be pretty consistent with my incredibly low-power workload keeping me at 100% for 4 hours.

The best way to determine how your battery is performing relative to expectations would be to run BatteryTIME on it.

BatteryTime gives a time of circa 4h 15m for maximum brightness. Right, my workload tends to be more complex than e-book reading. The 2 hour benchmark that I have observed is with a full backup performed via Resco Backup each nite (usually occur in the time), running intensive apps such as Warfare Inc, ZLauncher, numerous hacks which unfortunately do slow down the system, considerable MS access while installing new files, launching apps, etc. Usually there is a bit of wifi (updating weather, syncing avantgo, etc). While BatteryTime maxes the brightness, does it also run the processor at full speed for the time, ie running it in some sort of computational loop? I am not questioning whether the battery in my TH55 is any good, just more or less wondering how it compared to new ones? It is very good in my opionion, so far, with my settings, much longer lasting that my TX (with major differences in hardware granted, as mentioned above).

@DanT,

In regards to the TX battery life, I can easily get the 4h 15m mark by the time that I am 10% (although I never run it that low). Some of my personal observation marks are:
- 100% after 1 hour
- 93% after 1 hour 30 minutes
- 80% after 2 hours
- 65% after 3 hours 30 minutes

Maybe as I have a few free days over Christmas break I will try to run BatteryTime (assuming it works on the TX).

Thanks for the info. To have an apple-to-apple comparison, you need to compare them using a standard battery discharge test, in this case BatteryTIME 1.84 at full brightness with full span discharge mode from 100% down to 10%, as we have tons of data from TH55s, e.g., this thread (http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42896)

With the BatteryTIME 1.84 you can just charge your battery to full and set the brightness to maximum, then test it by pressing the discharge test button on BatteryTIME 1.84. Let it do its job for whatever long it takes until it turns off by itself when it reaches 10%. I usually do it at night before going to bed. By morning I get the data, which will be automatically dump into MemoPad.

Rule of Thumb in Palm world, always start with PalmGear.com and search for Battery TIME 1.84, like this one below:

Hi, this is my first post on these forums (though I've been reading them for a bit longer and have owned my TH since the day after they came out in the US).

I have also been trying to test my battery life with Battery Time v1.84, and was looking for a bit more information about the app.

Is it supposed to drain to 10% then shut off (as it seems from whats been said), or does it actually only drain to 66% (what I found mine at when I turned it on this morning). I suppose that if its supposed to go to 10% my test results (4 hours) might have been flawed because of battery springing (don't know a better term for when the battery drains to a certain percentage then springs back up). If this is a case does anyone know how to fix this, Its been a while since i did a complete battery drain then hard reset, and I'm not even sure if that does anything.

Thanks, and I hope to post her more often.

It is supposed to drain to 10% and quit. I suppose you need to disable any alarms during the test. The best time is right before going to bed. Then you will see the result like this, below when you go to your MemoPad under the Unfiled category (this is an example of my original battery after 2 years of daily use):
