View Full Version : Man, if Sony's new Clie's Have < 64 MB and Nothing New

I think they are going to have one nightmare of a product cycle with newer Clies. Although ugly, the new Palms are going to be some real competition.

I'd just be glad if new Clies have 32 Meg. I love the large screen and virtual graffiti too much...and not fond of those little keyboards! Built-in WiFi would be sweet though....

coming back with just 32 MB and Wifi doesn't cut it, particularly when the price will probably not be competitive. I would not be happy even if they throw Bluetooth in there either.
I am always optimistic about surprises.

Uninformed is right, 32 mb won't cut it palm has show that it can get the new processors, that it can do built in wifi and 64mb for under $500. Sony better be impressive if they don't want a bad sales cycle. I'm sure in the long run they will smack Palm down with some nice blinky lights in the future but if the soon to be relased clie's don't go well and beyond what has been hinted at I think Sonys going to loose alot of new sales and people who would have upgraded.

Sony has continued to make better and more inovative products than nearly any other PDA maker out there. To date there is not one Palm PDA that comes close to a Sony Clie. Heck Palms are just now starting to add camera's and MP3 players, this has been on Sony devices for nearly 2 years!! All of a sudden there is a Palm rumor that they will be coming out with a 32mb device and everyone thinks Sony is just going to give up!!! Judging Sony's past and current trend in the PDA business I bet Sony will come out with a clie that will blow everyone away, just like they have continued to do with their NR/NX/and NZ line of clies. Show me any palm that can take a few hours worth of video with sound, take 2mega pixel photos, run memory stick and now compact flash cards simultaneously, play MP3's, remote control the TV, etc, and the list goes on. In my opinion Palm is trying to play major "catch up" in their own game!!! Sony is by far the most innovative maker of PDA's.

Don't get your hopes up. The next NX released soon WILL have 32mb of ram.
But what do I know?

so Massman82 just makes my point even stronger... Sony is planning on a 32mb device just like Palm.

The Tungsten C is a powerful device, but really no threat to most Clie owners since it lacks stereo sound and multimedia software.
The Zire 71 is more of a multimedia device and will probably sell well. However Real One player is pretty crappy and Kinoma is inferior to the Movie player software on the 0S 5 Clies so Palm still has work to do.

I'm ready to dump my NR70 and get the Tungsten C. The T|C is what the TG-50 should have been.
For an extra $100 bucks, I get almost 5 times the memory (TG-50 = 11MB usable, T|C = 51MB usable), WiFi, no Memory Sticks, no need for additional memory on a card, OS 5.2.1, and Graffiti 2. All I lose is Bluetooth (which I can buy as an add-on), a backlit keyboard, and the jog-dial (which I will miss).
I can live without HiRes+ and VG.
Sign me up.

I played with the Tungsten C a few minutes ago. I put Master Thief and Bejeweled on it. THEY FLEW! Then I checked info and the unit still had about 50 meg free. WOW. If this is a sign of things to come for PalmOS devices, I can't wait!

I tried living without HiRes+ and its tough. Living without stereo sound though? No way I could do that. I use the MP3 abilities of the Clie too much.

I just played with the Tungsten C at CompUSA today. It has a 400Mhz processor, 64MB internal RAM, internal WiFi (it has a "browse" button....I was web browsing in seconds), and a great screen. With PalmOS 5.2.1, it costs $499 (outpost.com).
Size? About the same size as my N760, which is perfect for my pocket (I compared them side by side in the store).
I've been waiting and waiting and waiting for Sony to come out with something like a 320x480 T series, or internal WiFi. Or more internal RAM. Instead they give us new PDA's that do nothing special for me, and even remove features I love (no music remote on the T50 and new S). Bluetooth is neat....but I have no bluetooth devices, and I use WiFi at home and many other places already.
I'm really considering jumping ship. Palm may have done something incredibly stupid with the multimedia capabilities of the C (trying to get info on the 2.5" audio jack on the C.....it may not be stereo). If so, then I guess I'm still in the Sony camp for a bit :-)
Any rumors of new Clie's to keep me happy?
Not trying to be negative here, just wondering what's up with Sony lately.

without a backlit keyboard, typing at night or in a dimly lit room is going to prove to be very frustrating

I don't think so. Once I find F and or J on a keyboard, I don't need to look anymore. Even on a crappy chicklet keyboard like TG-50 or T|C, after a day or two of getting used to it. The first thing I'd want to do on a TG-50 is find out how to disable keyboard lighting so I can save on battery life.
I hope Sony comes out with something damn soon, because that Tungsten C makes Sony look just silly. The only saving grace for Sony is that Palm was retarded enough to put a mono output on the headphone jack. Unbelievable. The TG-50 still looks really great to me, but the specs on T|C are soo much better. I am still very seriously looking at the TG-50, and may still get one, what a great form factor. I am hoping the rumors about the updated NX-60 coming out any day are true, because if it comes out soon enough, that is what I will get instead of tungsten C. Battery life and small size are critical for me though, hopefully the Sony update won't blow it on that one.
I really don't give a damn about crappy built in cameras, wish Palm and Sony would just give up on that gunk. I can see why people are hooked on the bigger 480X320 screens, but am willing to give up on that to get a smaller size, lower cost, and far more battery life.

I hope Sony will be the first to use NAND on a Palm OS, to have apps survive a hard reset. Toshiba started using this on the e755.

Well if you look at the PDA sale report for this quater, SONY has declined to 3rd position as compare to the previous 2nd in line. HP had snatched the title. And also, PALM is still the best selling PDA in the market with almost doubled the sale market as compare to HP.
http://asia.cnet.com/sg/0,39002190,39128647,00.htm
With the introduction of Zire 71 and T/C, seems like the PALM is trying to create a larger margin with his no. 2 competitor.

Regarding the BT SD card: You currently CANNOT use it with the T|C or Z-71 b/c PalmOS 5.2 does not yet support the drivers for these cards. :eek: But, it seems they're working on it for release in the future....

PalmSG used the mono headphone jack b/c for the purposes of VoIP functionality. Mono jacks use two channels: one for input and the other for output unlike stereo jacks. However, PalmSG should have included both a mic and stereo jack for this purpose like various PPC's...

Personally, I am waiting for a few things to come into place before upgrading to a new PDA (whether CLIE or Palm).
* OS5
* ARM processor of 300-400Mhz
* Hi-res (320x320 or 320x480)
* Virtual graffiti screen
* T/TG profile (ie not the flip and twist screens of the NX/NV series).
* 64M RAM (or higher)
* MS Pro or SD/MMC of 256Mb and higher.
Then I'd be happy (for the moment...) :)
Baker1369
04-24-2003, 02:19 AM
yorrick - the tungsten C fills that profile perfectly minus the 256 sd card (maybe?) everything else is perfect... it supports VG entry right on the screen enabled somewhere in the menus...
does anyone know if it is available at best buy yet?

Hey Massman, without betraying confidences, do you think the new Clies will blow us away, or be just a bit better than the current NX series?

hopefully the coming unit will be better. But according to the rumors so far, I'm quite happy with the speculated spec for the "nx replacement" unit.

but I loved the old innovation jumps Sony made in the CLIE. Adding a bit o' memory, built in Wifi and BT seems so yesterday at this point.
Not that I am complaining, mind you . . . it paves the way for something much better for Christmas

No new Clié before OS6 release in autumn. + I need Jog, HR+, Camera and remote (I've systematically replaced the remote in my household with my Clié.)
And the OS6 Clié needs more RAM as OS6 is a hell-of-a-lot closer to a desktop OS (Linux in particular) as it is to current PDA OSes. I think Palm will try to keep it as tiny as possible, but I would expect 32 MB for the OS alone!

Palm's "innovation" is great, IMO. Some good ol' healthy competition just means better products for all of us. However, I think predictions of Sony's demise are probably a bit premature. ;)

Yorrick I"m pretty sure the T|C can use a 256mb sd card too sounds like it already has everything you want and more.
Here's hoping sony doesn't wait to long to tell (leak) what they are really comming out with. Everyday is a struggle not to get that T|C

I always find it amazing how quick people are to jump on one bandwagon or another. I remember when some of these earlier Clies came out, everyone was saying how Palm would be overtaken by Sony. Didn't happen. I personally will wait to see what Sony comes out with before I dump them for the T|C. They've been a leader in Palm innovation for a number of years now, and I don't see that changing. Compared to other things in my life, I don't need a new PDA *that* bad!

Since one of the posters mentioned it, where the heck is OS 6 anyway? Expected more leaks by now. I understanding PPC 2003 is probably due end of May at this point and will offer little more than Xscale optimizations (not that PPC needs much more than speed at this point -- hae you guys seen Sorcery PDA? WOW)

Hi everybody
here I have some comments about Palm! I bought T/T in November, the sliding mechanism was very loose so I sent it in for repair or replacement. I rellay liked my T/T until I put my hands on a NX. Anyway, Palm Customer Service is the worse in the world!! They lost my device twice, nobody knew what to tell me about it, they even have an on-line status check for your repair that it's suppose to be a good thing unless your device keep beeing pending receipt position even after 10 phone calls I made to try to know what it was going on!! I got a replaicement in the end after almost 2 months!! Can you belive that?!?!? I sold my T/T on e-bay and bought a NX which I love but I'm almost ready to upgrade with something new from SONY. No more PALM, I don't trust them anymore and just think about this, every time Palm comes out with something new that seems great Sony blowes them away with their new ideas and devices. I don't like the TG-50 but I think when they go with the hi-end stuff there is just no camparison. I am sure they'll come out with something slick!! Do not buy PALM wait for Sony!!! Ciao

I can't speak for my the europeans, as Sony keeps them (usually) on a different timeline. But I hope to be in Spain and France at the end of the May with a new clie. That is the hope. Hope being that when it is announced, they will be available at the same time. Sony usually releases it's products in Japan before the US but it is a rarity for their palm unit.

I have until the third of may to return my tg50 for a TC (i like wifi a whole lot more and I turned out to not be a big fan of the flip on the TG) and best buy doesnt have it yet...anyone know when they are gonna get them in?
Good
So we are waiting till sometime in May then? OK. I can deal with that. :)
As you can see, I have been w/o a Palm/Sony for a while now (since April 14-15, I believe, and I have survived with my PowerBook so far - bulky, but oh well...)
I am glad I can resist the T/C - I swore I wouldn't go back to the 320x320 screen. VG is MUUUUCH better. And WHAT?? No jog dial?? Then the T/C is not for me for sure...
Waiting for the next NX...

I just realized now that in iSilo, the jog dials back button actually brought you back one page!! I don't think it did that before I upgraded my palm iSilo software. Now, I can't live without hires+ and the jog dial. What I'd like in my next device is wifi and bluetooth.. Compact flash as storage would be nice too... But if Sony can come up with an NR/NX form (screen wise), bluetooth, and wifi built in.. I'm all over that device.. When will something like this be released? Sigh.. doubt it'll be "soon" Sigh..

I'm pretty much satisfied with the Cliés I have owned (N760C, NR70, NR70V currently), so I'm sure I will stick with Sony. My first handheld was a Palm IIIe with the clear case, then a Palm V, and both were kind of unimpressive. Once I upgraded to my first Clié, the N760C, I did not even bother looking back. Then again, Palm has not done much to impress with their m505 USB fiasco, plus lack of multimedia features. Still, I hope the keep releasing improved and appealing products, since we always win when companies push their products to higher levels...
