Which are the new or upcoming clamshell handhelds?

I want a replacement for my UX, but it needs to meet certain requirements. Maybe some of you can help me out.

My next handheld needs to have:

- clamshell design (this is basically THE most important thing)
- faster processor (2nd most important thing)
- Palm OS (but I guess I can settle for Windows for Palm)

These next options are not imperative, but I would sure like it:

- phone
- wifi
- small, like the UX
- bigger internal memory (at least 1GB)
- camera
- video recorder

And BTW, i know the Universals are out, but I heard there are some phone compatibility issues, since the Universals were made to best work in Europe.

And they don't run Palm OS either...

The Universal is what will eventually replace my UX. They've had 3-4 firmware updates and from some of their forums are pretty stable now. The HTC Universal seems to be the most converged device out there, I'm just waiting for the price to drop, .

Before investing, there are rumors of Universal II coming soon. :)

I've heard that rumor as well but I'm a late adopter so I don't mind

I actually went on that route of replacing my ux with the HTC universal. But as with most of these convergent devices it is more on one thing than the other. The THC universal was more of a PDA than phone. The reception and receiver volume was poor and its PDA functionality very slow to respond. Additionally there many system stalls/crashes/freezes etc. And adding insult injury was the lack of tactile keypad for the phone. The size is also a major issue as well. The thing is huge. If I were going to replace my UX w/ something new I would look else where. But thats just me, oh btw after much frustrating usage I sold the Universal after only a month of usage.

Curious, did any of the firmware updates help. I heard there was at least 3 so far. I guess i'm looking at it as the most converged device out right now; but as long as the UX still runs I'm happy.

Yeah it does look big, that is why I want something small, something that fits easily into my pocket. Man, it has been ... I don't know how many years since the UX came out and I have YET to find something that truly replaces it. All hail the UX!

I enjoy my UX and really nothing could replace it, unless it had a keyboard. I grabbed the HTC MDA back in May 2006 and haven't looked back.

Why?
1. UX battery display is whacky. Don't know where it's at always up and down. I probably need a new battery anyways as I purchased it the day it was released in the U.S. a few years back.

2. All in one. I didn't think I would care for an all-in-one device, but I really do. Also, my UX doesn't support WPA, nor 802.11g.

Still, it's a great PDA and the back-up battery helps.

I loved the UX but the hinge was a big issue in that if it bent, that was it for your cool-looking UX. So I've compromised with the HTC sliders that are out now. I am going to actually get a PPC-6700 due to its large keyboard and screen. While the UX screen is bigger than it, the HTC has a better battery life and has a phone. I've gone from a swivel phone like the Sidekick to a clamshell PDA like the UX and hopefully to a slider phone like the PPC-6700 next.

Well I just LOVE the UX, so far nothing (IMO) can compare to it, due to all the features that it offers, plus all the features that the UX offers benefit me.

Features that I really like about the UX that no other palm has (well as far as I know):

Voice Recorder= I tape lectures with it (this is a GREAT recorder! I compared it to a person who sits next to me, she uses a SONY voice recorder, and the UX VR plays the sound sooo much better; MUCH CLEARER. And you can also transfer the data to your PC, and it will be recognized as a WMA, so you can play it with Windows Media Player, Winamp, etc. You can also burn the data to a CD and play it on a standard CD player! I had to do this for a project, came in VERY handy).

Camera for Pics= I know the resolution isn't all that great, but nonetheless it takes decent pics. And you can add effects.

Video Recorder= I really like the fact that it can record VIDEO! other PDA's can take pics but not vids. And you can add effects. Can also transfer the data and watch it on your PC.

Clamshell design
Swivel Screen
Integrated Keyboard

And keep in mind that the UX has ALL of these features. Some PDA's may have some but not all.

With all the apps that I have, my UX definitely works and acts like a mini laptop. I have a windows-like launcher, AeroPlayer, an awesome calendar that lets me put icons for each event, a money management program, Docs to go, Oxford Dictionary and Thesaurus, SlovoEd (a multi-language dictionary, so far I have Eng-Span, Eng-Portuguese, Eng-Italian, Eng-Latin).

And I just like the fact that I can transfer data EASILY between my PC and UX. I have mp3's, full length movies, and South Park episodes all in my UX!

What can I say, I really like the UX! If only the battery life was better (keep in mind that I bought my UX used, so I assume that a newer UX would have a better battery life). I am seriously contemplating about purchasing a UX-50, mainly for checking my email on the go (I have a UX-40). But I don't know if a better PDA will soon come out that will TRULY replace the UX. I will wait like 3 more months. If I see nothing, then I will probably go ahead and purchase a UX-50.

Joebob, i do have an UX50 and trust me I AM THE HAPPIEST MAN ON THIS CRAZY PLANET....
Only if the battery was better!!! Since i fund this blog/website i do understand more my UX50 and i can enjoy more. I found out how to make my wifi work "open the casse and put some tape over the chip etc" and i love surfing on ux50 "for 15min".. lol
I still cant sync with wifi or bluetooth but thats not a big deal... who knows mabey one of these days i can get that work too... lol

to my knowledge there is no other pda with all features that ux50 offers. and like you said the voice recorder and sensitivity of the microphone is soooooooooo great that can even record your heart beat. since i run ZLauncher on it i cant stop changing background pics....hahaaa "I am a photographer and use my own pics"

I use a memory stick duo 2GB and have some mp3, video and pics beside tons of software and apps that i run directly from MS.

I always loved and trusted Palm OS as i do MAC... I wish Palm had a OS to replace this damne broken windows... anyway....

treat yourself with an UX50 and enjoy it...
good night

AWESOME gadgetguru! Yea I loved the UX the first day I saw one, back when I was in H.S., couldn't afford it then, but now I am actually considering about buying ANOTHER one!

Just one more thing though, if you (or ANYONE else) can do me this favor. Since my main reason for purchasing a UX-50 is for it's wifi capabilities, can you go to inbox.com and check if it loads properly? I did another post entitled " Can somebody do me a favor?" if you want some more info. Also, does Gmail and it's integrated "chatting" abilities work?

Why is it that Netfront loads webpages slowly (as I have read)? Do the HTC wizards, universals, or any other wifi PDA has the same problems? Is the problem with Netfront itself? Is there another browser that surpasses Netfront, allowing webpages to display properly and fast? As I have mentioned, I have a UX-40, so I don't know anything about surfing with the UX-50. Any input would be GREATLY appreciated.

Voice recorder can also be used as an eavesdropping tool! As well as recording and typing memos at the same time, it multitasks?

and discreet pics, flat on a table the waitress bends over you get the picture.

same as above with video

On sheer functionality the UX can perform against any PDA made today.

well, i am not the right person to help you with this matter. i still can not use my email program on UX50, because i only have web based emails like yahoo.

hopefully someone else will show you the way and i can learn something too.
good luck..

You could have more screen space or a better keyboard with the bigger footprint of a clamshell design. Overall, I'd definitely be looking for a bigger battery and hopefully more I/O capabilities ( a real USB, 2+ memory slots)

And some people think the Palm has reached a limit...
