What would make a NX80 slow down. This has been happening slowly over the last year or so. Plenty of free RAM. No other symptoms, just very slow with all apps.

Hi Dennis

I would suggest hard reset and re-install your applications. I took the plunge on the weekend with my NX80 which is over two years old now. It does run better now, however the main reason I did it was whenever I did a soft reset, it would go into a hard reset loop. The only way out was to disconnect the battery for a few minutes and then restore from backup. I must have had some corrupt apps installed. Once I re-installed my apps, I had an extra 2 - 3MB RAM. I know some of this would be from not installing some apps I no longer used, but I can't help feeling that there was a lot of "junk" hanging around in RAM from old apps that had not been deleted completely.

You may have a point. This NX80 has run so flawessly it hasn't needed a hard reset for over three years. I've tried soft resets ........... does nothing for the speed. Man, I hate the thought of re-installing everything. I have so much on the stick. All the preferences would have to be re-done. One thing though is you did it for a different reason than what I need. Is there a way of testing the CPU to see if its clock speed has changed?

You can always try overclocking the unit, although this will affect the battery life negatively. http://palmpowerups.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=12

I did have an overclocking application on my NX80 never re-installed it because I never used it. These overclocking apps will show you current clock speed as well as one called "Speedy" if you're curious.

And, possibly, are you just noticing your NX80 getting old? Maybe it just seems slow compared to the new technology around you.

my NX-80 works as fast (maybe faster) than the day I bought it.
If you want to speed it up w/out having the nightmare of reinstalling here are a couple of tips
1. Use a backup program and make a complete back up to your memory stick or CF card
2. back up your memory stick/CF card to your hard drive and then reformat it
3. do a hard reset and then restore.
I use resco backup and it is flawless.
this is how I run my 80 with no problems
I Use jackflash and actually move some programs into the flash memory. They remain even after hard reset.
I move MOST apps to the card and run them from there. Z-Launcher makes this work perfectly
I run a backup (automatically) every day and overright the old
Rescu backup puts rescue restore on the card. I simply drag and drop everything on the card to a folder on ny PC
then reformat my MS (through disk mamager in windows)
drag everything back to the stick and then do a hard reset of the 80
insert my memory stick and navigate to the resco backup that is on the card and run it and do a restore
reset the 80 (soft) and then open up jackflash and hit the update button and viola everything back to the way it was and no "junk"
many times your saved and unsaved pref files will get bogged down w/ unused or unwanted prefs and this will help as well as running a pref cleaner (which I dont do)

Hope this helps and is SOOOOO EASY

Talk about feeling dumb. Forgot about backing up to the MS. Although, the 80 has run so well over the years I have become lacks at doing backups.

Yes, it really is running slower. I can tell when playing Breakout. The action is so slow with the stylist that it is unplayable now.

If the issue is with something on the unit (corrupt file??), however, won't backing up and restoring bring the same issue back to the unit?

I would echo most of the comments from rdiheath, hard reset and load up your apps a few at a time, test, and repeat until you have everything loaded back on the NX. I just went through this about three months ago and have noticed a positive performace increase. Over the years, I have tested dozens of apps. Each one likely left some 'crap' (can I use this type of course language here?) on the system. The har reset and reinstall cleaned much of the garbage up. Much like a Windows system, after a few years, a wiping of the hard drive and a complete reinstall often presents you with quite the zippy system.

Definitely consider adopting a backup system. Use the built-in MS backup on a regular basis or purchase a third-party app like BackupBuddy to automate bakcups of your RAM and external card. Having a decent backup is immensely comforting when you experience a fatal crash.
