I have had to hard reset twice in recent times and now want to get backup software. I have researched the site and Resco Backup and BackupMan seems to be the most recommended. Could someone tell me which is now esteemed the best?

I'm very pleased with Resco since it can be schedulqd. But if you don't need that, why not use the free MSbackup that comes with the TH? It does a great job!

I use both and prefer Resco backup. Some issues to compare the two:

1) Resco backup compresses the files so the backup image is substantially smaller than Backupman. A typical 20MB RAM would be 20MB file in Backupman, Rescobackup would save take up 11-15MB files (depending on the compressability of the files)

2) Resco backup compresses the files as individual files (unless they are small files), so you can decompress them using any winzip compatible program (such as Resco Explorer).
Backupman saves the entire image as a single file which cannot be accessed by any other program than Backupman.

3) Resco and Backupman can be scheduled to any day, any time and any event trigger (eg. after hotsync)

4) Resco Backup seems faster at backing up the RAM than Backupman.

In the end, it's a case of what works for you! I suggest doing a backup using RescoBackup and Backupman and hitting your device with a hard reset and restore using these programs.
On my T3, it works fine and use both as a redundant backup system (ie. in case Backupman or Resco Backup cannot restore from a hard reset) - a bit of paranioa on my part since the occasions in which I've had to initiate a hard reset, the restore using Resco always worked without any hitches.

Hope this helps...

I recently obtained Resco Backup after having used BackupMan for years (still use both of them as safety measure ;) ).
I am also inclined to think that Resco is doing a better job by e.g. providing compression and separate file backup though the screen estate on Backupman is a lot more intuitive for a newbie.

As indicated, what works for you is what you should choose.
Both offer extensive trial periods so try before you buy.

Yes, MSBackup is great! However, I use Resco Backup for the scheduling, and compression features.

Using the native Clie backup programs is fine. It's just they don't have the following features:
1) Incremental backup (copies only the changed files)
2) Copies all the files from RAM to MS. Crude but effective but doesn't free up space on your MS to do more... :)

MSBackup

does not backup Powerrun files,
unneccesarily backups the a68k files
can not be scheduled
can not restore a backup that was made on a different hardware device

Backupman

can encrypt the backup
backups into a single file which saves space on the card (each file uses at least one cluster)

I own and have used all THREE of the major Palm backup applications: BackupMan, BackupBuddy, and Resco Backup. My choice is Resco Backup. All three do a good job of creating backup files. The difference comes when you must do a restore. Resco wins smooth, fast, no errors restorals hands down! ;)

Looks as though I will get Resco Backup. Could you briefly tell me how you do a restore. Is the application on the MS? I could try it to see how it works but at the moment I am scared that I will set my TH into a spin/lock mode again. It has taken me a day's work to get it back to normal.

It should be noted that in a previous discussion on backup software, it was found that the restore device feature in backupman 2.x did the best job of restoring on another device. I own backupman and Resco backup and use NVBackup as well. All three currently are making backup sets on my card. (I'm very paranoid) Resco Backup has had the most development recently and the programmers are the most responsive.

Chou Chou, Resco places a copy of Backup to the MS so you can still restore after a hard reset.

3) For owners of two TH55s, the native Clie backup can't be used to fill the second TH55 from the first (the native Clie backup stores the serial number of the TH55, I think, to check that you're restoring to the right PDA.

Also, I don't think the native Clie backup does scheduled backups (I'm doing a BatteryTime test right now, so can't check).

If one is not interested in scheduled backup, you get more from buying Resco Explorer, which has backup/restore. That's what I use.

Resco stuff is all designed so cleanly. I bought Resco Viewer because it's so clean, can put pics in any directory, from any source (e.g., right from Memory Stick). SplashPhoto is so much more intrusive, taking over ownership of your photos. Because of their clean designs, I would go Resco.

Chou Chou,

What LanMan said! (in answer to your question to me) :)

What's neat is that whenever you overwrite your existing version of Resco Backup with a newer version, it reminds you and offers to update/overwrite the copy on your memory card as well.

BackupMan may very well have corrected the issue that drove me to Resco Backup by now. Haven't tried it in well over a year. But when I did use it, I would have to manual reload ClieSkinner after every restore, which included another device reset . . . pain in the %#@@.

Let me just say that any of my three backup apps, or the other couple mentioned are much, much better than no backup strategy at all!

I have downloaded the Resco Backup and done a backup. However, I still do not see how I do a restore after a hard reset because Resco is no longer on the handheld.

Please could you tell me how to initiate Resco from the MS before I install my font software again (which I fear was the problem that I had to do a hard reset each time). It is unclear in the Resco instructions.

After you complete the hard reset, you will be looking at Clie Organizer. Select the "Applications" tab. Use the upper right dropdown list and select "MS." There you will see Resco Backup. Tap it! Click "OK" on the warning screen.

Tap "Restore" button. If you have multiple backup sets, highlight the one you want to restore. Tap "Next" and you're on your way. :)
